Food allergy to Helix terrestre (snail).

Among the rare foods capable of producing food allergies is the snail (Helix terrestre). The snail is a delicacy eaten in Spain, France and Portugal. This study presents the findings of an allergic study of 10 patients with this infrequent food allergy during the past 10 years. The shock organ in the majority (80%) of these patients was the bronchial tree. Six of them did not have any digestive or skin symptoms which are usually seen in cases of food allergy. All patients manifested the symptomatology after ingestion of Helix terrestre. Two also had reactions after eating Patella vulgata (limp

Morphology of interneurons in the procerebrum of the snail Helix aspersa.

Terrestrial snails have a highly developed sense of olfaction. Because the procerebrum has a large number of cells and is located at the entry site of the olfactory nerve into the brain, the structure is thought to have a significant role in the processing of olfactory stimuli. The morphology of the procerebral neurons in the snail Helix aspersa was investigated through intracellular injections of biocytin. No formal categorization of neuronal types was possible, but some cells were seen to have neurites entirely intrinsic to the procerebrum, whereas others had both intrinsic and extrinsic arb

The Helix aspersa (brown garden snail) allergen repertoire.

BACKGROUND: Ingestion of snails can induce strong asthmatic or anaphylactic responses, mainly in house-dust-mite-sensitized patients. The aim of this study was to identify the Helix aspersa (Hel a), Theba pisana (The p) and Otala lactea (Ota l) allergens and the extent of their cross-reactivity with the Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Der p) mite. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In 60 atopic patients, skin prick tests (SPT) to snail and D. pteronyssinus, total and specific IgE, specific IgE immunoblots, RAST and immunoblot inhibition assays were performed. RESULTS: Mean total IgE was >1,000 kU/l. Mean

Metabolomic Prediction of Cadmium Nephrotoxicity in the Snail Helix aspersa maxima.

The decontamination of polluted soils is a major socioeconomic issue in many industrialized countries. In situ remediation approaches are nowadays preferred to ex situ techniques, but they require among others the use of bioindicators, which are sensitive to the progressive depollution on health effects. Animal species have been mainly used so far to monitor aquatic and air pollution. Current research focuses on the development of living indicators of soil pollution. In this study, the garden snail Helix aspersa maxima was acutely exposed to cadmium, one major soil contaminant causing severe h

Neuronal background of positioning of the posterior tentacles in the snail Helix pomatia.

The location of cerebral neurons innervating the three recently described flexor muscles involved in the orientation of the posterior tentacles was investigated by applying parallel retrograde Co- and Ni-lysine tracing via the olfactory and the peritentacular nerves. Their innervation patterns in the flexor muscles were studied by applying anterograde neurobiotin tracings via these nerves. The labeled neurons are clustered in eight groups in the cerebral ganglion. They send both common and distinct innervation pathways to the flexor and the tegumental muscles and to the tentacular retractor mu

Carbonic anhydrase and CO2 chemoreception in the pulmonate snail Helix aspersa.

We have studied the effects of carbonic anhydrase inhibition on the hypercapnic ventilatory response of the pulmonate snail, Helix aspersa, in an isolated brain-pneumostome preparation. We found that the cell permeant carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, acetazolamide (ACTZ), increased pneumostomal opening and ventilation during normocapnia (2-3% CO2) and decreased the rate of pneumostomal response to step changes in CO2 (4.5%), but did not change the steady-state ventilatory response to elevated CO2 (4.5%) compared to the inactive ACTZ analogue, N2-substituted 2-acetylamino-1,3,4-thiadiazole (Cl 138

Neurophysiological and behavioral responses to olfactory stimuli in the snail Helix pomatia L.

Some aspects of olfactory sensitivity in the pulmonate Helix pomatia L. were studied by means of neurophysiological and behavioral methods. Single fiber recordings were carried out in the olfactory nerve of the posterior tentacles. Olfactory stimulations with different odors were performed by means of a continuous air stream. The order of neuronal sensitivity to different odors was as follows: ethanol > or = ethyl acetate > pentanol > hexanol > octanol > or = diethyl malonate > vanillin. Furthermore, the results revealed a relative specificity for some substances. A comparison between neurophy

Responses of the rectum and oesophagus of the snail Helix aspersa to purine nucleotides and nucleosides.

1. Purine compounds were examined for pharmacological activity in the rectum and oesophagus of the garden snail Helix aspersa. 2. In the rectum, adenosine, AMP, ADP and ATP (above 10 microM) and acetylcholine (above 1 nM) consistently caused concentration-dependent contractions. The slope of the dose-response curve for ADP in the rectum was significantly steeper than for the other purine compounds. The contractile responses to the nucleotides and acetylcholine, but not adenosine, were selectively potentiated by physostigmine (1 microM). Atropine (1 microM) and tubocurarine (30 microM) failed t

Modulation of heart activity during withdrawal reflexes in the snail Helix aspersa.

The beating activity of the molluscan heart is myogenic, but it is influenced by nervous signals of central origin. Previous studies have demonstrated changes in cardiac output during feeding and other behaviors. Here, we describe a short latency, transient cardiac response that accompanies withdrawal reflexes. When evoked by electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves, the response was detected within one or two heartbeats. Beat amplitudes increased on average 11.6%, and inter-beat intervals decreased on average 2.1%. The mean duration of the response was 28.1 s. A transient inhibitory phase

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Studies of Irradiated Grape Snails (Helix pomatia) and Investigation of Biophysical Parameters.

A study of grape snails (Helix pomatia) using the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy method, where shells were exposed to ionizing gamma radiation, indicated that the effect of radiation up to certain doses results in the emergence of magnetic properties in the organism. The identification of the EPR spectra of the body and shell parts of the control and irradiated grape snails separately showed that more iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles are generated in the body part of the grape snail compared to the shells. A linear increase in free radical signals (g = 2.0023) in the body

Beneficial Effects of Snail Helix aspersa Extract in an Experimental Model of Alzheimer's Type Dementia.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a complex neurodegenerative disease with multifactorial etiology, unsatisfactory treatment, and a necessity for broad-spectrum active substances for cure. The mucus from Helix aspersa snail is a mixture of bioactive molecules with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-apoptotic effects. So far there are no data concerning the capacity of snail extract (SE) to affect neurodegenerative disorders. OBJECTIVE: The effects of SE from Helix aspersa on learning and memory deficits in Alzheimer's type dementia (ATD) induced by scopolamine (Sco)

Changes in the reproductive system of the snail Helix aspersa caused by mucus from the love dart.

The function of the love dart in certain species of terrestrial snails is unknown. In Helix aspersa, the dart is a sharp calcareous structure that is used to pierce the partner's skin during courtship. When expelled, the dart is covered with a thick mucus. The hypothesis tested here is that the mucus contains a biologically active substance. Extracts of the digitiform glands that produce this mucus were applied to parts of the reproductive system in vitro. The extracts triggered an initial reconfiguration of the copulatory canal that caused the bursa tract diverticulum to become more accessibl

Cross-reactivity between terrestrial snails (Helix species) and house-dust mite (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus). I. In vivo study.

Clinical reports have suggested an unusual frequency in the number of patients with food allergy to snails who are also allergic to the house-dust mite (HDM). As allergy to HDM is one of the most frequent sensitizations in atopic patients of Western countries, evaluation of the relevance of the concomitant sensitization to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and to snails is an important consideration. To evaluate the responsibility of different snail components and of snail mites for inducing in vivo hypersensitivity in patients allergic to HDM, the in vivo reactivity of patients with clinical sym

Biochemical and Pharmacological Studies on Kynurenic Acid Metabolism in the Helix pomatia-Snail Model of Learning and Memory.

Kynurenic acid (KYNA), a metabolite of the L-kynurenine pathway of L-tryptophan degradation, is an endogenous blocker of glutamate ionotropic excitatory amino acid (EAA) receptors and nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). KYNA plays a significant role in various neuropsychiatric disorders and the aging process. Some researchers have suggested that KYNA may contribute to memory impairment. In this study, we examined the impact of L-kynurenine (a KYNA substrate) and the anti-dementia drugs D-cycloserine and Cerebrolysin on kynurenine aminotransferase (KAT) activity, an enzyme forming KYNA,

[Evidence of antihypertensive effect of a land snail (Helix aspersa) by-product hydrolysate - Identification of involved peptides].

The antihypertensive potential of a land snail by-product hydrolysate, obtained after an agri-food processing of the raw material, was studied in vitro and in vivo. First, the ACE inhibitory activity of hydrolysates obtained before and after an ultrafiltration step with a 10kDa membrane cutoff was assayed. The IC50 obtained were of 98.3μg·mL-1 and 23μg·mL-1, respectively, showing a 4.2 fold increase in ACE inhibitory capacity after the ultrafiltration step. Then, ACE inhibitory capacity of the hydrolysate was followed. No significant modification of the ACE inhibition rate was observed during

Characterization of nitric oxidergic neurons in the alimentary tract of the snail Helix pomatia L.: histochemical and physiological study.

By using NADPH-diaphorase (NADPH-d) histochemistry, nitric oxide synthase (NOS) immunohistochemistry, Western blotting, and NO pharmacology, we investigated the distribution and possible function of NOS-containing neurons in different units of the alimentary tract of the snail, Helix pomatia. Discrete populations of neurons in the buccal ganglia displayed NADPH-d reactivity. NADPH-d-reactive and NOS-immunoreactive (NOS-IR) neurons were present in the caecum, and labeled fibers were found to innervate the circular muscles of the proesophagus and caecum and to form axosomatic connections with ne
