[Epizootiology and prevention of helminthiasis of game animals in Czechoslovakia and its relationship to the parasitic diseases of cattle].

Decades of surveying helminthic diseases in domestic and free-living ruminants in the CSR evidenced extensive infestation by lungworms, gastrointestinal nematodes, and liver flukes. In some years, parasitic invasion caused up to 50% of total losses of roe deer. Programmes to control systematically dictyocaulosis and fascioliasis were carried out with cattle and sheep in 1970-1980, with deer in 1981-1985. In the eighties, the incidence of F. hepatica in cattle and sheep dropped to less than 1%, of D. viviparus in cattle to 0.2%; no D. filaria is to be encountered in sheep presently. The share o

Indigenous livestock disease problems and slaughter cattle infections in the Ada district of the Ethiopian highlands.

In the farming enterprises of the Ada district, sheep and goats were most commonly diseased by pneumonia and helminthiasis among all farming animals, which led to severe losses of lambs and sheep. In cattle, helminthiasis and malnutrition conditioned considerable losses of calves. Faecal investigations showed that 72% of the cattle were infected with internal parasites, with nematodes more frequent in calves and fascioliasis among adult cattle. Pathological malformations of organs were encountered in 65% of the cattle slaughtered at the Debre Zeit abbatoir. Economically and hygienically most i

Genetics and infection dynamics of Paratrichosoma sp in farmed saltwater crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus).

Paratrichosoma-associated helminthiasis has been identified in saltwater crocodiles under intensive farming conditions. The development of sustainable integrated management practices is dependent on a detailed understanding of Paratrichosoma population genetics and infection dynamics. This study investigated the genetic relationships of Paratrichosoma sp in a population of commercially farmed saltwater crocodiles, Crocodylus porosus, in northern Australia. 18S ribosomal RNA gene sequence data were obtained from Paratrichosoma sp eggs present in the epidermis of infected animals. A high level o

Rodents Used for the Propagation of Hookworms and Haemonchus contortus.

Helminthiasis due to hookworm infestations in humans and Haemonchus contortus in sheep cause untold levels of disease and economic losses worldwide. Drug resistance is an ever-growing problem with pathogenic helminths. Thus, there is a critical need for new treatment strategies for hookworms and H. contortus that depends on animal models. Because hook- worms and H. contortus are obligate parasites, they can only be maintained using live animals. This review describes use of the Syrian golden hamster to propagate hookworms and Mongolian gerbil to propagate H. contortus.

The prevalence of intestinal helminthiasis among the Qashqai tribe in Southern Iran.

The prevalence and the intensity of intestinal helminthiasis in the Qashqai tribe of Southern Iran were studied. Infection with Ascaris Lumbricoides and Trichuris Trichura was low (6.1 and 0.8 per cent respectively) while the prevalence of Trichostrongylus was 27.6 per cent of the total stool samples examined or 63.2 per cent of the total intestinal parasites found. This might be due to the mode of life of the tribe and the proximity of its people to domestic animals.

The effect of iron and protein deficiency on the development of acquired resistance to reinfection with Nippostrongylus brasiliensis in rats.

Iron and protein deficiency delays the immunological rejection of Nippostrongylus brasiliensis from the small intestine of rats undergoing a primary infection with the parasite. In the present study, iron and protein deficiency significantly reduced acquired resistance to reinfection with N. brasiliensis. Repletion of deficient animals with iron and protein restored their capacity to mount an effective immune response to a secondary infection with the parasite. These results suggest that chemotherapy of helminthiasis should be integrated with nutritional supplementation.

Ethnobotanical knowledge on native Brazilian medicinal plants traditionally used as anthelmintic agents - A review.

Intestinal helminthiasis is a neglected disease that affects a significant portion of the global population, specifically in developing countries, where medicinal plants are widely used for therapeutic purposes. With the purpose to identify the native species used in traditional Brazilian medicine for the management of helminthiasis, ethnopharmacological books edited in Brazil documenting the folk use of medicinal plants were analyzed. The native species cited in at least three studies were selected, and bibliographic research was performed using electronic databases to identify their scientif

[The decreased susceptibility of Syrian hamsters to Opisthorchis felineus invasion after its repeated administration].

The investigations conducted on Syrian hamsters have revealed that multiple enteral infusions of cold inactivated (t = -10 degrees C) O. felineus metacercariae resulted in the formation of immunocompetent cell and fibroblast infiltrations around the branches of the portal vein. The infestation of animals by viable pathogens led to reduced accommodation of helminths and suppressed cell infiltration in the liver. It is assumed that the native population of the foci become tolerant to the disease with the penetration of noninvasive Opisthorchis larvae into their body and the development of latent

Ascorbic acid content of blood plasma, erythrocytes, leukocytes and liver in camels (Camelus dromedarius) without or with parasite infections.

Healthy camels (Camelus dromedaris) and those naturally infected with trypanosomiasis, sarcoptic mange, and helminthiasis were compared as to ascorbic acid (vitamin C) contents of red blood cells, white blood cells, whole blood, plasma, and liver. The camels were kept under natural grazing conditions in Sudan. Reduced levels of vitamin C were found in camels with parasite infections, especially in animals with trypanosomiasis. It is suggested that the low vitamin C status in infected camels is caused by increased utilization and/or decreased synthesis of vitamin C.

[Progress of researches on molecular mechanisms underlying helminth infection-mediated type 1/2 host immune responses].

Helminth infections are widespread worldwide, and pose a serious threat to human health and animal husbandry development. Understanding of helminth-host interactions is critical to effective control and ultimate eradication of helminthiasis. Following host infections, helminth infections firstly initiate innate immune responses and then mediate adaptive immune responses. Type 1 immune responses are predominant at early stage of helminth infections, which mainly play anti-infective actions, and type 2 immune responses are predominant at late stage of infections, which are associated with helmin

Advantages and limitations of diagnostic procedures for zoonotic helminth infections in feces.

Helminthiasis is a common infection in both humans and other animal populations and negatively affects the health of the host, causing a range of morbidity and even mortality, especially in young people and those with weakened immune systems. A variety of diagnostic procedures with a number of modifications are available to identify the sources of infection and to assess the epidemiological situation, the effectiveness of parasite control programs, anthelmintic treatment, and the prevention of drug resistance. These can be simple and cheap methods - for example, stool smear examination - or mo

Other vector-borne parasitic diseases: animal helminthiases, bovine besnoitiosis and malaria.

The parasitic diseases discussed elsewhere in this issue of the Scientific and Technical Review are not the only ones to make use of biological vectors (such as mosquitoes or ticks) or mechanical vectors (such as horse flies or Stomoxys flies). The authors discuss two major groups of vector-borne parasitic diseases: firstly, helminthiasis, along with animal filariasis and onchocerciasis, which are parasitic diseases that often take a heavytoll on artiodactylsthroughoutthe world; secondly, parasitic diseases caused by vector-borne protists, foremost of which is bovine besnoitiosis (or anasarca

Mortality of domesticated java deer attributed to Surra.

This paper reports an outbreak of trypanosomiasis due to Trypanosoma evansi in Java deer (Cervus timorensis) on a government deer farm in Lenggong, Perak. Seventeen adult female Java deer were found dead within a week. Symptoms of dullness, inappetence, anaemia, anorexia, respiratory distress and recumbency were seen prior to death in the infected Java deer. Beside trypanosomiasis, other parasitic infections such as theileriosis, helminthiasis and ectoparasite infestation were also recorded. Post mortem results showed generalized anaemia in most animals with isolated cases of jaundice. There w

Assessing the applications and efficacy of using helminthophagous fungi to control canine gastrointestinal parasites.

Helminths are a major challenge in dog breeding, particularly affecting young animals and posing a significant zoonotic risk. The widespread use of anthelmintics to treat gastrointestinal helminth infections in companion animals is common. However, these chemical products generate residues that can have adverse effects on animal, human and environmental health. In addition to the challenge of parasite resistance to treatment, there is an urgent need to explore and discuss complementary and sustainable methods of controlling helminthiases in these animals. In this context, nematophagous or helm
