Toddlers' Helping Behavior Is Affected by the Effortful Costs Associated With Helping Others.

Although the presence of early helping behavior has been firmly established, it is unclear to what extent children are willing to adopt costs to help others, as well as how this willingness changes as children get older. Canadian 21- to 36-month-olds (N = 48) participated in four helping tasks varying in the type and degree of effort required to help (lifting force, cognitive load, the number of steps in a task, and pushing force). When costs were lower, toddlers were not only more likely to help but also provided help more readily and helped in ways that prioritized others' needs. Importantly

Helping parents address their child's sexual behavior problems.

This article describes a model for helping parents address their child's sexually inappropriate behavior. The model focuses on: supporting parents and facilitating their ability to accept their child's sexual problems, processing their affective and cognitive reactions, and devising a plan to help parents talk directly with their child about the sexually problematic behavior. Each step of the model outlines the rationale and interventions used to accomplish prescribed goals.

Adolescent Social Isolation Induces Persistent Impairments in Emotional Discrimination and Helping Behavior.

Prosocial behaviors, helpful actions directed toward the well-being of others, are an essential component of social behavior. Adolescence is a particularly sensitive period for the development of social behaviors, yet how social experience during this window shapes prosocial behavior remains poorly understood. Here, we used behavioral assays to examine how social isolation at different ages affects emotional discrimination and affiliative helping behavior in mice of both sexes. We found that adult mice raised in social isolation since weaning failed to allogroom distressed conspecifics and wer

Mediodorsal thalamus-projecting anterior cingulate cortex neurons modulate helping behavior in mice.

Many species living in groups can perform prosocial behaviors via voluntarily helping others with or without benefits for themselves. To provide a better understanding of the neural basis of such prosocial behaviors, we adapted a preference lever-switching task in which mice can prevent harm to others by switching from using a lever that causes shocks to a conspecific one that does not. We found the harm avoidance behavior was mediated by self-experience and visual and social contact but not by gender or familiarity. By combining single-unit recordings and analysis of neural trajectory decodin

Caregiving Reconsidered: How Confounding Helping with Suffering has Obscured a Major Health-Promoting Behavior.

The widely cited claim that informal caregiving (e.g., providing care to a spouse or parent with dementia) increases mortality risk has shaped public policy, media narratives, and clinical practice for over two decades. However, this claim originated from a single study and multiple other population-based studies have found the opposite: that caregiving is associated with reduced mortality. We argue that the disconnect between what is widely accepted and what the data actually show arises because the construct of "caregiving" confounds two psychologically and physiologically distinct experienc

Helping the Noncompliant Child and Child Behavior Outcomes: An Exploratory Examination of Financial Strain.

Theoretical models and empirical research have highlighted the impact of economic disadvantage on children's psychosocial development broadly and the onset, maintenance, and treatment of early-onset (3-8 years) behavior disorders (BDs) more specifically. In the context of intervention, evidence suggests that economic disadvantage may pose risk for diminished parent-mediated treatment efficacy (e.g., Behavioral Parent Training [BPT]) given its impact on salient factors in the family system. Though, studies have shown significant variability in BPT outcomes within families experiencing economic

Helping COPD patients change health behavior in order to improve their quality of life.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the most prevalent and debilitating diseases in adults worldwide and is associated with a deleterious effect on the quality of life of affected patients. Although it remains one of the leading causes of global mortality, the prognosis seems to have improved in recent years. Even so, the number of patients with COPD and multiple comorbidities has risen, hindering their management and highlighting the need for futures changes in the model of care. Together with standard medical treatment and therapy adherence--essential to optimizing disease

Help-Seeking Behaviors of Young People with Problematic Sexualized Behaviors.

A substantial proportion of all reported child sexual abuse is perpetrated by other young people, though it is challenging to accurately depict its prevalence. Even less is known about the help-seeking behaviors of young people. Understanding how they seek help for their own problematic sexualized behavior is crucial to better inform therapeutic interventions and early intervention opportunities. This study used an administrative dataset of contacts (N = 901) received by Kids Helpline over nine years. Given the paucity of research on this topic, our approach to draw upon the contacts made to K

The Relationship between Workplace Incivility and Helping Behavior: Roles of Job Dissatisfaction and Political Skill.

This article investigates the mediating role of job dissatisfaction in the relationship between employees' perceptions of workplace incivility and their helping behavior, as well as the buffering role of political skill in this process. Three-wave, time-lagged data collected from employees and their supervisors revealed that employees' exposure to workplace incivility diminished their helping behavior through their sense of job dissatisfaction. This mediating role of job dissatisfaction was less salient, however, to the extent that employees were equipped with political skill. For organization

To Help or Not to Help? Prosocial Behavior, Its Association With Well-Being, and Predictors of Prosocial Behavior During the Coronavirus Disease Pandemic.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic fundamentally disrupted humans' social life and behavior. Public health measures may have inadvertently impacted how people care for each other. This study investigated prosocial behavior, its association well-being, and predictors of prosocial behavior during the first COVID-19 pandemic lockdown and sought to understand whether region-specific differences exist. Participants (N = 9,496) from eight regions clustering multiple countries around the world responded to a cross-sectional online-survey investigating the psychological consequences of the fi

Does Helping Others Always Benefit Health? Longitudinal Evidence on the Relationship between Helping Behavior and Depression: The Mediating Role of Life Satisfaction and the Moderating Effect of IADL.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to explore whether helping behavior is always beneficial for alleviating depression or if there is a "moderation is the key" effect. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study focused on a sample of 7,436 participants from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). The 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD-10) was used to identify the presence of depression. Linear mixed model and Quasi-Bayesian estimation methods were used to explore the mediating role of life satisfaction in the relationship between helping behavior and depressi

Blood donors' helping behavior is driven by warm glow: more evidence for the blood donor benevolence hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: The benevolence hypothesis (both donor and recipient gain) suggests that blood donors, compared to non-blood donors have a general altruistic motivational preference based on warm glow (i.e., "I donate because it makes me feel good"). With objective behavioral economics tests of altruism and warm-glow giving, this paper offers the first direct experimental test of this hypothesis. The prediction that blood donors will be motivated in general by warm glow was compared to predictions from other theoretical models: strong reciprocity and empathy. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Four experi

Determinants of reluctance to perform CPR among residents and applicants: the impact of experience on helping behavior.

BACKGROUND: Though mouth-to-mouth resuscitation (MMR) is widely endorsed as a useful lifesaving technique, studies have shown that health care professionals are reluctant to perform it. To characterize the circumstances which facilitate this reluctance among physicians, we have surveyed current and future residency trainees regarding attitudes toward providing ventilation by this method to strangers experiencing arrest in the community. METHODS: A total of 280 categorical emergency medicine (EM) and internal medicine (IM) house officers and respective program applicants at a 655 bed Brooklyn,

[Behavior therapy and antidepressive drugs. What helps with anxiety?].

Up to 25% of patients seen in the doctor's office are suffering from some sort of anxiety disorder. In accordance with the ICD-10 classification, such disorders include panic disorders with or without agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorders, social phobia, specific phobia and mixed forms comprising anxiety and depression. Comorbidity with other anxiety disorders and depression is common. Symptoms reported by affected patients may suggest organic disease, which first must be excluded. All patients with severe persistent anxiety states require psychotherapeutic measures (cognitive behavioral

Pathways to psychosis: help-seeking behavior in the prodromal phase.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of pathways to care by help-seeking patients prior to the onset of psychosis may help to improve the identification of at-risk patients. This study explored the history of help-seeking behavior in secondary mental health care services prior to the onset of the first episode of psychosis. METHOD: The psychiatric case register in The Hague was used to identify a cohort of 1753 people in the age range of 18-35 at first contact who developed a psychotic disorder in the period from 1 January 2005 to 31 December 2009. We retrospectively examined the diagnoses made at first con

Harmful help: the costs of backing-up behavior in teams.

Prior research on backing-up behavior has indicated that it is beneficial to teams (C. O. L. H. Porter, 2005; C. O. L. H. Porter et al., 2003). This literature has focused on how backing-up behavior aids backup recipients in tasks in which workload is unevenly distributed among team members. The authors of the present study examined different contexts of workload distribution and found that, in addition to the initial benefits to backup recipients, there are initial and subsequent costs. Backing-up behavior leads backup providers to neglect their own taskwork, especially when workload is evenl

The effect of high-quality voice on observing employees' helping behavior among Chinese employees: a moderated mediation model.

BACKGROUND: Drawing on social exchange theory, this study targets Chinese workplace employees and aims to explore the relationship between voicers' high-quality voice and observing employees' helping behavior within the Chinese organizational context, while considering the mediator of perceived benefits of resource access, along with the moderating role of goal competitiveness. METHOD: This study employed a two-wave time-lagged survey design to examine the theoretical model. A total of 226 employees in China were used to test our hypotheses by adopting hierarchical multiple regression method.

How Authoritarian Leadership Affects Employee's Helping Behavior? The Mediating Role of Rumination and Moderating Role of Psychological Ownership.

Interpersonal helping behaviors, i.e., voluntarily assisting colleagues for their workplace related problems, have received immense amount of scholarly attention due to their significant impacts on organizational effectiveness. Among several other factors, authoritarian leadership style could influence helping behavior within organizations. Furthermore, this relationship could be mediated by workplace stressor such as rumination, known as a critical psychological health component leading to depressive symptoms, hopelessness and pessimism. In the meantime, less research attention has devoted to
