BACKGROUND: Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EH) is a rare vascular tumor whose localization in the vulva is extremely rare.
CASE: The present case report refers to a 19-year-old Brazilian woman admitted to hospital with an extensive lesion of granulomatous appearance on the right labium majus. Following confirmation of the diagnosis of epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, the only treatment consisted of hemivulvectomy and right inguinal lymphadenectomy. Patient was lost to follow-up for 8 years after recovery from surgery. She reappeared 4 years ago and is now being followed-up. There is no si

We present the CT, thoracoscopic, and histological findings of a 55-year-old female with pleuropulmonary epithelioid hemangioendothelioma. The CT scan revealed pleuropulmonary lesions, and thoracoscopy allowed direct visualization and biopsy of the lesions. Histological analysis confirmed the diagnosis, emphasizing the utility of combining imaging, endoscopic, and pathological methods in diagnosing this rare tumor.

The article describes the clinical, radiological and pathological features of epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE) in 27 adult patients, mainly female. In all cases, with the exception of one, there was a benign course of the disease over many years with a tendency to stabilize growth, the morphological sign of which was the development of widespread sclerotic changes. With the help of immunohistochemical method, the endothelial nature of EHE cells and its relatively low proliferative potential were confirmed. Clinical and morphological features of EHE raise the question of the essence of pr

Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE) is a rare tumor of vascular origin. While it can be found in any tissue, it is most often found in lung and liver and usually has an intermediate behavior. EHEs originating from pleural tissue have been less frequently described than those from other sites. Furthermore, to date, all of the cited pleural EHEs were described as highly aggressive. In the present report, we describe a rare case of pleural EHE extending to lung and bone in a 31-year-old woman. The histological diagnosis was confirmed by both conventional examination and immunohistochemistry. H

Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE) is a rare vascular tumor of endothelial cell origin. We describe an EHE arising on the plantar surface of the foot that was treated as verruca vulgaris for several years before a biopsy showed EHE. We discuss the clinical and histopathologic differential diagnoses for these tumors and review additional cases in which EHE has been mistaken for benign entities clinically.

We describe the case of an 18-year-old male Army reservist presenting with left lower extremity pain for which he was initially diagnosed with a stress injury. After failing conservative treatment, a radiograph was obtained showing a "lacelike" appearance of the medullary bone in the foot and ankle. Magnetic resonance imaging subsequently demonstrated widespread polyostotic marrow replacement with coarsened trabeculations. A biopsy was obtained which diagnosed the patient with polyostotic epithelioid hemangioendothelioma which is the most common malignant vascular tumor of bone. The patient ul

The paper describes a rare case of mediastinal epithelioid hemangioendothelioma characterized by a population of fusiform cells, metaplastic osteogenesis, and aggressive behavior. A 5.5x4-cm encapsulated mass was found in the anterior mediastinum of a 19-year-old female patient. A bone density tumor was sealed with lung tissue and it occluded the lumen of the left subclavian vein. Microscopically, the tumor was composed of foci of the so-called "blister cells" typical of epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, anastomosing chains of epithelioid cells in the microhyaline stroma, diffusely located bon

BACKGROUND: Epithelioid hemangioendotheliomas are rare vascular tumors, mostly originating from soft tissue, lungs or liver.
CASE REPORT: A 58-year-old woman was admitted to hospital because of upper congestion, Horner's syndrome and segmental sensory disturbance. MRI of the spine showed a spinal mass, reaching from the seventh cervical vertebra to the fourth chest vertebra. Because of worsening of upper congestion and progressive neurological impairment, the patient had to be operated twice. Unfortunately a surgical excision of the infiltrating tumor in sano was not possible and the patient

PURPOSE-OBJECTIVE: Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE) is a rare vascular malignancy with varying biologic behavior. The purpose of this study was to identify imaging findings most characteristic of EHE.
METHODS: Retrospective review of clinical and imaging records in patients referred to our Vascular Anomalies Center over a 17 year period with biopsy proven EHE.
RESULTS: We evaluated 29 patients (17 F) with median age of 16 years (range 2-76 y). The most common presenting symptoms were pain (n = 13) and palpable mass (n = 7). 22 (70%) had multifocal disease. Most common sites of involvem

Epithelioid hemangioendotheliomas are rare endothelial tumors that may manifest in a multitude of anatomic locations. The inferior vena cava (IVC) is an unusual site of primary tumor, with only two cases reported to date. We present a patient with an IVC epithelioid hemangioendothelioma who required IVC resection and lymphadenectomy. The patient made a good recovery and remains disease-free 4 years after resection. IVC tumors represent a unique challenge, not the least because of this tumor's unpredictable and, at present, undefined behavior, but also owing to the vital anatomic structures req

An intrathoracic mass was discovered on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the spine in a 37-year-old Caucasian man with a 1 year history of progressively severe upper back pain. A subsequent chest CT scan indicated a 4 cm left hilar mass, extending to the apex and encasing a portion of the left bronchus and pulmonary artery. Initial bronchoscopic and transthoracic biopsies failed to obtain diagnostic material. The patient underwent thoracotomy and was found to have a locally advanced, surgically unresectable lung tumor, involving the pleura, pericardium and diaphragm. The patient failed to r

This report concerns a case of hepatic epithelioid hemangioendothelioma presenting with liver enlargement, multiple hepatic calcifications on the plain abdominal film and bilateral interstitial pneumonia. Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma is an unusual soft tissue tumor of "intermediate malignancy" characterized by a multicentric involvement of the liver and originating from endothelial cells. Histopathologic diagnosis may be difficult because of possible confusion with sclerosing epithelial tumors.

A previously healthy 33-year-old woman presented with several months of intermittent right upper quadrant discomfort, early satiety, bloating, and nausea. She had no remarkable past medical or surgical history, specifically no known malignancy, chronic liver disease, or substance abuse. She had four biologic children and reported no current or prior oral contraceptive use. Physical examination revealed normal vital signs and a soft, nontender abdomen. Laboratory studies included a hepatic function panel, which was normal. Results for serum tumor marker tests included an α-fetoprotein level of

Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma is a rare vascular sarcoma commonly occurring in the liver, soft tissues, and organs of the chest cavity. This study provides a detailed description of the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of epithelioid hemangioendothelioma of the ovary in a 71-year-old patient. According to the pathohistological examination, a mesenchymal tumor of the ovary with epithelioid cells was diagnosed. The immunohistochemical tests confirmed the diagnosis of epithelioid hemangioendothelioma. This clinical case is of interest for clinical practitioners due to the rare l

We present a rare case of epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE) in the nasal cavity of a 40-year-old Indian male who presented with history of intermittent epistaxis. The lesion was tested for a panel of immunohistochemical markers like vimentin, CD31, CD34, Factor VIII, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and Ki67. Immunohistochemically, the neoplasm showed striking positivity for vimentin, CD31, CD34 and weak positivity for VEGF; positivity was also noted for Factor VIII especially in the miniature intracytoplasmic vascular lumina.

Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EH) is an uncommon tumor of endothelial origin. It can develop in any tissue and can be multicentric or metastatic. The usual course is a slow progression. Imaging techniques are generally useful in determining the extent of the disease. A case of EH involving bone marrow and mediastinum is described. We discuss the use of FDG PET scanning in EH, showing its use in detecting bone marrow involvement and determining the extent of the disease.
