Wrist hemiarthroplasty is a surgical technique involving partial arthroplasty of the radiocarpal joint. Depending on the pathology the surgeon is treating, the surgery can be radial-sided, radial-sided with a proximal row carpectomy, or carpal sided. The rationale for performing a wrist hemiarthroplasty is to avoid complications associated with total wrist arthroplasty. This may be a better option for younger, more active patients to avoid complications and lifelong activity restrictions inherent to total wrist arthroplasty. Here we review the current literature on wrist hemiarthroplasty and d

BACKGROUND: Wrist hemiarthroplasty has emerged as a motion-sparing option for severe wrist arthritis. It is technically easy with advantages of limited bone resection and no risk of nonunion. Given the relative infancy of the procedure in clinical practice, there are limited data on patient outcomes.
METHODS: Eleven patients were treated with wrist reconstructive hemiarthroplasty. Indications included 1 patient with scaphoid nonunion advanced collapse, 9 patients with scapholunate advanced collapse, and 1 patient with capitolunate arthritis. Average age was 63 years; average follow-up was 4 y

It has been stated in the literature that a bipolar hemiarthroplasty has a lower risk of dislocation compared to a unipolar hemiarthroplasty. As this statement has not been substantiated we undertook a systematic review of the literature of published articles from the last 40 years. In addition we used our own database of hip fractures. One hundred and thirty-three published articles were included in the review to give a total of 23,107 cases. The overall dislocation rate for all types of hemiarthroplasty was 791/23,107 (3.4%). An increased risk of dislocation was associated with a posterior s

A retrospective study was undertaken on 171 patients who had suffered a subcapital fracture of the neck of the femur between 1982 and 1986. The aim was to compare the dislocation rates in bipolar and monopolar endoprostheses. The basic surgical approaches were utilized: the posterior and direct lateral. Four endoprostheses were employed: Thompson's Moore's (monopolar), Monk's 'hard top', and Charnley-Hastings' (bipolar). There was no significant difference in the dislocation rates between monopolar and bipolar devices. It is concluded that the bipolar devices do not offer any additional protec

Hip hemiarthroplasty is a commonly performed orthopedic surgery, used to treat proximal femur fractures in the elderly population. Although hip hemiarthroplasty is frequently successful in addressing these injuries, complications can occur. Commonly seen complications include dislocation, periprosthetic fracture, acetabular erosion, and leg-length inequality. Less frequently seen complications include neurovascular injury and capsular interposition. This article presents a comprehensive review of the complications associated with the management of hip hemiarthroplasty. [Orthopedics. 2023;46(4)

Hemiarthroplasty is a common treatment for femoral neck fractures in the elderly population. The main complications are periprosthetic dislocation and infection, which potentially impact morbidity and quality of life and may contribute to mortality. This procedure can be technically demanding, and adequate closure of the capsule and soft tissue cannot be emphasized enough. One advantage of a bipolar prosthesis is that it can be easily converted to a total hip arthroplasty without replacing the femoral component and with approximately the same complication rates as a revision total hip arthropl

Hemiarthroplasty is a common procedure for treatment of displaced femoral neck fractures in low-demand patients. As hip fracture incidence continues to increase, the need for revision hemiarthroplasty is also expected to increase. Multiple etiologies can result in a failed hemiarthroplasty, including persistent pain, infection, instability, leg-length discrepancy, and trauma. Preoperative clinical, radiographic, and laboratory assessments are critical in determining the etiology of the painful hemiarthroplasty. The standard of care for surgical management of failed hemiarthroplasty is conversi

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis of the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint is a painful, disabling condition. It can interfere with the ability to run and even walk without pain. An implant of cobalt-chrome steel alloy to replace the base of the proximal phalanx is one solution. The purpose of this study is to review our results with one of these implants.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A series of 23 cases of hemiarthroplasty for the treatment of hallux rigidus from June 2000 to October 2001 has been evaluated using the AOFAS rating system, and the results are presented.
RESULTS: The average preoperat

INTRODUCTION: Hip hemiarthroplasty is a common procedure for femoral neck fractures in the geriatric population. Immediate implant-related complications such as dislocation, periprosthetic fracture, and leg length discrepancy are uncommon, but should be ruled out with the use of post-operative X-rays. There is some debate as to the timing of the post-operative X-rays. Some orthopaedic units prefer immediate postoperative in theatre X-rays, while other units opt for departmental X-ray the following day. The aim of this study was to compare in theatre postoperative X-rays versus departmental nex

There are a variety of treatment options available for proximal humerus fractures, including nonoperative management, open reduction internal fixation with screws, locking plates, intramedullary nailing, or suture fixation, and arthroplasty, including hemiarthroplasty and total shoulder replacements. Fracture characteristics, including the number of fracture parts and involvement of the humeral head and glenoid and the patient's functional status and postoperative goals help dictate the optimal choice. Although the indications for hemiarthroplasty as treatment for severe proximal humerus fract

We report a case of hypoglossal nerve damage after shoulder hemiarthroplasty with the patient in "beach chair" position, performed with general anesthesia with orotracheal intubation, and without complications. An ultrasound-guided interscalene block was previously performed in an alert patient. After the intervention, the patient showed clinical symptomatology compatible with paralysis of the right hypoglossal nerve that completely disappeared after 4 weeks. Mechanisms such as hyperextension of the neck during intubation, endotracheal tube cuff pressure, excessive hyperextension, or head late

PURPOSE: To evaluate early functional outcomes of hemiarthroplasty for 3- or 4-part proximal humeral fractures.
METHODS: 16 men and 11 women aged 27 to 83 (mean, 56) years underwent hemiarthroplasty for comminuted 3-part (n=13) or 4-part (n=14) proximal humeral fractures. All the patients reported normal shoulder function prior to injury. The range of shoulder motion and muscle power were evaluated, as were subjective pain and satisfaction (using the UCLA scoring system).
RESULTS: At the final follow-up, the mean maximum abduction was 111º (SD, 47º; range, 30º-180º), and the mean maximum for

Currently, there is little information on the outcome of humeral head replacement for steroid-associated osteonecrosis of the humeral head. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcome of patients who underwent humeral head replacement for steroid-associated osteonecrosis to determine the results, risk factors for an unsatisfactory outcome, and rates of revision surgery. Between 1980 and 2000, 32 shoulder hemiarthroplasties were performed for steroid-associated osteonecrosis. We included 31 hemiarthroplasties in 25 patients with a minimum 2-year follow-up (mean, 12.0 years) in the stu

BACKGROUND: Femoral neck fracture is the commonest fracture among the elderly who frequently have co-morbid medical conditions. It commonly follows trivial falls at home. Prosthetic replacement with Austin Moore prothesis is one of the treatment options open to Orthopaedic Surgeons in this age group who need to be mobilised as early as possible to prevent the complications of prolonged immobilization. This study shows our experience with Austin Moore hemiarthroplasty [AMH] as a treatment option for femoral neck fractures over a 10 year period.
METHOD: Hospital records of 46 out of 59 patients
