Induced defense by Bemisia tabaci biotype B (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) in tobacco against Myzus persicae (Hemiptera: Aphididae).

Myzus persicae and Bemisia tabaci are serious pests of tobacco and can occur simultaneously on the same plant. We found that tobacco plants infested by whiteflies had fewer aphids than those without whiteflies. To determine whether B. tabaci feeding could induce plant defense against aphids locally and systemically, we determined the effects of B. tabaci on several biological parameters of M. persicae on tobacco. Infestation of B. tabaci nymphs reduced survival rates of M. persicae by 30.0%. In three generations, M. persicae populations increased 1,091-fold on uninfested plants compared with 2

Natural enemies of armored scales (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) and soft scales (Hemiptera: Coccidae) in Chile: Molecular and morphological identification.

Scale insects (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha: Coccomorpha) are key pests of agricultural crops and ornamental plants worldwide. Their populations are difficult to control, even with insecticides, due to their cryptic habits. Moreover, there is growing concern over the use of synthetic pesticides for their control, due to deleterious environmental effects and the emergence of resistant populations of target pests. In this context, biological control may be an effective and sustainable approach. Hymenoptera Chalcidoidea includes natural enemies of scale insects that have been successfully used in ma

Taxonomic corrections on Cronion (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Plataspidae).

Vollenhoven (1864) presented a preliminary report and subsequently (Vollenhoven 1865) a detailed description of a new genus of pentatomoid true bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera), Poseidon Vollenhoven, 1864, with a single included species, P. malayanus Vollenhoven, 1864; the species is therefore the type species of the genus by monotypy. The genus was placed into Scutelleridae by Vollenhoven (1864, 1865), but the latter taxon was defined broadly, in a way much different from the current concept of this family (see e.g. Rider et al. 2017); Stål (1876) transferred it into Plataspidae defined in the p

Feeding by Melanaphis sacchari (Hemiptera: Aphididae) Facilitates Use of Sorghum by Rhopalosiphum padi (Hemiptera: Aphididae), but Reciprocal Effects Are Negative.

In the process of feeding, aphids modify the physiology of their host plants in species-specific ways, and plant responses to these aggressions are often genotype- or cultivar-specific. Thus, different aphid species sharing a host can influence each other's fitness via plant-mediated interactions, usually with negative and asymmetric impacts. Here, we show that feeding by the sugarcane aphid, Melanaphis sacchari Zehntner, can improve the suitability of sorghum as a host plant for the bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi L. Whereas the reciprocal effects were generally negative for sugarca

The morphology of integumental brochosomes in Cicadellidae (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha).

Brochosomes, secretory microstructures composed of protein-lipid compounds, are synthesized in the Malpighian tubules of leafhoppers (Cicadellidae). These specialized particles play essential biological roles, notably providing hydrophobic protection against environmental contaminants and self-generated honeydew residues. This investigation systematically examined the integumental brochosomes morphology in 28 Cicadellidae species representing 12 subfamilies, using optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), supplemented by morphological data from 17 additional species extracted from publis

Histamine Excretion by the Common Bed Bug (Hemiptera: Cimicidae).

The common bed bug (Cimex lectularius L.) is a hematophagous pest species that lives in close proximity to humans. Following a blood meal, bed bugs deposit fecal material indoors. The feces contain a variety of compounds, including histamine, which serves as a component of their aggregation pheromone. Histamine is a pivotal mammalian immune modulator, and recently it was shown to be present in high concentrations in household dust from homes infested with bed bugs. To better understand the dynamics of histamine excretion, we analyzed bed bug fecal material from different life stages and popula

A new synonymy in East Asian Urostylididae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera).

Urostylididae is a moderately species-rich family of phytophagous, mainly arboricolous pentatomoid true bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) currently comprising 8 genera and 172 species (Rider et al. 2018). All described species occur in Asia, but undescribed taxa are present in Madagascar (P. Štys, pers. comm.). The present short paper was prompted by a recent contribution by Kim et al. (2018), who reviewed the species of the genus Urostylis Westwood, 1837, occurring in Korea, including the description of a purportedly new species, U. koreana Kim Jung, 2018. The identity of the latter species is cl

Genetic variation in Bactericera cockerelli (Hemiptera: Triozidae) from Mexico.

Bactericera cockerelli (Sulc) is a significant pest of several solanacious crops in Mexico and the United States since 1970. In 2001 significant outbreaks of outstanding importance were observed for the first time in areas where infestations of this insect were historically rare. Molecular studies revealed that this was because of the development of a new biotype of B. cockerelli that had become adapted to south-western United States, further demonstrating that this genetic differentiation was reflected in the survival, development cycle, fertility, and growth rate of both the native biotype a

Systematics of Mepraia (Hemiptera-Reduviidae): cytogenetic and molecular variation.

The haematophagous insects of the subfamily Triatominae (Hemiptera-Reduviidae) have great epidemiological importance as vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease. Mepraia was originally described as a monotypic genus comprised of Mepraia spinolai, distributed along coastal areas of northern Chile (from Region I to the Metropolitan Region). Recently, some M. spinolai populations have been ranked as a new species named Mepraia gajardoi. Several populations along the distribution range of the genus were sampled, and genetic differentiation was studied based upon the anal

Aphid (Hemiptera: Aphididae) resistance in wheat near-isogenic lines.

Plant and aphid biomass, photosynthetic pigment (chlorophylls a and b and carotenoids) concentrations, and chlorophyll a/b and chlorophyll/carotenoid ratios were quantified in aphid-infested 'Tugela' near-isogenic lines (Tugela, Tugela-Dn1, Tugela-Dn2, and Tugela-Dn5). The objectives were to quantify changes of photosynthetic pigments (chlorophylls a and b, and carotenoids) caused by aphid feeding and assess resistance of wheat isolines through aphid and plant biomass analysis. Biomass of bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae)-infested plants was lower than Russi

A baited trap for kissing bugs (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae).

Chagas disease is a key vector-borne disease. This illness is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi Chagas, which is transmitted by triatomine bugs. Largely, the control of this disease relies on reducing such contact. We optimized the performance of a box trap in laboratory conditions to capture four triatomine species: Triatoma pallidipennis (Stål), Triatoma infestans Klug, Triatoma phyllosoma (Burmeister), and Rhodnius prolixus Stål. We varied four components for a box trap: material, color, height, and bait attractants. All species were captured more in corrugated cardboard traps than in other trap

Evidence for rice tolerance to Tibraca limbativentris (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae).

BACKGROUND: The rice stalk stink bug Tibraca limbativentris (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) is one of the most important rice pests in Brazil. The search for cultivars that tolerate insect injury is necessary to complement other less aggressive methods of pest suppression. The combination of integrated pest management tactics will reduce insecticide applications and improve the safety of food production. Here, we tested the tolerance response of Xingu, Canela de Ferro and Primavera rice genotypes in glasshouse experiments. In addition, we measured tolerance expressed in a variety of physiological re

Methods for Testing Repellents Against Bed Bugs (Hemiptera: Cimicidae).

Bed bug repellents should not only prevent humans from being bitten but impede an infestation of personal belongings. Only a few test proposals for evaluating the efficacy of repellents against bed bugs have been published so far. In the present study, two test systems were assessed for efficacy testing with five potential bed bug repellents (cinnamon oil, icaridin, N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET), permethrin, and margosa extract). The first test setup was a harborage choice test system that consisted of a crystallizing dish with a treated and an untreated harborage. Sixty minutes and 24

Resistance to Fipronil in the Common Bed Bug (Hemiptera: Cimicidae).

Cimex lectularius L. populations have been documented worldwide to be resistant to pyrethroids and neonicotinoids, insecticides that have been widely used to control bed bugs. There is an urgent need to discover new active ingredients with different modes of action to control bed bug populations. Fipronil, a phenylpyrazole that targets the GABA receptor, has been shown to be highly effective on bed bugs. However, because fipronil shares the same target site with dieldrin, we investigated the potential of fipronil resistance in bed bugs. Resistance ratios in eight North American populations and

Interleg coordination in free-walking bug Erthesina fullo (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae).

Insects can adapt their walking patterns to complex and varied environments and retain the ability to walk even after significant changes in their physical attributes, such as amputation. Although the interleg coordination of intact insects has been widely described in previous studies, the adaptive walking patterns in free-walking insects with amputation of 1 or more legs are still unclear. The pentatomid bug Erthesina fullo exhibits a tripod gait, when walking freely on horizontal substrates, like many other insects. In this study, amputations were performed on this species to investigate ch
