[Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome].

The authors describe the illness of a Czech soldier who while serving in the UNPROFOR forces in an area with the endemic occurrence of hantaviruses became infected with this agent and developed haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. The severe clinical course which called for seven haemodialyzation procedures led to the patient's recovery. The authors describe the course of the disease and epidemiological circumstances.

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome.

Hantaviruses, the causative agents of HFRS, have become more widely recognized. Epidemiologic evidence indicates that these pathogens are distributed worldwide. People who come into close contact with infected rodents in urban, rural and laboratory environments are at particular risk. Transmission to man occurs mainly via the respiratory tract. The epidemiology of the hantaviruses is intimately linked to the ecology of their principal vertebrate hosts. Four distinct viruses are now recognized within the hantavirus genus and that number is likely to increase to six very soon; however, further i

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in Montenegro.

The objective of the study was to analyze the epidemiological features of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Montenegro. The study included 169 cases of HFRS diagnosed in the period between 1995 and 2005 according to the clinical symptoms and serological confirmation. For the analysis of the demographic characteristics of the cases, as well as of the chronological and topographical features of the disease, a descriptive epidemiological method was employed. The average incidence rate in the observed period was 2.6 per 100,000. In the observed period, 8 people died; the average case…

[Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in children].

Seven patients, 4 girls and 3 boys, aged 3 to 12 years /X = 7.14/ affected by haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome /HFRS/., were hospitalized at the University Children's Hospital in Belgrade during the last two years /January 1988-January 1990/. The diagnosis was established on the basis of clinical features, epidemiological data and autopsy findings in one patient while in the others the diagnosis of HFRS was confirmed serologically by indirect immunoflorescence tests on Vero E 6 cells. A significant increase in antibody titre against Hantaan virus was found in all serologically tested pat

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in Korea.

Several clinical variants of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) are caused by Hantaan and related viruses. Since 1951, 500-900 patients with HFRS have been hospitalized annually in Korea. Although HFRS is associated primarily with rural areas, it is now being recognized as an urban problem and a particular hazard to laboratory staff using rodents for research. Recently, epidemic outbreaks of leptospirosis and scrub typhus have occurred during the HFRS season, leading to confusion in diagnosis. Serologic diagnosis of HFRS is based on the demonstration of IgM antibodies to Hantaviruses…

[Ocular changes in hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome].

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a rodent-originating zoonotic disease caused by Puumala and Dobrava viruses, which belong to the genus Hantavirus. The most prominent ocular change in HFRS is transient myopia, which lasts for up to one week and is due to a forward movement of the ocular anterior diaphragm and thickening of the lens. Other ophthalmic manifestations of HFRS are eyelid edema, conjunctival injection with or without hemorrhages, chemosis, anterior uveitis, retinal edema with or without hemorrhages, and photophobia. Acute glaucoma attacks, which are rare, could be exp…

[Febrile cytolysis disclosing hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome].

We report the case of a 40-year-old-man who developed febrile cytolysis as the presenting sign of hemorragic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). On admission, he had fever (40 degrees C) and epigastric pain. The AST level was at 2N, the ALT at 3N. There was a thrombocytopenia (61 000/mm(3)) without anemia or hyperleukocytosis. Three days after admission, the platelet count decreased to 40 000/mm(3), serum urea and creatinine increased from normal rate to 10.8mmol/l, 204.0 micromol/l, respectively. The HIV, HBV, HCV, leptospirosis antibodies were negative. The Hantavirus serology was positive (Ig

Acute renal failure due to hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome.

The aim of our study was to analyze the clinical course and outcome of acute renal failure (ARF) in patients with hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). From 1983 to 1995, we treated 33 patients (27 males, 6 females) aged from 16 to 71 years. Half of patients were connected with work at a farm or in a forest. The disease was confirmed serologically with indirect immunofluorescence test (IFT) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In 18 patients percutaneous kidney needle biopsies were analyzed. In 85% of the cases, the disease broke out from June to October. The most frequently …

Acalculous cholecystitis associated with hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome.

Hantaviruses are responsible for various types of hemorrhagic fevers depending on the involved subtype. In Europe, Puumala virus is responsible for an epidemic nephropathy. This infection can be complicated by severe abdominal pain. A rarely reported cause of this presenting symptom is acalculous cholecystitis, which must be integrated in the clinicobiological spectrum and should not lead to a surgical sanction. Its presence seems to be correlated with the severity of the disease, whose main pathophysiological phenomenon is plasma leakage induced by a microvascular endothelial dysfunction. We

[Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome coursing with neurologic symptomatology].

At present it is known 2 forms of hantavirus infections in humans: hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) induced by viruses Hantaan, Seoul, Puumala and Dobrava/Belgrade; and hantaviral pulmonary syndrome, induced by Sin Nombre et al. A case of HRFS, induced by hantavirus Dobrava, is described. Features of this case are developed neurological manifestations against the background of renal pathology, and difficulties of clinical and laboratory diagnostics in practice.

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and reversible splenial lesion syndrome.

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and reversible splenial lesion syndrome are both considered uncommon conditions relatively rare. Fever, hemorrhage, and acute kidney injury are the prevailing symptoms frequently observed in cases of HFRS. We describe a case of a middle-aged man who had been hospitalized with fever and acute neurological symptoms. His main symptom was recurrent dizziness. Cranial computed tomography (CT) did not reveal any obvious lesions, such as encephalorrhagia or infarctions. The splenium of corpus callosum showed hyperintensity on brain magnetic resonance imagi…

Correspondence: Guillain-Barré syndrome and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome.

Jiao and colleagues reported a case of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome who developed respiratory failure and symmetrical flaccid paralysis of all extremities. Electrophysiology revealed peripheral nerve injuries mainly in axons. They reached a diagnosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) associated with hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. Although the case is interesting, the diagnosis of GBS in such a patient should be with caution. Critical illness polyneuropathy (CIP) is an important and common differential diagnosis of GBS, especially in intensive care settings. Differentiating CIP …

Hemorrhagic Fever With Renal Syndrome in Vladivostok City, Russia.

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a public health problem in Vladivostok city, Russia. From 1997 to 2019, a study of hantaviruses in Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus), a natural reservoir of Seoul virus (SEOV), and in HFRS patients was conducted. We demonstrated the presence of SEOV in the local population of Norway rats and detected SEOV in 10, Amur virus (AMRV) in 4 and Hantaan virus (HTNV) in 1 out of 15 HFRS patients. Genetic analysis based on partial S, M and L segment sequences revealed that the Russian SEOV strains were related most closely to strains from Cambodia and Vietn…

[Nervous system involvement in hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome].

The authors of the article describe two cases of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) with prevalence of signs of nervous system involvement. The first case was a 40-year-old woman with moderate HFRS, who developed Guillain-Barre syndrome of axonal-demyelinating polyneuropathy. An important observation was the absence of hemorrhagic or renal syndrome; combined therapy including plasmapheresis was successful. The second case demonstrated polymorphism of HFRS clinical manifestations with prevalence of neurological symptoms, which consisted in encephalopathy and no renal failure signs; he…

Predictors of Severity in Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the risk factors for the severity of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and construct a nomogram model. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the data of 191 patients diagnosed with HFRS at the First Affiliated Hospital of Dali University between January 1, 2013, and September 30, 2024. Based on whether severe disease occurred, the patients were divided into a severe HFRS group (n=42) and a mild HFRS group (n=149). The clinical data of the two groups were compared, and after eliminating the influence of collinearity, LASSO-Logistic regression analy…

Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome: Pathogenesis and Clinical Picture.

Hantaan virus (HTNV) causes hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), which is a zoonosis endemic in eastern Asia, especially in China. The reservoir host of HTNV is field mouse (Apodemus agraricus). The main manifestation of HFRS, including acute kidney injury, increases vascular permeability, and coagulation abnormalities. In this paper, we review the current knowledge of the pathogenesis of HFRS including virus factor, immunity factor and host genetic factors. Furthermore, the treatment and prevention will be discussed.
