Hepatitis B antibodies in hospital personnel.

Sera from 544 hospital personnel members with different degrees of exposure to the agent of hepatitis B were tested for HB8Ag and anti-HB8 by counterelectrophoresis, radioimmunoassay and passive hemagglutination. The laboratory staff and persons having direct contact with patients exhibited a significantly higher prevalence of anti-HB8 (16.2%) as compared with the other groups: administrative staff (4.4%), healthy persons (4.6%) and blood donors (7.9%). These data prove the relationship between exposure to HB8Ag and anti-HB8 prevalence, more obvious in the laboratory staff handling human serum

Hepatitis B prophylaxis in hepatitis B-negative recipients transplanted with donor grafts positive for hepatitis B core antibodies.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Use of grafts from hepatitis B (HBV) core antibody (HBcAb(+)) individuals is a routine transplant practice. Herein, we have reported the results of 20 HBV-negative patients transplanted with a HBcAb-positive liver grafts in order to access the efficacy of HBV prophylaxis using immunoglobulin (IE) and antiviral drugs. METHODS: From January 2004 to December 2009, we performed 168 liver transplantations including 38 HBcAb-positive grafts (22.6%) in 18 cases of HBV-positive recipients and 20 HBV-negative recipients. Histological data obtained from these last 20 grafts during

Protective antibodies to hepatitis B virus in haemophiliacs.

Haemophilic patients are at increased risk from hepatitis B virus infection because of their need for blood product therapy. They are potentially poor responders to hepatitis B vaccine due to immunological abnormalities resulting from two causes: infection with the human immunodeficiency virus and treatment with clotting factor concentrates. The protective antibody response to hepatitis B virus in vaccinated haemophiliacs was investigated using a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay which employs a monoclonal antibody, RF-HBs-1, that recognises a virus-neutralising epitope on HBsAg. Detection of hepatitis B antibody by a single-antibody radioimmunoassay.

A radioimmunoassay (RIA) for the measurement of antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen (anti-HB-s) in human and non-human sera is described. The principle is based upon our earlier observation that anti-HB-s and hepatitis B surface antigen (HB-s-Ag) are soluble in 4.5% w/v polyethylene glycol 4000 but that anti-HB-s-HB-s-Ag complex is precipitated. The use of activated charcoal suspended in polyethylene glycol and dextran solution facilitated the separation of this complex by centrifugation, thus improving reproducibility and sensitivity. The test is approx. 3-5000 times as sensitive as count

[Investigation of antinuclear antibodies in chronic hepatitis B patients].

Antinuclear antibodies (ANA) facilitate the diagnosis and evaluation of patients in many systemic autoimmune conditions. Besides, ANA may also be detected in chronic infectious diseases. Although a number of investigations associated with autoantibody positivity in patients with chronic hepatitis C were reported, autoantibody positivity in patients with chronic hepatitis B remain rarely addressed in the literature. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antinuclear antibody (ANA), antimitocondrial antibody (AMA), anti-smooth muscle antibodies (ASMA) and anti-liver-kidney microsomal antigen

Hepatitis-B antibody in polymyalgia Rheumatica.

Thirteen patients with polymyalgia rheumatica (P.M.R.) were examined for evidence of viral infection. Hepatitis-B surface antibody (HBsAb) was detected in nine out of twelve patients tested prior to therapy. The antibody persisted up to six months in four patients but reverted to negative in the other five. HBsAb was found in only one of twelve age-matched controls. Hepatitis-B surface antigen was not detected in any patient or control. No significant elevation of antibody titre was detected to a panel of twelve other organisms. Immunoglobulin levels were elevated prior to treatment in several

Hepatitis and hepatitis B surface antigen and antibody in dentists.

Dentists were surveyed regarding a history of hepatitis and the presence in the blood of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and antibody (anti-HBs) to determine whether they were at high risk of exposure to hepatitis B virus. Of 288 Canadian dentists 5.2% gave a history of hepatitis after graduation. This proportion is similar to that for 1462 Ontario dentists (6.3%) and that for 3162 accountants (5.1%) who had previously completed a mailed questionnaire. One dentist (0.3%) was HBsAg-positive and 42 (14.6%) were anti-HBs-positive. Of 210 healthy volunteer blood donors matched for age, sex and

Hepatitis C virus antibodies in asymptomatic chronic carriers of hepatitis B surface antigen.

UNLABELLED: The objectives of the study were to evaluate the prevalence, incidence and clinical significance of antibodies to hepatitis C virus in HBsAg chronic carriers. The evaluation of stored sera was combined with the follow up of a cohort of cases observed in a referral-based university hospital. A total of 183 HBsAg asymptomatic chronic carriers were identified during routine screening and followed for a mean period of 3.8 years. Stored sera and sera obtained during follow-up were tested for anti-HCV using ELISA. Second-generation RIBA (Ortho) was used as a possible confirmatory test. D

Occult hepatitis B virus infection in HIV-infected Lebanese patients with isolated antibodies to hepatitis B core antigen.

The presence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) serological markers have been investigated in 101 Lebanese patients (69 men, 32 women; mean age 32.7 +/- 1.7 years) infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). Seven patients (6.9%) were HBsAg carriers compared with 54 patients (53.5%) who had no evidence of exposure to HBV infection. Twenty-four patients (23.8%) had anti-HBc alone as a serological marker compared with four patients who were positive for anti-HBs alone and 12 patients (11.9%) who were anti-HBc and anti-HBs-positive. Occult HBV infection (presence of HBV DNA in the absence

Reactivation of latently infected hepatitis B virus in a leukemia patient with antibodies to hepatitis B core antigen.

A 66-year-old man with chronic B-cell leukemia who had antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) but not hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) suffered from lethal hepatitis caused by hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation. He initially lacked circulating viral genomes in his sera and did not have a past history of liver dysfunction. In this patient, the immunosuppressive condition introduced by disease progression of leukemia induced reactivation of dormant HBV, and the withdrawal of chemotherapy resulted in fatal liver failure. Mutation-specific assay based on competitive polymerase chain

Blood donors infected with the hepatitis B virus but persistently lacking antibodies to the hepatitis B core antigen.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Antibodies to the core of hepatitis B virus (anti-HBc) are considered to be the best serologically reliable markers of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Through a national epidemiological survey, two young and first-time blood donors, originating from HBV-endemic areas, were identified as HBV carriers with an absence of anti-HBc reactivity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We followed up these two subjects in order to investigate the evolution of their HBV serological profiles. Nucleotide sequencing was performed of the entire pre-C/C region of the strains infecting these do

Viral envelope-specific antibodies in chronic hepatitis B virus infection.

While the cellular immune response associated with acute and chronic HBV infection has been thoroughly studied, the B cell response in chronic hepatitis B and the role of antibodies raised against the HBV envelope antigens in controlling and prevention of infection requires further investigation. The detection of anti-HBs antibodies is considered as one of the biomarkers for functional cure of chronic hepatitis B virus infection, as well as for protective immunity. Indeed, vaccine-induced neutralizing anti-HBs antibodies have been shown to protect against HBV challenge. Yet, the therapeutic po

Donors positive for hepatitis B core antibodies in nonliver transplantations.

We reviewed available, particularly epidemiological data regarding transplantation of organs from donors positive for hepatitis B core antibodies (HBcAb) to evaluate the possibility of transmitting the disease. For nonhepatic organs, the risk is low: higher for lung but lower for kidneys and heart, according to the quantity of lymphoid tissue. The use of such organs is increasing owing to the worldwide organ shortage. Unfortunately, even if the use of HBcAb-positive donors does not seem to affect patient or graft survival, the United Network for Organ Sharing and United States Renal Data Syste

Modelling long-term persistence of hepatitis B antibodies after vaccination.

Antibody response to hepatitis B vaccination was measured in 97 institutionalized, mentally handicapped patients after a 0-, 1-, 6-month vaccination schedule. Two groups were formed at month 7 according to the antibody response, which determined whether they needed an additional vaccine dose at month 12, to achieve an antibody titre of 100 IU/liter. All residents were followed up yearly for the first 5 years, after which, they received another booster dose. Another blood sample was taken 11 years after the start of the program. A linear mixed-regression model was used to analyze the data. Rand

Hepatitis B virus reactivation in patients treated with monoclonal antibodies.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation poses a significant clinical challenge, especially in patients undergoing immunosuppressive therapies, including monoclonal antibody treatments. This manuscript briefly explores the complex relationship between monoclonal antibody therapy and HBV reactivation, drawing upon current literature and clinical case studies. It delves into the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon, highlighting the importance of risk assessment, monitoring, and prophylactic measures for patients at risk. The manuscript aims to enhance the understanding of HBV reactivation in the c

[Antibodies against hepatitis B virus core antigen among blood donors].

The prevalence of antibodies to the hepatitis B virus (HBV) core antigen (anti-HBc) and the risk factors are evaluated in different blood donor groups. In 1998, on 12,456 first donations, 163 (1.31%) were positive with the two anti-HBc screening tests. Samples were from 69 women (42.3%) and 94 men (57.7%). Three subjects had no anti-HBs but were anti-HBc IgM negative. Forty (24.5%) donors were born in another country than France, and the majority (25 donors, 62.5%) were from North Africa. HBV vaccine had been previously given in 14 subjects (8.6%). Eight (4.9%) had hepatitis before the first d

The clinical significance of hepatitis B virus antigens and antibodies.

There are two well-characterized antigen-antibody systems which relate specificially to viral hepatitis B. Tests for HBsAg and anti-HBs are readily available and of great benefit to the diagnosis, prevention and understanding of hepatitis B. Tests for HBcAg and anti-HBc are still research techniques which requires further development before they can be used at the level of everyday medical practice. HBsAg in an individual indicates that he harbors the virus of hepatitis B; it may be present in the absence of liver disease or be found in association with both acute and chronic type B hepatitis.

Characteristics of hepatitis B core antibody level in the natural history of chronic hepatitis B.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to analyze serum antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) level during different immunological phases in the natural history of patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). METHODS: Serum anti-HBc levels in the immune tolerant (IT), immune clearance (IC), low replicative (LR), and HBeAg negative hepatitis (ENH) phases from 634 treatment-naïve CHB patients were measured and compared between phases and with other serum markers. RESULTS: Median serum anti-HBc levels were different between the phases of CHB. Serum anti-HBc level was highest in the ENH phase and lowest in t

Duration of hepatitis B antibody response in children immunised with hepatitis B and compulsory vaccines.

Twenty four subjects were simultaneously administered DT toxoids, OPV and HBV vaccines at the age of 3, 4-5 and 11 months and then followed up for 2 and 4 years in order to evaluate the duration of the immune response and the need and the timing of HBV revaccination. A fall in anti-HBs titre below 10 mIU/ml was observed at the follow up in 4/24 (16.7%) of the subjects. In other 5 children (20.8%) anti-HBs titre was found to be just above 10 mIU/ml. This would suggest that a revaccination is indicated and it could be performed at the age of 5-6 years when children enter school. This schedule is
