The high rate of infection with hepatitis B virus in certain defined populations in industralized countries and among the general population in many non-industrialized countries stresses the need for hepatitis B vaccines. Hepatitis B, one of at least six different forms of viral hepatitis, may progress to chronic liver disease, including chronic persistent hepatitis, chronic active hepatitis, cirrhosis and primary liver cancer. Primary liver cancer is one of the ten most common cancers in the world today. Immunization against hepatitis B is required therefore for groups at high risk of infecti

Currently available hepatitis B vaccines are immunogenic, efficacious and safe. There is no doubt that their consistent use makes the elimination of hepatitis B in most countries possible. Nevertheless, there are still aspects of these vaccines which could be improved: three doses are needed for a full course of vaccination (which is sometimes difficult to achieve because of poor compliance or difficult logistic situations in some regions), there is a comparably high rate of non-responders to the vaccine (about 5% in adults) and, finally, it is not impossible that there are strains of HBV show

Since the hepatitis B vaccine are on the market in France, until the end of 2002, 1211 observations of demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (1109 cases of which 895 multiple sclerosis) or peripheral (102 cases of which 49 Guillain Barre Syndrome), have been reported to the french network of pharmacovigilance and to the AFSSAPS. It is not possible to singularize these observations, neither from a clinical nor an epidemiological point of view. No risk factor has been detected. Only the chronology could suggest a causal relationship, the vaccine preceding the pathology in all the c

Hepatitis A is a beginning disease in childhood but sometimes a very dangerous disease in adults. It is necessary to vaccine the non immune "risk groups". Hepatitis B is responsible for two millions deafs every year. Hepatitis B is a sexually transmissible disease. Everybody would be vaccinated.

Hepatitis B (HB) vaccine has been included in the national immunization programmes of more than 90 countries world-wide. Its combination with DTP (diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis) and other childhood vaccines will lower administration costs, simplify vaccine administration and improve the logistics of vaccine delivery. It is believed that the combined vaccines will increase acceptance and vaccine coverage. The immunogenicity and reactogenicity of the various components should not differ when given separately or together. The combined vaccines DTP + HB, DT + HB, HA + HB, HB + Hib have already been

Hepatitis A and hepatitis B are viral infections of the liver. Hepatitis A is spread by the fecal-oral route--i.e., by ingestion of virus shed in the stool of acutely infected individuals. The virus is transmitted from person to person or (in outbreaks) via contaminated food or water. Population groups at increased risk of acquiring hepatitis A include children and staff in day care centers. Hepatitis B is spread by blood and other body fluids from acutely infected individuals or chronically infected carriers. Infection occurs when virus contained in these fluids enters the body through mucosa

Hepatitis B surface antigen in the form of 22 nm spherical particles (and tubular forms) is excess virus coat protein. Guidelines for the preparation of the 22 nm spherical particles (and their separated polypeptides) derived from the plasma of asymptomatic human carriers, were suggested by the WHO Expert Committee on Viral Hepatitis in 1977, and the proposed requirements for the 22 nm hepatitis B particle vaccine were published by the WHO Expert Committee on Biological Standardisation in 1981 and revised in 1983. Such preparations have been tested for safety and protective efficacy and many c

Both hepatitis B and hepatitis C viruses (HBV and HCV) cause chronic infections worldwide that are associated with development of liver diseases ranging from mild liver inflammation to hepatocellular carcinomas. While efficient preventive vaccines are available for HBV, efforts are ongoing to develop one in case of HCV. Yet, both infections share the fact that therapeutic agents available to treat already established infections are yet poorly efficient, toxic or associated with development of resistance. Thus, novel immune-based therapies are actively being developed to complement or replace s

Viral hepatitis is second to gonorrhea as the most commonly reported infectious disease in the US. Hepatitis B accounts for the majority of viral hepatitis cases. Fortunately, the disease is self-limiting and frequently resolves completely with minimal complications; however, a significant number of individuals may experience long-term sequelae. Research utilizing genetic engineering has led to the development of yeast-derived recombinant DNA (YDR) hepatitis vaccines--a significant advancement in the control and prevention of hepatitis B. The recombinant process allows production of unlimited

The first experimental vaccinations against hepatitis B virus (HBV) were performed in 1970, even before the nature of the administered "Australia antigen" was known. Soon, it was realized that this antigen was the envelope protein (HBV surface antigen, HBsAg), and it was purified from HBV-containing human plasma. Later, it was produced in genetically engineered yeast cells. The excellent efficacy of the HBsAg vaccine was confirmed in numerous studies, particularly in newborns from HBV-infected mothers who almost always become chronic HBV carriers without vaccination. But the vaccine is also hi

Hepatitis B virus is a worldwide leading cause of acute and chronic liver disease including cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Effective vaccines have been available since the early '80s and vaccination has proved highly successful in reducing the disease burden, the development of the carrier state and the HB-related morbidity and mortality in the countries where vaccination has been implemented. Neutralizing (protective) antibodies (anti-HBs) induced by vaccination are targeted largely towards the amino acid hydrophilic region, referred to as the common a determinant which is present

Twenty four subjects were simultaneously administered DT toxoids, OPV and HBV vaccines at the age of 3, 4-5 and 11 months and then followed up for 2 and 4 years in order to evaluate the duration of the immune response and the need and the timing of HBV revaccination. A fall in anti-HBs titre below 10 mIU/ml was observed at the follow up in 4/24 (16.7%) of the subjects. In other 5 children (20.8%) anti-HBs titre was found to be just above 10 mIU/ml. This would suggest that a revaccination is indicated and it could be performed at the age of 5-6 years when children enter school. This schedule is

Hepatitis B causes liver failure, cirrhosis and cancer. It has an estimated global prevalence of 6%, and 700,000 to 1 million persons die every year of hepatitis B-related causes. In 1989, hepatitis B incidence in Cuba was 14.9 per 100,000 population. To control infection, the Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Center and the Ministry of Public Health, both in Havana, collaborated on a joint project that first produced natural interferon and recombinant interferon alpha-2b, and later a polyethylene glycolconjugated interferon. As part of the Cuban biotechnology development strategy, the pro

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections accounts for an important global health problem affecting over 250 million people all around the world. They can cause acute, transient and chronic infections in the human liver. Chronic infection of liver can lead to its failure or cancer. To deal with this problem, alternative approaches or strategies to inhibit these infections have already been started. DNA and mRNA-based vaccination will increase the efficacy and reduce toxicity in patients with Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections. Gene vaccines repr

In most developing countries, hepatitis prevention has to be carried out early in life and on a mass scale. In such countries, mobile immunization teams have a limited number of sessions to devote to each rural community ans simultaneous administration of multiple antigens is normal practice. We have, therefore, compared the immune response to yellow fever and hepatitis B vaccines when injected simultaneously or not to Senegalese children. Injections were done at time of booster injections for hepatitis B vaccine. Yellow fever antibodies were detected in a similar proportion in infants immuniz

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is highly contagious, primarily infected through mucous membranes or broken skin exposed to infected body fluids. Conventional injectable vaccines, which require cold chain storage and trained personnel, elicit systemic immunity but fail to establish effective immune protection at mucosal sites where HBV enters. Mucosal vaccines administered orally or intranasally can induce both mucosal and systemic immune responses, offering enhanced protection along with advantages such as ease of administration, no need for cold chain, and reduced reliance on healthcare workers.
