The hepatopancreas of the lobster has recently been found to be a rich source of material from which to isolate arthopod gap junctions biochemically (Finbow et al., 1983a; 1984). It has therefore been studied here to assess the features of these intercellular junctions and any others that may be present, in vivo. The tissue consists of columnar epithelial cells which possess apical microvilli and basal infoldings. In thin sections the lateral borders of these cells are characterized by desmosomes and smooth septate junctions as well as by gap junctions. The desmosomes exhibit no apparent freez

Ink production and release is one of the most important defense strategies in cephalopods. Previous studies have shown that ink production and release are closely associated with the hepatopancreas. In octopuses, the ink sac is embedded within the hepatopancreas, and the surrounding hepatopancreatic tissue appears white. To explore the differences between the white hepatopancreas and normal hepatopancreas, as well as the potential function of the white hepatopancreas, this study took Amphioctopus fangsiao as the research object and conducted histological and transcriptomic studies on white hep

Pyraclostrobin (PYR), a strobilurin fungicide, has been widely used to control fungal diseases, posing potential risk to aquatic organisms. However, the toxic effects of PYR to fish remained largely unknown. In this study, common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) was exposed to environmentally relevant levels of PYR (0, 0.5 and 5.0 μg/L) for 30 days to assess its chronic toxicity and potential toxicity mechanism. The results showed that long-term exposure to PYR induced hepatopancreas damage as evident by increased in serum transaminase activities (AST and ALT). Moreover, PYR exposure remarkably enhan

The only recognised member of the Nimaviridae is white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), which causes billions in annual losses in the shrimp industry; this virus belongs to the Whispovirus genus. Many manuscripts are published each year that highlight the importance of understanding and controlling this virus, as well as attempting to figure out its origin. The evolutionary history of this economically important pathogen has been particularly difficult to unravel. Recently, several endogenous and exogenous nimaviruses have been discovered from decapod crustaceans, allowing insight into their geneti

Lectins are versatile proteins that specifically recognize and interact with sugar moieties expressed on the cell surface. The potential of lectin in drug targeting and delivery has instigated interest to identify natural lectins. Crabs have been identified as a rich source of lectin because the innate immune system is activated on encounter of pathogens and helps in the production of lectin. Although the presence of lectins in crab's hemolymph is well documented, little information about lectin in hepatopancreas, a vital organ for immunity and digestion in crustaceans, is currently available.

Dietary ingestion is the main route of exposure to hazardous contaminants in land animals. Cadmium, a high-profile toxic metal, affects living systems at different organismal levels, including major storage organs (liver, kidneys), key organs for species survival (gonads), and epigenetic networks regulating gene expression. 5-methylcytosine (5mC) is the most common and best-characterized epigenetic mark among different modified nucleosides in DNA. This important player in methylation-driven gene expression is impacted by cadmium in sentinel terrestrial vertebrates. However, limited information

Ovarian lipids are essential nutrients that fundamentally determine oocyte and offspring quality, and ultimately affect the reproductive performance of decapod crustaceans. Lipids accumulated in the ovaries during vitellogenesis are mainly derived from the hepatopancreas. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying lipid metabolism in the hepatopancreas and ovaries during vitellogenesis remain largely unclear. In this study, comparative transcriptomic and lipidomic analyses were conducted on the hepatopancreas and ovaries of the mud crab Scylla paramamosain. From early to late vitellogenic st

Various crustaceans are farmed using aquaculture, and food deprivation or fasting can occur due to changing of environmental or management strategies. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying responses to starvation in crustaceans remain unclear. To address this, 12 hepatopancreas transcriptomes were compared for oriental river prawn (Macrobrachium nipponense) from four fasting stages (0, 7, 14 and 21 d). Gene Ontology functional annotation and Kyoto Encyclopaedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment analysis of differentially expressed genes were subsequently performed. During the earl

Every day new extraordinary properties of nanoparticles (a billionth of a meter) are discovered and worldwide millions are invested into nanotechnology and nanomaterials. Risks to marine organisms are still not fully understood and biomarkers to detect health effects are not implemented, yet. We used the filter feeding blue mussel as a model to analyse uptake and effects of nanoparticles from glass wool, a new absorbent material suggested for use in floating oil spill barriers. In both, gills and hepatopancreas we analysed uptake of nanomaterials by transmission electronmicroscopy (TEM) in uns

The Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis), an economically important crustacean that is endemic to China, has recently experienced high-temperature stress. The high thermal tolerance of E. sinensis points to its promise in being highly productive in an aquacultural context. However, the mechanisms underlying its high thermal tolerance remain unknown. In this study, female E. sinensis that were heat exposed for 24 h at 38.5 °C and 33 °C were identified as high-temperature-stressed (HS) and normal-temperature-stressed (NS) groups, respectively. The hepatopancreas of E. sinensis from the HS an

Alexandrium pacificum is a toxic species among red tide-forming organisms. Red tide outbreaks can cause seawater hypoxia and discoloration, which impair shrimp feeding and may facilitate toxin accumulation. Exposure to A. pacificum has been linked to oxidative stress and immune disruption in Litopenaeus vannamei, highlighting the need to understand the pathogenic mechanisms involved. To investigate the immune response induced in L. vannamei upon exposure to A. pacificum. Healthy shrimp (2.5 ± 0.5 g) were immersed in A. pacificum lysate (1.0 × 104 cells·mL-1) or natural seawater (control). The

BACKGROUND: The mudflat crab Helice tientsinensis is one of the most commercially valuable species for crabmeat production due to its delicious taste. These crabs are mainly found in coastal wetland where they are seriously threatened by toxic heavy metal pollution. In crustaceans, the hepatopancreas is an important organ for detoxification, and metal toxic substances can be converted to non-toxic or less toxic compounds in this organ.
OBJECTIVE: To develop a better understanding of the molecular response of H. tientsinensis to the toxic metal cadmium (Cd) and provide a molecular basis for th

The highest concentrations of phospholipid, neutral lipid and fatty acids were observed in the R cells and connective tissue of the hepatopancreas of Scylla serrata. The basal parts of the B cells and apical parts of the cells lining the main duct also showed moderate presence of these substances. The E cells however, except at their cell membranes were found to be devoid of lipids. F cells on the other hand exhibited lipoid complexes. Considerable reduction in the staining intensity of fatty acids were noticed 4 h after the bilateral ablation of eyestalks, neutral lipid undergo depletion 24 h

Ocean acidification has emerged as a globally recognized environmental issue, posing a serious threat to marine ecosystems. To elucidate the adaptive mechanisms of Marsupenaeus japonicus under acidified conditions, both biochemical and transcriptomic analyses were performed following low-pH exposure. Biochemical assays revealed that low pH stress significantly SOD and CAT activities while markedly elevating MDA levels, indicating oxidative damage. T-AOC exhibited a transient rise followed by a sharp decline at later stages, suggesting initial activation and subsequent exhaustion of antioxidant

Crayfish plague disease, caused by the oomycete pathogen Aphanomyces astaci represents one of the greatest risks for the biodiversity of the freshwater crayfish. This data article covers the de novo transcriptome assembly and annotation data of the noble crayfish and the marbled crayfish challenged with Ap. astaci. Following the controlled infection experiment (Francesconi et al. in Front Ecol Evol, 2021, https://doi.org/10.3389/fevo.2021.647037 ), we conducted a differential gene expression analysis described in (Boštjančić et al. in BMC Genom, 2022, https://doi.org/10.1186/s12864-022-08571-z

The hepatopancreas is the key organ involved in energy storage, immune response, and metabolism during crustacean molting, yet the underlying molecular mechanisms in the hepatopancreas that regulate molting remain unknown. In the present study, we conducted a comprehensive proteomic analysis in the hepatopancreas and quantified 1527 proteins, of which 193 changed significantly in abundance among three molting stages (pre-molt: PrM, post-molt: PoM, and inter-molt: InM) of Scylla paramamosain using iTRAQ-coupled LC-MS/MS. Crustacean cardioactive peptide (CCAP), a cyclic amidated non-apeptide, is widely found in arthropods. The functions of CCAP have been revealed to include regulation of heart rate, intestinal peristalsis, molting, and osmotic pressure. However, to date, there has not been any report on the possible involvement of CCAP in immunoregulation in crustaceans. In this study, a CCAP precursor (designated as Sp-CCAP) was identified in the commercially important mud crab Scylla paramamosain, which could be processed into four CCAP-associated peptides and one mature peptide (PFCNAFTGC-NH2). Bioinformatic

High temperatures in summer often trigger disease outbreaks in shrimp, resulting in significant economic losses. To investigate the heat tolerance mechanisms of Penaeus monodon, juvenile tiger shrimp were subjected to a high-temperature stress of 38 °C for 144 h. The cumulative survival rate of shrimp sharply decreased to 5.29% in the later 144 h. The heat-sensitive shrimps (S group) were collected in the first 24 h, while those that survived beyond 120 h were collected as the heat-tolerant group (T group). The hepatopancreas of two groups was subjected to transcriptomic and metabolomic analys

BACKGROUND: Cathepsin D is a lysosomal enzyme that is found in all organisms acting in protein turnover, in humans it is present in some types of carcinomas, and it has a high activity in Parkinson's disease and a low activity in Alzheimer disease. In marine organisms, most of the research has been limited to corroborate the presence of this enzyme. It is known that cathepsin D of some marine organisms has a low thermostability and that it has the ability to have activity at very acidic pH. Cathepsin D of the Jumbo squid (Dosidicus gigas) hepatopancreas was purified and partially characterized
