The first generation of species-selective phenoxy herbicides went into use at the same time as modern antibiotics, chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides and new fungicides and rodenticides. No resistance has appeared to the still widely used phenoxy herbicides. However, resistance has developed, in many isolated areas around the world, to s-triazine herbicides and, in a few small areas, to bipyridillium herbicides. The parameters of population genetics that govern herbicide resistance and those that govern resistance of microorganisms and fungi to other xenobiotics are the same: generations, se

A greater number of, and more varied, modes of resistance have evolved in weeds than in other pests because the usage of herbicides is far more extensive than the usage of other pesticides, and because weed seed output is so great. The discovery and development of selective herbicides are more problematic than those of insecticides and fungicides, as these must only differentiate between plant and insect or pathogen. Herbicides are typically selective between plants, meaning that before deployment there are already some crops possessing natural herbicide resistance that weeds could evolve. The

While previous reviews have largely focused on individual crops or single target-site mechanisms, the full-chain comparative landscape across major cereal crops remains unexplored. Here, we fill this critical gap by providing the first systematic, cross-crop comparative review that spans herbicide targets, resistance mechanisms, and breeding applications across four major cereals-rice, maize, wheat, and sorghum. Weed infestation is a serious constraint on crop production. Chemical weed control faces challenges such as herbicide resistance evolution and ecological risks. Developing herbicide-re

BACKGROUND: The pre-emergence dinitroaniline herbicides (such as trifluralin and pendimethalin) are vital to Australian no-till farming systems. A Lolium rigidum population collected from the Western Australian grain belt with a 12-year trifluralin use history was characterised for resistance to dinitroaniline, acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACCase)- and acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides. Target-site resistance mechanisms were investigated.
RESULTS: This L. rigidum population exhibited 32-fold resistance to trifluralin, as compared with the susceptible population. It also displayed 1

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, a ubiquitous environmental bacterium, is an important cause of nosocomial infections. Although banned in some countries, paraquat (PQ) is commonly used to control weeds. In this study, we investigated the effects of increasing concentrations of PQ on S. maltophilia and its antimicrobial resistance. The sequential exposure of S. maltophilia K279a to increasing concentrations of PQ induces the formation of strains with increased resistance to PQ. Among the 400 PQ-resistant isolates tested, 70 clones were resistant to 16 μg/ml ciprofloxacin (CIP), and around 18% of t

BACKGROUND: Spatially targeted spraying is an alternative to broadcast herbicide application that reduces herbicide use by restricting treatment to areas where weeds are detected. However, weed detection using remote or proximal sensing and classification algorithms is imperfect, which may allow weeds to escape treatment. This study examined the evolutionary consequences of spatially targeted spraying and evaluated whether applying herbicide to spray-buffer zones surrounding detected weeds could compensate for reduced detection accuracy. We tested two hypotheses: first, that spray-buffer zones

Herbicide resistance is rapidly emerging in Cyperus difformis in rice fields across China. The response of a C. difformis population GX-35 was tested against five acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides, auxin herbicide MCPA and photosynthesis II (PSII)-inhibitor bentazone. Population GX-35 evolved multiple resistance to ALS-inhibiting herbicides (penoxsulam, bispyribac‑sodium, pyrazosulfuron-ethyl, halosulfuron-methly and imazapic) and auxin herbicide MCPA, with resistance levels of 140-, 1253-, 578-, 18-, 13-, and 21-fold, respectively, compared to the susceptible population. Glyphosate (GS) specifically inhibits the 5-enolpyruvyl-shikimate-3-phosphate (EPSP) synthase that converts phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) and shikimate-3-phosphate to EPSP in the shikimate pathway of bacteria and other organisms. The inhibition of the EPSP synthase depletes the cell of the EPSP-derived aromatic amino acids as well as of folate and quinones. A variety of mechanisms (e.g., EPSP synthase modification) has been described that confer GS resistance to bacteria. Here, we show that the Burkholderia anthina strain DSM 16086 quickly evolves GS resistance by the acquisition of mutations in t

Decades of intensive herbicide use in perennial cropping systems have imposed substantial environmental pressures and accelerated the evolution of herbicide-resistant weed populations. In Andalusia (southern Spain), citrus and olive orchards rely heavily on glyphosate and other herbicide modes of action, resulting in chronic ecosystem exposure, declining herbicide efficacy, and increasing chemical inputs. We surveyed ten dominant weed species across eleven orchards to characterize resistance patterns and investigate underlying physiological mechanisms relevant to environmental persistence and

Cytochrome P450-dependent enzymes from wheat catalyze the oxidation of endogenous compounds (lauric and oleic acids) and of several herbicides (diclofop, chlortoluron, bentazon). Treatment of wheat seedlings with the safener, naphthalic anhydride and with phenobarbital increases dramatically several P450-dependent enzyme activities including diclofop and lauric acid hydroxylation. The parallel induction of lauric acid (omega-1)-hydroxylase and diclofop hydroxylase activities suggests that both compounds proceeds from the same or very similar forms of P450. To test whether either one or multipl

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) is the most widely cultivated forage crop worldwide, owing to its high protein content, balanced amino acid profile, and abundance of vitamins and minerals. However, weed infestation severely threatens alfalfa yield and quality. The lack of herbicide‑resistant cultivars, combined with the diversity of weed species, has made herbicide tolerance a key breeding objective. To address this challenge, we developed a highly optimized prime editing system and, for the first time, achieved prime editing in alfalfa by enhancing the expression efficiency of its components. Barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli) is a problematic weed in rice production, and resistance to multiple herbicides threatens sustainable management. The resistant (R) population JZWD lacks ALS target-site mutations for penoxsulam, indicating metabolic resistance. Whole-plant assays revealed that JZWD exhibited moderate resistance to penoxsulam, glufosinate ammonium and haloxyfop-P, and low resistance to quinclorac, glyphosate and halauxifen-methyl, while it was susceptible to quizalofop-p-ethyl. The synergistic effects of malathion confirmed the involvement of P450 in penoxsulam resistance

Herbicide resistance challenges sustainable weed management in crop fields. However, the lack of gene manipulation tools for weeds hinders studies of herbicide resistance evolution and regulation. Here, we identified that tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) can systemically infect Galium aparine, a noxious broadleaf weed common in wheat and rapeseed fields, among 13 broadleaf weeds. The TMV-based expression system can be used to elucidate herbicide resistance in G. aparine. We demonstrated that virus-based expression of BAR, ALS, and its site-directed mutagenized form in G. aparine plants can impart he

The widespread application of glyphosate has resulted in the evolution of glyphosate resistance in Lolium rigidum. This study investigated the resistance mechanism in an Australian population of L. rigidum, designated WALR60. Transcriptome sequencing coupled with quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) analyses identified significant upregulation of ABCC3.2, ABCB11, and ABCC13 in the WALR60 population compared to susceptible controls. Structural analysis revealed that LrABCC3.2 lacks the N-terminal TMD0 domain present in its homolog LrABCC3.1, representing a core ABC transporter. LrABCC3.2-transf

Paddy field farming remains the dominant form of growing rice in modern times as the rice is the staple food for over half the world's population and is closely associated with food security and political stability of many countries. Record increase in rice production have been observed since the start of the Green Revolution. India is one of the largest paddy producer and exporter in the world. However, constant use of chemical herbicide like paraquat had shown adverse impact on the rice yield. Non-target organisms of the habitat including cyanobacterial paddy biofertilizer face the herbicide

The evolution of resistance to herbicides is a classic example of rapid contemporary adaptation in the face of a novel environmental stress. Evolutionary theory predicts that selection for resistance will be accompanied by fitness trade-offs in environments where the stress is absent. Alopecurus myosuroides, an autumn-germinating grass weed of cereal crops in North-West Europe, has evolved resistance to seven herbicide modes-of-action, making this an ideal species to examine the presence and magnitudes of such fitness costs. Here, we use two contrasting A. myosuroides phenotypes derived from a

The widespread application of herbicides has profound ecological consequences, particularly regarding the distribution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and microbial communities. In this study, we analyzed herbicide-related metagenomic data to assess the impact of herbicide exposure on ARGs and microbial populations. Our results demonstrate that herbicide application significantly increased the abundance of ARGs, particularly those associated with multidrug resistance, sulfonamides, and bacitracin, with notable increases in subtypes such as bacA and sul1. Microbial community analyses reve

BACKGROUND: Peanut (Arachis hypogaea) is an important cash crop with high oil yield per unit area; it is considered an excellent source for producing premium edible oil and a variety of processed foods. Weed infestation poses a critical challenge to peanut cultivation. Although the acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicide imazethapyr is extensively applied for weed control in peanut fields, it also causes significant phytotoxicity to the crop. The development of herbicide-resistant varieties through gene editing represents a promising sustainable solution; however, the identification o
