Herbivory Weakens the Stability of a Floral Polymorphism.

AbstractHerbivores have profound impacts on the maintenance of plant diversity. While simple optimal foraging models predict that herbivores should selectively attack common plant phenotypes, models that allow for differential plant resource acquisition can predict a preference for rarer phenotypes, leading to the destabilization of intraspecific polymorphism. We show that herbivores may play such a destabilizing role in the dimorphic Hesperis matronalis system by weakening negative frequency dependence. Across 40 patches of varying morph ratios, locally rarer H. matronalis morphs grew larger

Cooperative herbivory between two important pests of rice.

Normally, when different species of herbivorous arthropods feed on the same plant this leads to fitness-reducing competition. We found this to be different for two of Asia's most destructive rice pests, the brown planthopper and the rice striped stem borer. Both insects directly and indirectly benefit from jointly attacking the same host plant. Double infestation improved host plant quality, particularly for the stemborer because the planthopper fully suppresses caterpillar-induced production of proteinase inhibitors. It also reduced the risk of egg parasitism, due to diminished parasitoid att

Predators can facilitate herbivory in nutrient-limited marine ecosystems.

Predators influence ecosystem functioning through consumptive and non-consumptive effects. Recent studies suggest that predators can also be an essential source of limiting nutrients in ecosystems such as coral reefs, potentially influencing prey ecology through nutrient input via their excreta. With rising commercial fishery, mesopredatory fishes are being selectively harvested from reefs. Yet, there is incomplete knowledge of the consequences of this extraction on essential ecosystem processes. Using field experiments and observations, we examined how mesopredatory fishes influence herbivory

Long-term burning interacts with herbivory to slow decomposition.

Fires can generate spatial variation in trophic interactions such as insect herbivory. If trophic interactions mediated by fire influence nutrient cycling, they could feed back on the more immediate consequences of fire on nutrient dynamics. Here we consider herbivore-induced effects on oak litter quality and decomposition within a long-term manipulation of fire frequency in central Minnesota, USA. We focused on bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa) trees, which are common across the fire frequency gradient and are often heavily infested with either lace bugs (Corythuca arcuata) or aphids (Hoplochaithr

Separating ontogenetic and environmental determination of resistance to herbivory in cottonwood.

We used narrowleaf cottonwood, Populus angustifolia, and the gall-forming aphid, Pemphigus betae, to determine the extent to which ontogenetic variation in resistance to herbivory is due to endogenous, stable genetic influences. In a three-year common garden trial using ramets propagated from the top, middle, and bottom of mature trees, we found that the resistance of trees to aphids was significantly higher in top vs. bottom source ramets, supporting the hypothesis of a stable, genetically programmed component to aphid resistance. The magnitude of ontogenetically based variation in resistance

The potential anti-herbivory role of microorganisms on plant thorns.

Thorns, spines and prickles are some of the anti-herbivore defenses that plants have evolved. They were recently found to be commonly aposematic (warning coloration). However, the physical anti-herbivore defense executed by these sharp structures seems to be only the tip of the iceberg. We show that thorns of various plant species commonly harbor an array of aerobic and anaerobic pathogenic bacteria including Clostridium perfringens the causative agent of the life-threatening gas gangrene, Bacillus anthracis, and Pantoea agglomerans. Septic inflammation caused by plant thorn injury can result

Evolutionary novelty shapes predator-mediated insect herbivory in exotic oaks.

Phylogenetic distance between exotic and native plant species is a well documented predictor of insect herbivory, but whether it also influences predator-mediated (top-down) control remains unresolved. In this study, we manipulated predator access on 18 exotic oak (Quercus) species grown in a common garden, spanning a gradient of phylogenetic distance to four european oaks (Q. robur, Q. petraea, Q. suber, or Q. pyrenaica). We excluded three predator guild treatments: ground-dwelling arthropod predators (hereafter ant exclusion, because the sticky-barrier method used primarily excludes ants), v

Herbivory-induced volatiles elicit defence genes in lima bean leaves.

In response to herbivore damage, several plant species emit volatiles that attract natural predators of the attacking herbivores. Using spider mites (Tetranychus urticae) and predatory mites (Phytoseiulus persimilis), it has been shown that not only the attacked plant but also neighbouring plants are affected, becoming more attractive to predatory mites and less susceptible to spider mites. The mechanism involved in such interactions, however, remains elusive. Here we show that uninfested lima bean leaves activate five separate defence genes when exposed to volatiles from conspecific leaves in

Diversity and abundance of phyllosphere bacteria are linked to insect herbivory.

Simultaneous or sequential attack by herbivores and microbes is common in plants. Many seed plants exhibit a defence trade-off against chewing herbivorous insects and leaf-colonizing ('phyllosphere') bacteria, which arises from cross-talk between the phytohormones jasmonic acid (JA, induced by many herbivores) and salicylic acid (SA, induced by many bacteria). This cross-talk may promote reciprocal susceptibility in plants between phyllosphere bacteria and insect herbivores. In a population of native bittercress (Cardamine cordifolia, Brassicaceae), we tested whether simulating prior damage wi

Herbivory leaves a soil-borne defensive legacy that recruits parasitoids.

How organisms convert short-term stress into long-term defense is a key ecological question. Classic herbivore-induced plant volatiles recruit natural enemies but act briefly only in damaged tissues. Here, we report that leaf herbivory establishes a persistent soil defensive legacy to help uninfested subsequent plants attract parasitoids. During the conditioning phase, herbivory systemically activates jasmonate signaling, which reprograms root metabolism and promotes the exudation of specific flavonoids, notably daidzein and genistein. These compounds selectively restructure the rhizosphere mi

Herbivory-Induced Stomatal Opening Triggers the Dispersal of an Invasive Insect Herbivore.

Stomata play important roles in plant responses to phytopathogens, but less is known about their roles in plant-herbivore interactions. Herbivore damage commonly closes stomata but also elicits the release of herbivory-induced plant volatiles, important mediators of plant-herbivore interactions. Here, we examined the responses in tomato plants attacked by the invasive tomato leafminer (Phthorimaea absoluta), the larvae of which performed better on infested plants, while ovipositing adults were repelled by larvae-infested plants, which were distinct from those induced by two other tomato pests,

Jasmonic acid enhances plant cyanogenesis and resistance to herbivory in lima bean.

Jasmonic acid (JA) is a natural plant hormone ubiquitously distributed in plants and centrally involved in the induction of direct and indirect plant defenses. Defenses up-regulated by this hormone include trichomes--a direct, mechanical defense--and alkaloids--a direct chemical defense--as well as two indirect chemical defenses: volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and extrafloral nectar (EFN). Plant cyanogenesis--the release of toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) from preformed cyanogenic precursors in fruits, leaves, and seeds of many plants--is recognized as a direct, constitutive plant defensive tr

Embolism does not spread outwards from simulated herbivory damage sites in leaves.

Embolism is known to occur in leaf venation networks as the leaf dries out. This process is associated with reduced leaf hydraulic conductance that can impact transpiration and photosynthesis. We hypothesize that herbivory or other leaf mechanical damage could introduce additional air into the leaf, leading to further venation-mediated embolism spread during drought. Using the optical vulnerability method, we compared embolism spatial spread rates after either midrib or lamina damage in two species of contrasting venation architecture (pinnate vs. palmate). We then tested the hypothesis that e

Herbivory disrupts invasion-associated phyllosphere and arthropod community shifts in grasslands.

Biological invasions and changing herbivore communities can jointly reshape grassland ecosystems by altering vegetation structure, microclimate, microbial communities, and trophic interactions. We examined these effects in temperate Australian grassy woodlands dominated by kangaroo grass (Themeda triandra) and invaded by African lovegrass (Eragrostis curvula). Across six livestock-grazed farms, we established nested herbivore-exclusion treatments (open, livestock excluded, and all mammals excluded) in paired subsites dominated by kangaroo grass or co-dominated by African lovegrass. We measured

Unprecedented Warming and Increased Herbivory Drive Collapse of Japan's Kelp Forests.

Kelp forests underpin entire ecosystems and provide key services for human society, yet are threatened by anthropogenic stressors, most notably ocean warming and overgrazing. While Japanese kelp forests have substantial historical and cultural value, responses to recent environmental change remain poorly resolved. Here, we assessed how recent Kuroshio-associated warming and increased herbivory were linked to kelp forest collapse across approximately 200 km of the Izu Peninsula (central-eastern Japan). We combined 40 years of in situ kelp biomass (1980-2024) and 12-14 years of canopy-cover reco

Signal signature of aboveground-induced resistance upon belowground herbivory in maize.

Plants activate local and systemic defence mechanisms upon exposure to stress. This innate immune response is partially regulated by plant hormones, and involves the accumulation of defensive metabolites. Although local defence reactions to herbivores are well studied, less is known about the impact of root herbivory on shoot defence. Here, we examined the effects of belowground infestation by the western corn rootworm Diabrotica virgifera virgifera on aboveground resistance in maize. Belowground herbivory by D. v. virgifera induced aboveground resistance against the generalist herbivore Spodo

Transgenerational Herbivory Effects on Performance of Clonal Offspring of the Invasive Plant Alternanthera philoxeroides.

Interactions between alien plants and local enemies in introduced ranges may determine plant invasion success. However, little is known about whether herbivory-induced responses are transmitted across vegetative generations of plants and whether epigenetic changes are involved during this process. In a greenhouse experiment, we examined the effects of herbivory by the generalist herbivore Spodoptera litura on the growth, physiology, biomass allocation and DNA methylation level of the invasive plant Alternanthera philoxeroides in the first- (G1), second- (G2) and third-generation (G3). Phenylalanine Ammonia-Lyase as a Key Enzyme in Tea Plant Resistance to Herbivory.

The tea plant (Camellia sinensis) employs inducible chemical defenses against insect herbivores, yet the role of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) in this process remains inadequately characterized. This study demonstrates that PAL is essential for tea plant's direct resistance against the tea geometrid (Ectropis grisescens Warren). Inhibition of PAL activity using 2-Aminoindan-2-phosphonic acid significantly reduced catechins accumulation and promoted larval growth of E. grisescens. Compared to mechanical wounding alone, simulated herbivory feeding (mechanical wounding plus oral secretions) i

Deciphering the role of growth regulators in enhancing plant immunity against herbivory.

Plants are central to global food production, and the pursuit of sustainability aims to enhance or preserve food quality while safeguarding the environment. Due to their immobility, plants are unable to evade unfavourable climatic setups or interactions with other living creatures. Upon their interaction with insect herbivores, plants face biotic stress, which is a constant challenge for plants, causing molecular, physiological, and biochemical changes and reducing their productivity. To combat biotic stress caused by herbivores, plants have evolved intricate defence mechanisms through growth
