Male hermaphroditism with rare malignant transformation of gonadal organs: a case report.

A 27-year-old man was admitted to the hospital after a year of marriage due to infertility. During laparoscopic exploratory surgery, the presence of a retrovesical uterus was clearly observed, and the gonadal organs were visible on both sides. However, the testicles or ovaries were not identifiable, nor were the spermatic vessels and fallopian tubes at the joint. Intraoperative bilateral gonad biopsy was performed. Cryopreservation of the right gonadal gland revealed gonadoblastoma and malignant germinoma (asexual tumor/seminoma) with sclerosis and atrophy of testicular tissue. No proliferatio

A role for organ level dynamics in morphogenesis of the C. elegans hermaphrodite distal tip cell.

The morphology of cells in vivo can arise from a variety of mechanisms. In the Caenorhabditis elegans hermaphrodite gonad, the distal tip cell (DTC) elaborates into a complex plexus over a relatively short developmental time period, but the mechanisms underlying this change in cell morphology are not well defined. We correlated the time of DTC elaboration with the L4-to-adult molt, but ruled out a relevant heterochronic pathway as a cue for DTC elaboration. Instead, we found that the timing of gonad elongation and aspects of underlying germline flux influence DTC elaboration. We propose a 'hit

Sex Allocation and Reproductive Success in a Perennial Hermaphroditic Herb: Both Size and Timing Matter.

AbstractIn simultaneous hermaphrodites, resource availability and the temporal distribution of mates determine male and female fitness and optimal sex allocation. In insect-pollinated plants, we expect individuals to allocate more to their female function when they are large and more to their male function when other individuals have many ovules available to be fertilized. Here, we studied the dependence of sex allocation and male and female components of reproductive success on both the size and the timing of reproduction in the plant Pulsatilla alpina (Ranunculaceae), accounting for inbreedi

Evolution: Mitochondrial lodgers can take over in hermaphroditic snails.

Mitochondria - the cell's power stations - are inherited uniparentally via eggs, not sperm. In hermaphroditic plants, they sometimes prevent their hosts from making pollen (and sperm), causing cytoplasmic male sterility. New evidence from a hermaphroditic freshwater snail now documents cytoplasmic male sterility in animals.

The unexpected mating system of the androdioecious barnacle Chelonibia testudinaria (Linnaeus 1758).

Androdioecy was first described by Darwin in his seminal work on barnacle diversity; he identified males and hermaphrodites in the same reproductive population. Today, we realize that many androdioecious plants and animals share astonishing similarities, particularly with regard to their evolutionary history and mating system. Notably, these species were ancestrally dioecious, and their mating system has the following characteristics: hermaphrodites self-fertilize frequently, males are more successful in large mating groups, and males have a mating advantage. A male mating advantage makes andr

Mapping fitness landscapes to interpret sex allocation in hermaphrodites.

Sex-allocation theory predicts sex ratios of dioecious organisms, but it has been poor at explaining sex allocation in hermaphrodites in which the assumed trade-off between male and female functions is often obscure. Here, we apply sex-allocation theory to hermaphrodites by mapping components of seasonal reproductive success onto a fitness landscape defined by potentially independent measures of allocation to male and female functions on orthogonal axes. We find that peaks of reproductive success in a perennial hermaphroditic plant reflect the interactive effect of both male and female allocat

Sperm competition favours intermediate sperm size in a hermaphrodite1.

Sperm competition is a potent mechanism of postcopulatory sexual selection that has been found to shape reproductive morphologies and behaviours in promiscuous animals. Especially sperm size has been argued to evolve in response to sperm competition through its effect on sperm longevity, sperm motility, the ability to displace competing sperm, and ultimately fertilization success. Additionally, sperm size has been observed to co-evolve with female reproductive morphology. Theoretical work predicts that sperm competition may select for longer sperm but may also favour shorter sperm if sperm siz

Selfing Promotes Spread and Introgression of Segregation Distorters in Hermaphroditic Plants.

Segregation distorters (SDs) are genetic elements that distort the Mendelian segregation ratio to favor their own transmission and are able to spread even when they incur fitness costs on organisms carrying them. Depending on the biology of the host organisms and the genetic architecture of the SDs, the population dynamics of SDs can be highly variable. Inbreeding is considered an effective mechanism for inhibiting the spread of SDs in populations, and can evolve as a defense mechanism against SDs in some systems. However, we show that inbreeding in the form of selfing in fact promotes the spr

[Anomalies of the genitalia and in sex differentiation].

Out of four biological sexes (male, female, bisexuality, asexuality) world legislation acknowledges only two. Therefore, hermaphrodites and eunuchs have either male or female documents. To determine human sexual anomaly, it is necessary to define genetic (chromosomal), gonadal (hormonal), phenotypic, psychological and legal sexes. True hermaphroditism must be distinguished from a false one: true hermaphrodites have both female and male gonads (or gonadal tissue), false hermaphrodites are unisexual, but their sex organs resemble those of the opposite sex. Five degrees of masculinization of the

A telomere-to-telomere gap-free genome assembly of the protandrous hermaphrodite Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer).

As a protandrous hermaphroditic fish species with natural sex change from male to female, Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) represents an attractive model for studying sequential hermaphroditism. In this study, we constructed the first telomere-to-telomere (T2T) gap-free genome assembly of Asian seabass, by integration of MGI short-read, PacBio HiFi long-read, ONT ultra-long and Hi-C sequencing technologies. The haplotypic 614.19 Mb genome sequences were successfully anchored onto 24 chromosomes, demonstrating exceptional contiguity with a contig N50 of 26.57 Mb. Comprehensive annotation reveal

Simultaneously hermaphroditic shrimp use lipophilic cuticular hydrocarbons as contact sex pheromones.

Successful mating is essentially a consequence of making the right choices at the correct time. Animals use specific strategies to gain information about a potential mate, which is then applied to decision-making processes. Amongst the many informative signals, odor cues such as sex pheromones play important ecological roles in coordinating mating behavior, enabling mate and kin recognition, qualifying mate choice, and preventing gene exchange among individuals from different populations and species. Despite overwhelming behavioral evidence, the chemical identity of most cues used in aquatic o

Sex-specific dynamics of reproductive investment by a Mediterranean hermaphroditic fish in a warming sea.

Sex-specific patterns of reproductive allocation remain poorly documented in wild vertebrate populations under rapidly changing environmental conditions. Here, we quantify variation in reproductive investment in a wild population of a simultaneous hermaphrodite, the painted comber (Serranus scriba). Three successive sampling periods spanned a pronounced and anomalously warm spawning season in the Mediterranean Sea, during which temperatures increased rapidly and coincided with multiple marine heatwave events. Across these periods, gonadosomatic indexes declined markedly in both sexual componen

A telomere-to-telomere genome assembly of the protandrous hermaphrodite blackhead seabream, Acanthopagrus schlegelii.

A remarkable life cycle of the protandrous blackhead seabream (Acanthopagrus schlegelii), initiating as a male during the first two years and then naturally transforming to a female since the third year, makes this fish a valuable model for studying molecular mechanisms of sex change. Fertilization mechanisms in hermaphroditic ascidians and nematodes: Common mechanisms with mammals and plants.

Most animals have male and female, whereas flowering plants are hermaphrodites. Exceptionally, a small population of invertebrates, including ascidians and nematodes, has hermaphrodite in reproductive strategies. Several ascidians exhibit strict self-sterility (or self-incompatibility), similar to flowering plants. Such a self-incompatibility mechanism in ascidian has been revealed to be very similar to those of flowering plants. Here, we describe the mechanisms of ascidian fertilization shared with invertebrates and mammals, as well as with plants. In the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, havi

Granulocytes in helminth infection -- who is calling the shots?

Helminths are parasitic organisms that can be broadly described as "worms" due to their elongated body plan, but which otherwise differ in shape, development, migratory routes and the predilection site of the adults and larvae. They are divided into three major groups: trematodes (flukes), which are leaf-shaped, hermaphroditic (except for blood flukes) flatworms with oral and ventral suckers; cestodes (tapeworms), which are segmented, hermaphroditic flatworms that inhabit the intestinal lumen; and nematodes (roundworms), which are dioecious, cylindrical parasites that inhabit intestinal and pe

Intraspecific variation in the sexual pattern of red-belted anthias, Pseudanthias rubrizonatus.

Recent studies indicate that the sexual patterns of some species can vary with local population size and density, suggesting that protogynous species may shift to gonochorism in larger populations. Red-belted anthias Pseudanthias rubrizonatus, a protogynous hermaphrodite, forms diverse-sized groups in Kagoshima Bay, Japan (31.58°N, 130.66°E), from typical polygynous medium-sized groups with a few males and several females, to an unusually large group exceeding 10,000 individuals. This study aimed to determine the sexual pattern of P. rubrizonatus in different-sized groups. The research was con

Sex allocation of hermaphrodites in metapopulations with frequent population extinction and recolonization.

Competition among related males, male gametes, or pollen grains to fertilize a limited number of females, eggs, or ovules (local mate competition) is expected to favor female-biased progeny sex ratios in dioecious species. In hermaphrodites, such 'local mate competition' should similarly promote female-biased sex allocation, with reduced investment in sperm or pollen relative to eggs, ovules, or seeds. Because inbreeding, especially self-fertilization, tends to generate local mate competition, female-biased sex allocation should be associated with positive inbreeding, for example, as measured

Environmental conditions modulate hermaphroditic pathways in Salpa thompsoni near the Western Antarctic Peninsula.

Field observations during summer-fall of 2018 in the Antarctic Peninsula region provided the first morphological evidence that under certain environmental conditions, Salpa thompsoni blastozooid development can deviate from its traditional sequential protogynous hermaphroditism (SPH). Early male testis development at female blastozooid stages points to a wide-spread overlapping protogynous hermaphroditism (OPH) in regions where warm Antarctic Circumpolar Current waters mix with colder Antarctic Coastal waters. Our findings highlight the importance of the environmental setting in determining th

Variation in self-compatibility among genotypes and across ontogeny in a self-fertilizing vertebrate, Kryptolebias marmoratus.

Mixed-mating strategies can maximize the benefits and limit the costs of both self-fertilization and outcrossing. In addition to ecological conditions and population dynamics, the economics of mixed mating are determined by individual self-compatibility, i.e. the proportion of self-fertilization events that result in viable offspring. In gynodioecious (hermaphrodites and females) and androdioecious (hermaphrodites and males) species, self-compatibility of hermaphrodites dictates the reproductive potential of the other sex and can exert strong selection on maintenance of the non-hermaphroditic

Hermaphrodites have lower metabolic rates than gonochores.

Hermaphroditism, where an individual can reproduce as both male and female, offers some clear reproductive advantages. Simultaneous hermaphroditism guarantees that every mature adult can mate with another-a particular advantage when opportunities to mate are scarce. Despite this potential benefit, hermaphroditism is relatively rare in animals. This paradox has long involved an energetics argument: hermaphrodites require more energy to fuel two reproductive roles instead of only one, which favours the evolution of separate sexes. However, this argument has never been tested. Here, we compare re
