A 63-year-old Caucasian female patient presented with redness of the both foot and lower legs, as well as edema of the left lower leg, accompanied by subjective complaints of burning. Fever was not reported. Well-circumscribed oval shaped tumor formation was revealed also on the abdominal wall, with hyperpigmented and depigmented areas on its ulcerated surface, measuring approximately 10/10cm in diameter, with soft-elastic texture on palpation. The lesion occurred in 2011, according to the patient's history. No subjective complaints were reported in association. The performed ultrasonography r

Traumatic abdominal hernias are rare, but are easily missed in patients with multiple injuries in whom life-threatening injuries take precedence. A case is reported in which difficulty was experienced with closure of the abdominal wall; at re-exploration a diagnosis of abdominal hernia was made, and a tear in the retroperitoneum with herniation of 2 feet of small bowel on the right side of the abdomen found. The hernia was reduced and the patient's recovery was uneventful. In all cases of celiotomy for trauma, complete exploration of the abdomen should be performed before closure to assure nor

BACKGROUND: Traumatic abdominal wall hernia (TAWH) is uncommonly encountered despite the high prevalence of blunt abdominal trauma. The diagnosis is often difficult because of its varied presentation along with lack of awareness of this entity.
METHODS: The case files of all patients with TAWH who were operated at our hospital were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed.
RESULTS: A total of 11 patients with TAWH were analyzed (8 males, 3 females). The clinical presentation was varied, with a palpable defect and a reducible swelling (6 patients), localized area of irreducible swelling (3 patie

Traumatic herniation of the abdominal wall is an unusual injury. Early morbidity is related to associated intra-abdominal organ injuries which are common. Late complications due to intestinal incarceration and strangulation can occur. Immediate celiotomy is necessary for hernia reduction and repair and for evaluation of intra-abdominal organ injury. This approach obviates any late complications.

Abdominal hernias are a common clinical problem. The main types of abdominal hernias are external or abdominal wall hernias, which involve protrusion of abdominal contents through a defect in the abdominal wall; internal hernias, which involve protrusion of viscera through the peritoneum or mesentery and into a compartment in the abdominal cavity; and diaphragmatic hernias, which involve protrusion of abdominal contents into the chest. Clinical diagnosis of abdominal hernias can be difficult. However, plain radiography, radiography performed after administration of barium, and computed tomogra

Traumatic abdominal wall hernia (TAWH) is rare despite the high prevalence of blunt abdominal trauma. Bullhorn hernia occurs as a result of a direct blow to the abdominal wall by the horn of a bull, which disrupts the muscles and fascia and leads to hernia formation. We report a rare case of bullhorn TAWH in a 70-year-old patient who presented with swelling at the left lumbar region. The patient was managed by immediate surgical intervention. A surgeon must have high index of suspicion for the diagnosis of this condition as missed hernias in this setting pose a high risk of strangulation and g

Traumatic abdominal wall hernia (TAWH) after blunt injury is uncommon. Diagnosis requires careful examination and high index of suspicion. We report a case of a 12-year-old boy who complained of painful abdominal swelling over the left iliac fossa after a bicycle-handlebar hit his abdomen. TAWH was diagnosed clinically and confirmed with ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) scan. He developed incarceration after 12 hours of admission and subsequently underwent primary repair without mesh. As TAWH is usually associated with other concomitant injuries, it is important that we are meticulous t

Traumatic abdominal wall hernias are a type of acquired hernia secondary to blunt trauma Caused, by direct trauma from handlebar like objects. This rare hernia is named 'Handlebar hernia'. We report a case of such hernia without any significant intra-abdominal injury. The abdominal wall defect was repaired in layers by Jones technique. Postoperative course was uneventful. The authors recommend clinical suspicion for traumatic hernia in all patients with traumatic abdominal wall injury. Definitive treatment includes surgical exploration with primary repair of all tissue layers of the abdominal

Although blunt abdominal trauma is frequent, traumatic abdominal wall hernias (TAWH) are rare. We describe a large TAWH with associated intra-abdominal lesions that were caused by high-energy trauma. The diagnosis was missed by clinical examination but was subsequently revealed by a computed tomography (CT) scan. Repair consisted of an open anatomical reconstruction of the abdominal wall layers with reinforcement by an intraperitoneal composite mesh. The patient recovered well and the results of a post-operative CT scan are presented.

Congenital abdominal wall defects that are located outside of the anterior wall are extremely rare and difficult to classify because there are no well accepted guidelines. There are two regions outside of the anterior wall: the flank or lateral wall; and the lumbar region. We report the case of a patient with an oval 3 cm-diameter hernia defect located above the anterior axillary line, which affects all layers of the muscular wall. An anorectal malformation consisting of a recto-vestibular fistula was also identified, and chest X-ray showed dextrocardia. The suggested treatment is repair of th

UNLABELLED: The aim of the study is to present problems connected with a diagnosis and treatment of incarcerated abdominal hernia. In the years 1990-2001, 142 patients with incarcerated abdominal hernia were admitted to hospital. In this group 112 patients were urgently operated on. These were 25 femoral hernias, 22 inguinal hernias, 23 umbilical hernias, 41 postoperative hernias and 1 internal hernia.
RESULTS: The patients presented on clinical picture gastrointestinal tract obstruction or peritonitis. Postoperative mortality was 5.4%, however, in the group of patients with incarcerated post

Traumatic abdominal wall hernias are rare injuries despite the high incidence of blunt abdominal traumas. The mechanism of this injury includes a sudden increase in intra-abdominal pressure and extensive shear forces applied to the abdominal wall. The typical location is found at anatomic weak areas in the lower abdomen. Often, significant intra-abdominal injuries or injuries of the pelvis and chest are associated. We describe a case of an abdominal contusion trauma leading to a traumatic abdominal wall hernia beside the rectal sheath. In this case, parts of the small bowel penetrated through

A 56-year-old female presented to her primary care physician (PCP) with years of a chronic right-sided abdominal mass. Initial imaging with an abdominal computed tomography (CT) did not reveal a true hernia but did show significant abdominal muscle wasting, causing outpouching of her abdominal wall. General surgery was consulted and noted a lack of response of the abdominal musculature on the right side when asked to brace her abdomen, prompting referral to physiatry to evaluate a potential neuromuscular source of the mass. Physical examination revealed a protuberant abdomen on the right great

Abdominal wall hernias are common diseases of the abdomen with a global incidence approximately 4%-5%. They are distinguished in external, diaphragmatic and internal hernias on the basis of their localisation. Groin hernias are the most common with a prevalence of 75%, followed by femoral (15%) and umbilical (8%). There is a higher prevalence in males (M:F, 8:1). Diagnosis is usually made on physical examination. However, clinical diagnosis may be difficult, especially in patients with obesity, pain or abdominal wall scarring. In these cases, abdominal imaging may be the first clue to the corr

In a review of 720 cases of peritoneal mesothelioma described in Medical Literature, there have been 361 patients for whom the diagnosis has been confirmed by necropsy, 294 by bioptic laparotomy and another 65, where there is no precise information on the method of histopathological diagnosis. Exposure to asbestos can be observed in 55% of the cases studied from the 1960's onwards. As for pathogenesis, amongst other irritant stimuli, it is noteworthy that abdominal hernias provoke mild but chronic reactions on peritoneal serosa. These hernias are to be found in at least 40 of the subjects affe

Post traumatic anterior abdominal wall hernia can be ignored in emergency settings. We here report the case of a 32-year-old patient with a BMI of 30 kg/m2, suffering from anterior abdominal wall hernia as a result of a road accident. This lesion wasn't detected during clinical examination. Abdominal tomodensitometry showed a defect of 8 cm in the anterior abdominal wall. The patient underwent surgery during which a musculoaponeurotic defect of 12 cm was detected. The repair was carried out using interrupted suture. The postoperative course was marked by a secondarily infected skin necrosis. T

Recurrence of hydatid cyst is one of the important complications of primary hydatid surgery. Here we present a very rare case of recurrent hydatid cyst inside an incisional hernial sac. A 50-year old male operated on for hydatid disease of the liver twice in 1998 and 2001 was admitted to our hospital for an abdominal mass formed under the old median incisional scar. On physical examination, a painless mass of 15 cm in diameter, stretched, hard and well bordered was palpated. There was also a fascial defect inferior to the mass. A herniated hydatid cyst was imaged with both of ultrasonography (
