Widespread convergent evolution of alpha-neurotoxin resistance in African mammals.

Convergent evolution is central to the study of adaptation and has been used to understand both the limits of evolution and the diverse patterns and processes which result in adaptive change. Resistance to snake venom alpha-neurotoxins (αNTXs) is a case of widespread convergence having evolved several times in snakes, lizards and mammals. Despite extreme toxicity of αNTXs, substitutions in its target, the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR), prevent αNTX binding and render species resistant. Recently, the published meerkat (Herpestidae) genome revealed that meerkats have the same substitu

Third eyelid in the small Indian mongoose (Herpestes javanicus): a morphological and histological study.

The Indian mongoose (Herpestes javanicus) is native to parts of Asia, Iran. The purpose of this study was to describe the gross anatomy of the cartilage and histology of the superficial gland of the third eyelid of two adult mongooses. The animals, in terminal stages of disease and near death due to aging or unknown reasons, were referred from Park Zoo (Shiraz, Iran) to our center. By using a modified maceration technique, the morphological characteristics of the cartilage were examined. For histological examinations of the superficial gland of the third eyelid, the samples were stained with h

First demonstration of Strongyloides parasite from an imported pet meerkat - Possibly a novel species in the stercoralis/procyonis group.

Strongyloides is a genus of parasitic nematodes of vertebrates that contains over 50 species, each with a variable host range. A recent molecular phylogenetic analysis on this genus showed that Strongyloides spp. from various carnivore hosts form a strongly supported clade together with Strongyloides stercoralis, a major pathogen of humans and dogs (named the "stercoralis/procyonis group"). In the present study, we obtained DNA sequencing data of Strongyloides sp. isolated from an imported meerkat (Suricata suricatta). Based on the phylogenetic analysis, we considered this a new member of the

Exposure to Rabies in Small Indian Mongooses (Herpestes auropunctatus) from Two Regions in Puerto Rico.

The small Indian mongoose (Herpestes auropunctatus) was introduced to several Caribbean Islands to control rat (Rattus spp.) damage to sugarcane plantations. Mongooses failed at suppressing rat populations and are now considered pests throughout most of their introduced range. Importantly, mongooses are rabies reservoirs on several Caribbean Islands. In Puerto Rico, mongooses have been implicated in up to 70% of reported animal rabies cases. There is no rabies vaccination program for wildlife in Puerto Rico, and data on rabies in mongooses are limited. We conducted a serosurvey of mongooses in

Suspected lily toxicosis in a meerkat (Suricata suricatta): a case report.

Lilies are considered nephrotoxic only to domestic cats, which belong to the family Felidae of the suborder Feliformia. However, a 7-month-old female meerkat, belonging to the family Herpestidae of the suborder Feliformia, presented with oliguria, seizure, tachypnea, self-biting, and nystagmus after it ingested lilies. The meerkat died approximately 40 hr after lily ingestion. Gross and histopathologic lesions consistent with acute renal failure were conspicuous in the animal. The renal lesions were acute tubular necrosis, corresponding to the typical pathological changes of lily toxicosis in

Management of Severe Periodontal Disease and Gingival Enlargement in a Dwarf Mongoose (Helogale parvula).

Development of gingival enlargement and periodontitis is described in a young dwarf mongoose. Repeated treatments resulted in gingival resection and histologic evaluation however gingival enlargement was ultimately responsive to extraction of associated teeth. In cases such as these, surgical extraction of teeth associated with severe recurrent gingival enlargement should be considered to avoid the stress and risk of repeated immobilizations.

Evolutionary history of African mongoose rabies.

Two biotypes or variants of rabies virus (RABV) occur in southern Africa. These variants are respectively adapted to hosts belonging to the Canidae family (the canid variant) and hosts belonging to the Herpestidae family (the mongoose variant). Due to the distinct host adaptation and differences in epidemiology and pathogenesis, it has been hypothesized that the two variants were introduced into Africa at different times. The objective of this study was to investigate the molecular phylogeny of representative RABV isolates of the mongoose variant towards a better understanding of the origins o

Pathology and causes of death in captive meerkats (Suricata suricatta).

BACKGROUND: Meerkats (Suricata suricatta) are endemic carnivores of southern Africa and, although currently listed as 'least concern' by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list, there is evidence of a significant decrease in wild populations mainly attributed to effects of climate change. Little is known about diseases associated with mortality in captive meerkats. AIM: To characterise macroscopic and microscopic lesions that accounted for the death or euthanasia in a series of captive meerkats. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eight captive meerkats submitted for post-mortem

Anaplastic mandibular carcinoma in a meerkat (Suricata suricatta).

An 8-yr-old female slender-tailed meerkat (Suricata suricatta) presented with a necrotic sublingual mass and osteolysis of the mandible. After 1 mo of palliative care, the meerkat was euthanized. The mass was diagnosed histologically as an anaplastic carcinoma with extensive rostral mandibular destruction. Immunohistochemistry for vimentin and cytokeratin was validated in this nontypical species and showed that neoplastic cells expressed both mesenchymal and epithelial characteristics, suggestive of a primitive and poorly differentiated tumor. A review of 150 adult slender-tailed meerkat histo

The ecology of gestational growth in a wild cooperative mammal.

In wild mammals, early postnatal growth strongly affects offspring survival and fitness, but little is known about the causes and consequences of variation in prenatal growth. We investigated whether gestational weight gains vary according to maternal traits and social and environmental conditions, and how prenatal growth affects the fates of the resulting offspring, using an exceptionally large sample of repeated pregnant body weight records from individually recognizable wild meerkats (Suricata suricatta). Pregnant meerkats' body weights remained stable during the first half of gestation and

Primary well differentiated hepatic liposarcoma in a meerkat (Suricata suricatta).

A 9-year-old female meerkat (Suricata suricatta) succumbed to progressive abdominal distension, anorexia, and depression. Necropsy revealed an extensively distended abdomen with ascites and markedly enlarged liver. The liver had multiple yellowish masses and displaced the thoracic cavity and abdominal organs. There was no evidence of metastatic lesions based on the gross and microscopic findings. Histologically, the liver mass was composed of locally invasive well-differentiated neoplastic adipocytes with Oil Red O-positive lipid vacuoles. Immunohistochemistry revealed positive immunoreactivit

Binary dwarf mongoose optimizer for solving high-dimensional feature selection problems.

Selecting appropriate feature subsets is a vital task in machine learning. Its main goal is to remove noisy, irrelevant, and redundant feature subsets that could negatively impact the learning model's accuracy and improve classification performance without information loss. Therefore, more advanced optimization methods have been employed to locate the optimal subset of features. This paper presents a binary version of the dwarf mongoose optimization called the BDMO algorithm to solve the high-dimensional feature selection problem. The effectiveness of this approach was validated using 18 high-

Intergroup aggression in meerkats.

Violent conflicts between groups have been observed among many species of group living mammals and can have important fitness consequences, with individuals being injured or killed and with losing groups surrendering territory. Here, we explore between-group conflict among meerkats (Suricata suricatta), a highly social and cooperatively breeding mongoose. We show that interactions between meerkat groups are frequently aggressive and sometimes escalate to fighting and lethal violence and that these interactions have consequences for group territories, with losing groups moving to sleeping burro

Oral vaccination of captive small Indian mongoose (Herpestes auropunctatus) against rabies.

The small Indian mongoose (Herpestes auropunctatus), a rabies reservoir species on several Islands in the Caribbean, was successfully immunized against rabies for the first time by offering animals a vaccine bait specifically designed for this small carnivore. The bait contained on average 0.6 mL of the genetically modified replication-competent rabies virus construct SPBN GASGAS (10(8.5) focus-forming units/mL). Three of four mongooses offered a bait developed an immune response above 0.5 IU/mL, but the response was less pronounced than in two animals offered the vaccine by direct oral instil

The rise and fall of an arbitrary tradition: an experiment with wild meerkats.

Humans often follow the choices of others, even when profitable alternatives exist, leading to the maintenance of arbitrary traditions. Arbitrary traditions have also been shown to persist in captive groups of other animals, but it is unclear whether they do so in the wild where there are ample opportunities for exploring alternatives. We conducted the first experiment examining the maintenance of arbitrary traditions in wild mammal groups. We trained 'demonstrators' in seven meerkat groups to obtain rewards from one out of the two distinctive landmarks. Two control groups had no trained demon

The combined effects of elevated predation risk and anthropogenic noise on dwarf mongoose vigilance behaviour.

Anthropogenic noise is a pervasive pollutant in the world's ecosystems, with numerous studies demonstrating negative physiological, developmental and behavioural impacts across taxa. However, research has tended to focus on anthropogenic noise in isolation; many species often experience this pollutant in conjunction with other anthropogenic and natural stressors. Here, we used a field experiment to investigate the combined effects of a sequential elevation in perceived predation risk followed by exposure to road noise on the vigilance behaviour of dwarf mongooses (Helogale parvula). As expecte

Safety studies with the oral rabies virus vaccine strain SPBN GASGAS in the small Indian mongoose (Herpestes auropunctatus).

BACKGROUND: Oral vaccination of the small Indian mongoose against rabies has been suggested as a potential tool to eliminate mongoose-mediated rabies on several Caribbean islands. A recently developed oral rabies virus vaccine strain, SPBN GASGAS, has already been shown to be efficacious in this reservoir species. Since, all available oral rabies vaccines are based on replication-competent viruses and vaccine baits are distributed unsupervised in the environment, enhanced safety standards for such vaccine types are required. RESULTS: The results of safety studies, including overdose, repeated

A retrospective study of wildlife rabies in Zimbabwe, between 1992 and 2003.

To assess the epidemiological features of wildlife rabies in Zimbabwe, a retrospective study covering a period of 12 years (1992-2003) was conducted using rabies records of the Central Veterinary Laboratories (CVL), Department of Veterinary Technical Services at Harare. Records of monthly and annual wildlife rabies were perused with regard to total samples submitted to the CVL and corresponding positive cases. Positive cases were analyzed in relation to the animal species involved, seasonal trends, and land-use categories. A total of 2107 samples were submitted and 1 540 (73.1%) were positive.

THE LYSOSOMAL STORAGE DISEASE GM2 GANGLIOSIDOSIS IN CAPTIVE BANDED MONGOOSE SIBLINGS ( MUNGOS MUNGO).

This study reports the occurrence of the lysosomal storage disease GM2 gangliosidosis (Sandhoff disease) in two 11-mo-old captive-bred, male and female mongoose siblings ( Mungos mungo). The clinical signs and the pathological findings reported here were similar to those reported in other mammalian species. Light microscopy revealed an accumulation of stored material in neurons and macrophages accompanied by a significant neuronal degeneration (swelling of neuronal soma, loss of Nissl substance, and neuronal loss) and gliosis. Electron microscopy of brain tissue identified the stored material
