Cutaneous infections caused by Herpesviridae: a review.

The herpes family of viruses accounts for a significant proportion of human cutaneous disease. Although most episodes of viral infection can be diagnosed clinically, a small subset of these outbreaks will require biopsy for histologic interpretation and diagnosis. Most herpesviruses cause characteristic architectural and cytologic changes in the context of active infection, whereas the effects of some will not manifest until the future as malignant disease. Other infections may go unnoticed secondary to a lack of specific histologic findings. Because herpesviruses cause such a wide spectrum of

Herpesviridae Infection: Prevention, Screening, and Management.

Bacterial, viral, and parasitic pathogens add significant morbidity and even mortality to pregnancy-with adverse effects extending to both the gravida and the newborn. Three herpesviruses deserve considerable attention given the effects of perinatal infection on obstetric outcomes, specifically maternal and neonatal morbidity. In the following review, we will provide a description of cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex virus, and varicella zoster virus. For each viral pathogen, we will describe the epidemiology, natural history, screening and diagnosis modalities, treatments, and implications for

Herpesviridae infections in newborns: varicella zoster virus, herpes simplex virus, and cytomegalovirus.

Varicella zoster virus (VZV), herpes simplex virus (HSV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) are all members of the Herpesviridae family.Humans are the only source of infection for these double stranded DNA viruses. Infants may acquire these infections in utero, peripartum, or postnatally, resulting in a variety of clinical syndromes, ranging from asymptomatic infection to severe infection, with high mortality rates and significant long-term morbidity. This article presents the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, treatment, and prevention strategies for VZV, HSV, and CMV infections in infants.

Pulmonary co-infections by Pneumocystis jirovecii and Herpesviridae: a seven-year retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Pneumocystis jirovecii (P. jirovecii) is an opportunistic fungus responsible for Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) in deeply immunocompromised patients and for pulmonary colonization in individuals with mild immunosuppression or impaired respiratory function. PCP and Cytomegalovirus (CMV) co-infections have been widely described whereas those involving other Herpesviruses (HVs) such as Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), Herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2 (HSV-1 and  -2), and Varicella zoster virus (VZV) remain scarce. To date, no data are available concerning HVs co-infections in P. jiroveci

COVID-19 infection and vaccines: potential triggers of Herpesviridae reactivation.

Since the onset of the COVID-19 outbreak, numerous articles have highlighted a possible link between COVID-19 vaccination or infection and Herpesviridae co-infection or reactivation. The authors conducted an exhaustive literature review on this topic, the results of which are presented individually for each member of the Herpesviridae family: Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) types-1 (HSV-1) and 2 (HSV-2); Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV); Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV); Cytomegalovirus (CMV); HHV-6; HHV-7; and HHV-8. These human herpesviruses can serve as prognostic markers for the COVID-19 infection and may

Low-productive alpha-herpesviridae infection in chronic lichenoid dermatoses.

BACKGROUND: Herpes simplex virus (HSV) and Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) are responsible for various atypical mucocutaneous manifestations in the immunosuppressed population. One of the causative pathomechanisms suggests an altered virus-host cell relationship. OBJECTIVE/METHODS: This report investigates by histology, immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization the histological and virological features of 6 protracted, indolent HSV infections and 2 prolonged zoster infections. RESULTS: Histopathology revealed a lichenoid dermatitis in all patients. Specific HSV-1, HSV-2 and VZV in situ hyb

RNA-guided endonuclease provides a therapeutic strategy to cure latent herpesviridae infection.

Latent viral infection is a persistent cause of human disease. Although standard antiviral therapies can suppress active viral replication, no existing treatment can effectively eradicate latent infection and therefore a cure is lacking for many prevalent viral diseases. The prokaryotic immune system clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)/Cas evolved as a natural response to phage infections, and we demonstrate here that the CRISPR/Cas9 system can be adapted for antiviral treatment in human cells by specifically targeting the genomes of latent viral infections. OBJECTIVES: The herpesviridae family includes, among others, herpes simplex virus, varicella zoster virus, Epstein-Barr virus, and cytomegalovirus. Herpesviridae viral infections (HVIs) can lead to serious complications in lymphoma patients undergoing chemotherapy. There is no consensus on the dose and duration of antiviral prophylaxis in these patients. We retrospectively analyzed the incidence and risk factors for HVI in lymphoma patients undergoing chemotherapy. METHODS: We reviewed the records of 266 patients who were newly diagnosed with lymphoma and received chemotherapy without acyclov

Maternal Herpesviridae infection during pregnancy alters midbrain dopaminergic signatures in adult offspring.

BACKGROUND: Motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) are apparent after a high proportion of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra have degenerated. The vast majority of PD cases are sporadic, and the underlying pathobiological causes are poorly understood. Adults exhibit great variability in the numbers of nigral dopamine neurons, suggesting that factors during embryonic or early life regulate the development and physiology of dopaminergic neurons. Furthermore, exposure to infections and inflammation in utero has been shown to affect fetal brain development in models of schizophrenia and

Global Risk of Bacterial Skin Infections and Herpesviridae Infections with Ustekinumab, Secukinumab, and Tumour Necrosis Factor-alpha Inhibitors: Spontaneous Reports of Adverse Drug Reactions from the World Health Organization Pharmacovigilance Center.

Genetic defects in interleukin-12/23/17 immunity are associated with an increased risk of Staphylococcus aureus and herpesvirus skin infections. This study analysed spontaneous safety reports from the WHO Pharmacovigilance Center of bacterial skin or herpesvirus infections associated with secukinumab, ustekinumab and tumour necrosis factor-α inhibitors. Associations found in disproportionality analyses were expressed as reporting odds ratios (ROR). For bacterial skin infections, ustekinumab showed the strongest association (ROR 6.09; 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 5.44-6.81), and, among the
