HHV-6, the first T-lymphotropic human herpesvirus, is an important novel human pathogen. It is the cause of exanthem subitum in infants and may act as an opportunistic agent in immunocompromised patients. Moreover, several lines of clinical and experimental evidence suggest that HHV-6 may accelerate the progression of HIV infection. Progress in the study of HHV-6 has been rapid, in part as a consequence of the strong current interest in human lymphotropic viruses and their relationship with the immune system. Nonetheless, the full spectrum of diseases linked to this agent is still unknown (Tab

Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) was first isolated in 1986, and it was proposed that this virus causes exanthem subitum (ES) by the following evidence; HHV-6 can be isolated from ES patients at high frequency, and the antibody titer to HHV-6 in patients increased significantly during the convalescent phase of ES. This virus transmits horizontally mainly form mother to child during infancy. HHV-6 DNA can be detected in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of ES patients having neurological symptoms, and also in CSF of patients with frequent febrile convulsions after ES, suggesting high affinity to nervous

Primary human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) infection causes exanthem subitum,a common febrile illness,in infants. At the time of primary infection with HHV-6, the virus rarely causes encephalitis. Recently, various types of clinical features of patients with HHV-6 encephalitis have been reported. Therefore, appropriate procedures for the management of these patients should be established on the basis of the clinical features of the patients. In addition to primary infection with the virus, reactivation of HHV-6 can be associated with encephalitis in the case of immunocompromised patients. Numerous co

The newly isolated virus, human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6), causes exanthem subitum (or roseola infantum) as the primary infection. Liver dysfunction and neurological disorders are observed during exanthem subitum. Seroepidemiological studies have shown that almost all children are infected with HHV-6 about 6-24 months after birth. This virus also causes other diseases including lymphadenitis and infectious mononucleosis-like disease. HHV-6 has cellular tropism for CD4+ lymphocytes, in which it replicates in vivo. Its transmission is probably airborne early in life, mainly from mother to child, bec

Human Herpesvirus-6 is the etiological agent of Roseola infantum and approximately 12% of heterophile antibody negative infectious mononucleosis. HHV-6 is T-lymphotropic, and readily infects and lyses CD4+ cells. The prevalence rate of HHV-6 in the general population is about 80% (as measured by IFA) with an IgG antibody titer of 1:80. A lower prevalence, however, is observed in some countries. HHV-6 is reactivated in various malignant and non-malignant diseases as well as in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and transplant patients. Furthermore, elevated antibody titers were also observed in lymphopro

Multiple lines of clinical and experimental evidence suggest that human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) may act as an accelerating factor in the natural history of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Although, in common with HIV, HHV-6 has a primary tropism for CD4+ T cells, its potential effects on the immune system are broader. For instance, HHV-6 can also infect and kill CD8+ T cells, natural killer cells and mononuclear phagocytes. Here, Paolo Lusso and Robert Gallo suggest that understanding the immunopathogenic role of HHV-6 in the course of HIV infection may shed new light on the comple

Human herpesvirus type 6 (HHV-6), a newly recognized human herpesvirus first described in 1986, is morphologically similar to other herpesviruses but is distinguishable from all of them by some unique in vitro biological effects, specific antigenic analysis, and patterns of endonuclease restriction digests of DNA. In vitro HHV-6 exhibits tropism mainly for T lymphocytes, but it also infects other cells, including B lymphocytes, monocytes-macrophages, glial cells, and fibroblasts. Because HHV-6 causes frequent infection in infants and children, a seroprevalence rate of antibody to this virus of

Human B-lymphotropic virus (HBLV), also known as human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6) was first isolated in 1986 from AIDS patients and patients with other lymphoproliferative disorders. HBLV is distinct from known human herpesviruses, biologically, immunologically and by molecular analysis. HBLV can infect and replicate in fresh and established lines of hemopoietic cells and cells of neural origin, suggesting wide tropism. The prevalence of HBLV antibody in the normal population was 26% though clear differences between different populations were observed. The prevalence of HBLV antibody an elevated an

Virus-associated hemophagocytic syndrome (VAHS) is characterized by histiocytic proliferation and phagocytosis triggered by virus infections. Viruses in the herpes group, especially the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), are well known to cause VAHS; however, the relationship between this syndrome and human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6) infection has rarely been reported. In this study, we describe a 23-month-old girl who exhibited typical manifestations of VAHS associated with HHV-6 infection. To the best of our knowledge, this case is the fifth reported case in the English literature.

Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) and HHV-7 are two recently identified beta-herpesviruses, genetically related to human cytomegalovirus (CMV). Infection with both viruses is common worldwide with rates of seropositivity in adults over 90%. Infection with both viruses usually occurs in early childhood. In this age group HHV-6 is a cause of febrile illness including exanthem subitum, and likewise, primary HHV-7 infection has been associated with febrile illness. Similar to the other human herpesviruses, in particular CMV, the viruses have the potential for enhanced pathogenicity in the immunocompromi

Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) is a ubiquitous virus that causes the childhood febrile illness exanthem subitum. Primary infection usually occurs in the first few years of life and the virus is considered to be one of the most common causes of acute febrile illness in childhood. HHV-6 can infect the central nervous system, causing meningitis or encephalitis after an acute attack of exanthem subitum. Febrile convulsions are common in early childhood, affecting 2--3% of children between 6 months and 5 years of age. Primary HHV-6 infection has been reported to be complicated by febrile convulsions i

Infections with human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6), a beta-herpesvirus of which two variant groups (A and B) are recognized, is very common, approaching 100% in seroprevalence. Primary infection with HHV-6B causes roseola infantum or exanthem subitum, a common childhood disease that resolves spontaneously. After primary infection, the virus replicates in the salivary glands and is shed in saliva, the recognized route of transmission for variant B strains; it remains latent in lymphocytes and monocytes and persists at low levels in cells and tissues. Not usually associated with disease in the immunoco

Since the discovery of human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6) the illnesses associated with it have increased steadily. Two infants with meningitis are reported: both suffered a mild meningitis and serological studies confirmed an acute HHV-6 infection. This report supports a role of HHV-6 in nervous system disease.

Human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6) was first isolated in 1986 from peripheral blood leukocytes of patients with lymphoproliferative disorders. Although HHV-6 is distinct from the other human herpes viruses, DNA studies have revealed some genomic similarities with cytomegalovirus. It has recently become evident that up to 95% of older children and adults are HHV-6 seropositive. Infection is believed to occur early in life, after maternal antibody has waned. Up to 92% of healthy adults shed HHV-6 in saliva, and evidence indicates that this secretion is important in spread of the virus. In situ hybridiz

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Pityriasis rosea (PR) is a common papulosquamous skin disease with unknown etiology. The possible relationship of PR with human herpesvirus infection (HHV) has been extensively studied. This study used the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to investigate the presence of human herpesvirus 6 and 7 (HHV-6 and HHV-7) in 41 PR patients from two hospitals in Northern Taiwan. The epidemiologic features of PR in patients were also studied.
METHODS: A total of 41 PR patients (11 males, 30 females) were enrolled in this study from April 1999 to March 2000. PCR of skin biopsy speci
