Effect of Hesperidin on Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors: The Role of Intestinal Microbiota on Hesperidin Bioavailability.

Recently, hesperidin, a flavonone mainly present in citrus fruits, has emerged as a new potential therapeutic agent able to modulate several cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) risk factors. Animal and in vitro studies demonstrate beneficial effects of hesperidin and its derived compounds on CVD risk factors. Thus, hesperidin has shown glucose-lowering and anti-inflammatory properties in diabetic models, dyslipidemia-, atherosclerosis-, and obesity-preventing effects in CVDs and obese models, and antihypertensive and antioxidant effects in hypertensive models. However, there is still controversy ab

Hesperidin: A Therapeutic Agent For Obesity.

The development of new therapies for cancer has led to dramatic improvements in survivorship. Angiogenesis inhibitors represent one such advancement, revolutionising treatment for a wide range of malignancies. However, these drugs are associated with cardiovascular toxicities which can impact optimal cancer treatment in the short-term and may lead to increased morbidity and mortality in the longer term. Vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors (VEGFIs) are associated with hypertension, left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD) and heart failure as well as arterial and venous thromboemb

The Flavonoids Hesperidin and Diosmin: Adjuvant Therapy for Obesity.

The flavonoids are polyphenolic plant products, characterized by a 15-carbon skeleton which includes two benzene rings. Two active flavonoids, diosmin and hesperidin, are used as venotonic and vasculoprotective agents in clinical practice. They are indicated for the management of varicose veins, chronic venous insufficiency and haemorrhoids. They help improve circulatory tone, reduce inflammation, strengthen venous walls, and alleviate symptoms such as discomfort, pain and swelling. In this communication, we explore their potential use in obesity, especially obesity related oedema (obestasis).

Hesperidin restores experimentally induced neurotoxicity in Wistar rats.

Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is a highly toxic industrial solvent with pronounced systemic toxicity including brain. Neurotoxicity may be a direct result of hepatic dysfunction from CCl4 intoxication. Over the years CCl4 has been used as an excellent model for studying experimentally induced neurotoxicity in murine models. Hesperidin (HP) is a known cytoprotectant with comprehensive anti-oxidant and neuroprotective properties. The aim of the present study was to evaluate experimentally induced neurotoxicity by CCl4 and its abrogation by using antioxidant potential of HP. CCl4 caused a significa

Amelioration of cognition by hesperidin-conjugated cobalt oxide nanoparticles.

Diabetes mellitus is one of the metabolic syndromes that is associated with cognitive deficit, dementia, and Alzheimer's disease (AD) like pathology due to impaired insulin-signalling in the brain, oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. Nanotechnology is one of the most promising techniques for targeting the brain. However, the toxicity of metal nanoparticles is one of the biggest challenges to be studied. In this study, cobalt oxide nanoparticles are conjugated to a bioflavonoid, hesperidin, a natural antioxidant. The study is designed to assess the efficacy and safety of the cobalt

Dietary Hesperidin Suppresses Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Inflammation in Male Mice.

Depressive disorders are partially attributed to chronic inflammation associated with the tryptophan (Trp)-kynurenine (Kyn) pathway. Recent evidence suggests that anti-inflammatory agents may reduce the risk of depression. The present study aimed to elucidate the potential of the citrus flavonoid hesperidin, which exhibits anti-inflammatory activity, in suppressing the Trp-Kyn pathway in the brain, using a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation mouse model. Dietary hesperidin was found to suppress activation of the Trp-Kyn pathway in the prefrontal cortex. In addition, it reduced system

Hesperidin opposes the negative impact of cyclophosphamide on mice kidneys.

The present investigation examined the prospective nephroprotective effect of hesperidin (HSN) in mice challenged with a single i.p. injection of cyclophosphamide (CPE) at a dose of 200 mg/kg. HSN (100 and 200 mg/kg/day, p.o.) was given for 10 days, starting 5 days prior to CPE administration. HSN significantly reduced the CPE-induced increments of serum creatinine and cystatin C. HSN also significantly reduced malondialdehyde, nitric oxide, Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, and caspase-3, and significantly raised total antioxidant capacity, and interleukin-10/tumor necrosis factor-α ratio in kidneys of mice r
