If human social anxiety is not predominately about the fear of physical injury or attack, as it is in other animals, then, to understand human social anxiety (i.e., fear of evaluation), it is necessary to consider why certain types of relationships are so important. Why do humans need to court the good feelings of others and fear not doing so? And why, when people wish to appear attractive to others (e.g., to make friends, date a desired sexual partner, or give a good presentation), do some people become so overwhelmed with anxiety that they behave submissively and fearfully (which can be seen

As complex individualized behaviors in mice arise even when genes and environment are held constant, emerging social group structures should also depend on individual behavior. Adult hippocampal neurogenesis drives individual behavior and is involved in certain social behaviors. Would thus the emergence of social structure depend on adult-born neurons? To answer this question, we co-housed cohorts of female mice with intact and genetically diminished general adult neurogenesis in a large-scale automated tracking system for three months and analyzed the development of social behaviors over time

Social hierarchy refers to the set of social ranks in a group of animals where individuals can gain priority access to resources through repeated social interactions. Key mechanisms involved in this process include conflict, social negotiation, prior experience, and physical advantages. The establishment and maintenance of social hierarchies not only promote group stability and well-being but also shape individual social behaviors by fostering cooperation and reducing conflict. Existing research indicates that social hierarchy is closely associated with immune responses, neural regulation, met

In the current study, we combined sociometric nominations and neuroimaging techniques to examine adolescents' neural tracking of peers from their real-world social network that varied in social preferences and popularity. Adolescent participants from an entire school district (N = 873) completed peer sociometric nominations of their grade at school, and a subset of participants (N = 117, Mage = 13.59 years) completed a neuroimaging task in which they viewed peer faces from their social networks. We revealed two neural processes by which adolescents track social preference: (1) the fusiform fac

Social interactions establish reproductive hierarchies and regulate division of labor in eusocial insect colonies. In the ant Harpegnathos saltator , queen loss induces a subset of workers to transition into reproductive pseudo-queens, known as gamergates, through a ritualized antennal-dueling tournament that can last for more than a month. Gamergate transition is associated with sustained dueling engagement, yet the interaction networks and social dynamics that shape reproductive hierarchy formation remain unclear. Here, we combine long-term automated tracking with behavioral classifiers to s

Social hierarchy represents a ubiquitous principle of social organization, often intuitively conceptualized as a pyramidal structure. The present study investigated whether subjective power can reshape this mental representation, thereby attenuating perceived psychological distance between social classes. Using eye-tracking technology and time-series representational similarity analysis, we measured participants' gaze patterns toward stimuli denoting high- and low-status individuals under different power states. Results revealed a robust upward gaze bias toward high-status targets in the contr

Position in the social hierarchy is a major determinant of health outcomes. We examined the associations between aspects of social hierarchy and depressive symptoms with a specific focus on one potential psychological mechanism: emotion suppression. Suppressing negative emotion has mental health costs, but individuals with low social power and low social status may use these strategies to avoid conflict. Study 1 assessed perceived social power, tendency to suppress negative emotion, and depressive symptoms in a community sample of women. Low social power was related to greater depressive sympt

Intermale aggression is used to establish social rank. Several neuronal populations have been implicated in aggression, but the circuit mechanisms that shape this innate behavior and coordinate its different components (including attack execution and reward) remain elusive. We show that dopamine transporter-expressing neurons in the hypothalamic ventral premammillary nucleus (PMvDAT neurons) organize goal-oriented aggression in male mice. Activation of PMvDAT neurons triggers attack behavior; silencing these neurons interrupts attacks. Regenerative PMvDAT membrane conductances interacting with

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by impaired socio-communicational function, repetitive and restricted behaviors. Valproic acid (VPA) was reported to increase the prevalence of ASD in humans as a consequence of its use during pregnancy. VPA treatment also induces autistic-like behaviors in the offspring of rats after prenatal exposure; hence it is a preclinical disease model with high translational value. In the present study, our aim was to characterize ASD relevant behaviors of socially housed, individually identified male rats in automated home cages. The natural behavior of

In laboratory male mice the effects of social hierarchy on hormonal and spermatogenic testicular function, accessory organs and testicular weights, sexual behaviour have been investigated using an experimental model of social hierarchy, which is characterised by a minimal size (two male mice) and 5 days period of social interactions. The social rank of the partners was detected by asymmetry in aggressive behaviour. Using the experimental condition, when the both partners have no preferences for exclusive use of area we demonstrated that there were no rank differences in the number of mounts an

Social hierarchies structure groups and confer advantages on high-ranking individuals. In mice, individual position in hierarchies may emerge situationally from current group compositions, or, alternatively, may remain largely stable across groups as an internalized feature. Dominance and subordination are expressed in behaviors like tube competitions or agonistic chasing. The interaction of these behaviors in the shaping of social position in larger male mouse groups remains largely unknown. To address these questions, we developed the NoSeMaze, a semi-naturalistic, open-source, modular platf

Social hierarchies, which organize our social relationships, have heterogeneous effects on choice behavior. Two central dimensions of social hierarchies, status, which is earned through recognition of competence, and power, which is the capacity to control the outcomes of others, may contribute to different behavioral profiles. Yet, the neurocomputational processes by which status- and power-related signals are learned based on social feedback, and influence subsequent decision-making, remain unclear. Here, we combine functional neuroimaging with computational modeling to examine how individua

Dopamine (DA) plays significant roles in regulation of social behavior. In social groups of humans and other animals, social hierarchy exists, which is determined by several behavioral characteristics such as aggression and impulsivity as well as social affiliations. In this study, we investigated the effects of pharmacological blockade of DA D2 receptor on social hierarchy of Japanese macaque and mouse social groups. We found acute administration of the D2 antagonist, sulpiride, in socially housed Japanese macaques attenuated social dominance when the drug was given to high social class macaq

The perception and judgement of social hierarchies forms an integral part of social cognition. Hierarchical judgements can be either self-referential or allocentric (pertaining to two or more external agents). In psychiatric conditions such as dissocial personality disorder and schizophrenia, the impact of hierarchies may be problematic. We sought to elucidate the brain regions involved in judging allocentric social hierarchies. Twenty-two healthy male subjects underwent three fMRI scans. During scanning, subjects answered questions concerning visually-presented target pairs of human individua

Social hierarchies in sex-changing fish determine which fish will change sex, yet the complexities of hierarchy formation at the neurobehavioural level are still being unravelled. Here, we investigate the formation of social hierarchies within groups of New Zealand spotty wrasse, integrating behavioural observations with neural activation patterns upon social disruption. We find that dominance hierarchies form linearly based on size, with larger fish displaying more dominant behaviours and smaller fish displaying more submissive behaviours. Disruption of the social hierarchy induced rapid beha

This study explored the psychometric properties and utility of the exposure hierarchy as a measure of treatment outcome for social anxiety disorder (SAD). An exposure hierarchy was created for each of 103 individuals with a diagnosis of SAD who completed a course of cognitive behavioral group therapy. Exposure hierarchy ratings were collected on a weekly basis, and a series of self-report measures were collected before and after treatment. Results indicated that the exposure hierarchy demonstrated high test-retest reliability, as well as significant convergent validity, as participants' exposu

BACKGROUND: Social status in humans, generally reflected by socioeconomic status, has been associated, when constrained, with heightened vulnerability to pathologies including psychiatric diseases. Social hierarchy in mice translates into individual and interdependent behavioral strategies of animals within a group. The rules leading to the emergence of a social organization are elusive, and detangling the contribution of social status from other factors, whether environmental or genetic, to normal and pathological behaviors remains challenging.
METHODS: We investigated the mechanisms shaping

Emotion regulation is thought to involve communication between and within large-scale brain networks that underlie emotion reactivity and cognitive control. Aberrant network interaction might therefore be a key neural feature of mental disorders that involve emotion dysregulation. Here we tested whether connectivity hierarchies within and between emotion reactivity and cognitive reappraisal networks distinguishes social anxiety disorder (SAD) patients (n = 70) from healthy controls (HC) (n = 25). To investigate network organization, we implemented a graph-theory method called Dependency Networ

Early-life social experience can strongly affect adult behavior, yet the behavioral mechanisms underlying developmental trajectories are poorly understood. Here, we use the highly social cichlid, Burton's Mouthbrooder (Astatotilapia burtoni) to investigate juvenile social status and behavior, as well as the underlying neuroendocrine mechanisms. We placed juveniles in pairs or triads and found that they readily establish social status hierarchies, with some group structural variation depending on group size, as well as the relative body size of the group members. Next, we used intracerebroventr

What happens when disadvantaged group members try to gain power in an attempt to protect their collective autonomy? The present integrative review outlines dynamic social processes and conditions under which efforts to restrict a group's collective autonomy motivate social movement mobilization among disadvantaged groups to challenge social hierarchies that limit their power. This, in turn, threatens advantaged groups' perceptions of their access to power and, by extension, their sense of collective autonomy, motivating them to reaffirm the existing social hierarchy by mobilizing counter-movem
