Patients undergoing methadone maintenance treatment self-report enhanced preferences for, and excessive consumption of, foods rich in sugar. However, it is unclear whether these are direct pharmacological effects of methadone or the consequences of metabolic dysfunctions induced by addiction to illicit opiates. Hence, the current study in drug-naïve male Sprague-Dawley rats explored the effects of steady-state methadone delivered by osmotic mini-pumps (13 days; 0, 10, 30 mg/kg/day) on consumption of rat chow and a palatable, sweet, liquid high fructose corn syrup solution. Six days after the r

BACKGROUND/AIM: The global prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) continues to increase, necessitating the need for understanding the causes of its development. The widespread use of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) in drinks and diets is suspected to play a role in metabolic disorders. Although many studies have reported on the effects of excessive HFCS and excessive energy intakes in middle-aged individuals, few have focused on energy restriction. This study aimed to investigate the effects of excessive HFCS drink intake under energy restriction on developing T2D in early middle-aged mice.

BACKGROUND: High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a dietary sweetener that is used in a substantial portion of food and beverages. Recent evidence has cited dietary HFCS as a risk factor in the development of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and liver disease. This systematic review provides a new evaluation of the potential hepatic and metabolic risks posed by HFCS to inform both clinical practice and public health policy.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of English-language, human studies of adults (≥18 years) with low to no alcohol intake using Covidence. Only quantitative studies that s

This study investigated the ameliorative role of melatonin (MLT) and the effects of a long-term intake of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) on the male reproductive system. Thirty-six male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into 3 groups as follows: Control, HFCS and HFCS + MLT. Testis and epididymal weights were measured. Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities, total testosterone levels, testicular histopathological damage scores were evaluated, and immunohistochemical analyses were performed on testicular tissue. Epididymal weights were si

Sugar intake in the United States has increased by >40 fold since the American Revolution. The health concerns that have been raised about the amounts of sugar that are in the current diet, primarily as beverages, are the subject of this review. Just less than 50% of the added sugars (sugar and high-fructose corn syrup) are found in soft drinks and fruit drinks. The intake of soft drinks has increased 5-fold between 1950 and 2000. Most meta-analyses have shown that the risk of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic syndrome are related to consumption of beverages sweetened wi

Background/Objectives: Hepatic steatosis, characterized by abnormal fat accumulation in the liver, is a major health concern with limited effective treatments. Goat milk whey proteins have demonstrated various therapeutic benefits. This study aimed to evaluate the hepatoprotective effects of goat whey protein hydrolysate (GWPH) on high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS)-induced hepatic steatosis in a murine model. Methods: The GWPH was prepared through enzymatic hydrolysis using Alcalase® and divided into fractions: GWPH03 (<3 kDa), GWPH0310 (3-10 kDa), GWPH1030 (10-30 kDa), and GWPH30 (>30 kDa). Thes

The contribution of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) to metabolic disorder and obesity, independent of high fat, energy-rich diets, is controversial. While high-fat diets are widely accepted as a rodent model of diet-induced obesity (DIO) and metabolic disorder, the value of HFCS alone as a rodent model of DIO is unclear. Impaired dopamine function is associated with obesity and high fat diet, but the effect of HFCS on the dopamine system has not been investigated. The objective of this study was to test the effect of HFCS on weight gain, glucose regulation, and evoked dopamine release using fa

Adolescence is an important period of neurodevelopment often accompanied by escalated consumption of added sweeteners, such as high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Data from our lab suggests that overconsumption of HFCS during adolescence contributes to deficits in learning and motivation, as well as increases in depression which persists in adulthood. The present study aimed to assess whether neuroinflammation contributed to persistent changes in affective behaviors following adolescent HFCS overconsumption. Males but not female Sprague-Dawley rats exposed to HFCS during the adolescent period, ex

BACKGROUND/AIM: The global prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) continues to rise, with non-obese phenotypes particularly common in East Asian populations. Our previous study in male mice demonstrated that the intake of excessive high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) under energy restriction impairs glucose tolerance without inducing obesity. This study aimed to elucidate female-specific mechanisms underlying glucose regulation under similar dietary conditions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Early middle-aged female ICR mice were randomly assigned to either the HFCS group or the control group. In the HFCS g

High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) consumption has been increasingly associated with reproductive dysfunction, yet the potential protective role of natural probiotic products such as kefir remains insufficiently explored. This study investigated the effects of kefir supplementation on HFCS-induced testicular damage in juvenile male Wistar rats. Twenty-four four-week-old rats (≈ 100 g) were maintained under controlled environmental conditions and randomly assigned to four groups: Control, Kefir, HFCS, and HFCS+Kefir. Kefir was administered by gastric gavage at 1 mL/100 g body weight daily, while H

Hazelnut, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory effects, has an important role in a healthy diet. High fructose corn syrup (HFCS), used as a sweetener in ready-made food, beverages; causes hyperlipidemia, fatty liver, cardiovascular system damages; oxidative stress, inflammation play role in these damages. Based on these data, we aimed to examine liver and heart damage caused by HFCS in rats and to investigate possible role of hazelnut enriched food in preventing/improving these damages. During this process, weight change, food, liquid consumption were recorded. Biochemical parameters were measured w

With the growth of the food industry, fructose, the intake of which increases with food, causes obesity and metabolic syndrome. Kidney damage may develop from metabolic syndrome. Selenium (Se) participates in the structure of antioxidant enzymes and has a medicinal effect. In this work, the protective impact of Se on kidney damage produced by high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) via endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress was examined. The study comprised four groups, each consisting of ten experimental animals: control, HFCS (20%-HFCS), HFCS (20%-HFCS), + Se (0.3 mg/kg/day/po), and Se (0.3 mg/kg/day/po)

The aims of this study were to determine whether combining features of a western lifestyle in mice with trans fats in a high-fat diet, high-fructose corn syrup in the water, and interventions designed to promote sedentary behavior would cause the hepatic histopathological and metabolic abnormalities that characterize nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Male C57BL/6 mice fed ad libitum high-fat chow containing trans fats (partially hydrogenated vegetable oil) and relevant amounts of a high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) equivalent for 1-16 wk were compared with mice fed standard chow or mice with

Stunting, or impaired child growth due to poor nutrition and infections, is characterized by a low height-for-age and affects 48%-56% of school-aged children worldwide. It is associated with later weight gain and chronic diseases. The gut microbiome in undernourished children may increase obesity risk if they are exposed to high-calorie environments. To investigate this, we assessed whether the intestinal microbiome of stunted children elevates obesity risk upon exposure to an obesogenic environment. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) was performed using pooled stools from healthy (n = 6)

(1) Background: Clinical results on the effects of excess sugar consumption on insulin sensitivity are conflicting, possibly due to differences in sugar type and the insulin sensitivity index (ISI) assessed. Therefore, we compared the effects of consuming four different sugars on insulin sensitivity indices derived from oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT). (2) Methods: Young adults consumed fructose-, glucose-, high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS)-, sucrose-, or aspartame-sweetened beverages (SB) for 2 weeks. Participants underwent OGTT before and at the end of the intervention. Fasting glucose and

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) consumption may lead to oxidative stress-related neurodegeneration. Dexpanthenol (DEX), with antioxidant and cytoprotective properties, may exert neuroprotective effects; however, its efficacy against HFCS-induced neurotoxicity remains unclear. This study examined DEX's effects against HFCS-induced neurotoxicity across multiple pathways. Rats were randomly assigned to four experimental groups (n = 8, for each group): Control, HFCS (20%, for 8 weeks), HFCS + DEX (500 mg/kg), and DEX. Brain tissues were analyzed by histopathology, immunohistochemistry (tumor necro
