The case is reported of a woman aged 26 with painful swelling of the left cervical lymph nodes. These symptoms were preceded by paresthesias and pain at the left side of her body, especially the left leg and the left arm. A lymph node biopsy revealed the diagnosis of histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis (Kikuchi's disease). Physical examination and laboratory data showed no other abnormalities. The patient recovered soon without any therapy. The morphological findings are described and a review of the literature is given.

We report a typical case of histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis (Kikuchi's disease). To our knowledge this is the first reported case in Denmark. Histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis is a benign self-limiting disorder, which mainly involves the cervical lymph nodes. The disease commonly affects young women of Asian origin, but it is seen more and more often in other populations. Clinically and histologically it can be misdiagnosed as malignant lymphoma. The etiology is unknown.

A 14-year-old girl was hospitalized with fever, jaundice, vomiting and right sided abdominal pain. A laparotomy was performed because of muscular defence and ascites. There was a mass of enlarged red and blue colored lymph nodes in the mesentery of the lower ileum loop. The histologic diagnosis of HNL without granulocytic infiltration was made. A septic-toxic shock developed after surgery. Respiratory insufficiency necessitated the use of a respirator, and acute renal failure with oliguria made hemodialysis necessary. The dramatic clinical course of the illness and the localization of the affe

About 50 cases of histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis without granulocytic infiltration were published till now. The authors describe the case of a 19-year-old patient with the right ear and the right ring finger bitten by squirrel about 40-50 days before the appearance of an axillary homolateral painful lymphadenomegaly and fever. Histopathologic examination of excised lymph nodes showed areas of necrosis, necrobiosis and nodular histiocytosis. Histiocytes were dystrophic or showed evidence of macrophagy. Problems referring to morphogenesis and etiology are discussed.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mode of presentation, cytologic features of the plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDC), and the expression of CD123 and its significance in Kikuchi's disease.
METHODS: CD123 expression was evaluated by EliVision immunohistochemical staining in formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded tissues from 30 cases of Kikuchi's disease, 5 cases of T cell lymphoma, 10 cases of reactive lymphoid hyperplasia and 10 cases of chronic tonsillitis.
RESULTS: Clusters of CD123 positive PDC were observed in Kikuchi's disease (28 of 30 cases, 93.3%) and the staining intensity was more promi

BACKGROUND: Acute Myelomonocytic Leukemia (AMML) is a rare malignant neoplasm that is classified as a subtype of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). In the case described herein, the initial pathology results from a lymph node biopsy leaned towards Histiocytic Necrotizing Lymphadenitis, but ultimately, immunohistochemistry of the lymph node confirmed the diagnosis of Acute Myelomonocytic Leukemia.
METHODS: Cervical lymph node biopsy.
RESULTS: In this case, the initial pathological diagnosis after cervical lymph node biopsy favored histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis. However, immunohistochemical

UNLABELLED: Due to its nonspecific clinical characteristics, histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis (HNL) is often misdiagnosed as a suppurative cervical lymphadenitis and lymphoma. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of HNL in pediatric patients. We retrospectively identified 61 patients with histopathologically confirmed HNL. Clinical and laboratory data, including age, sex, clinical manifestations, laboratory investigations, histological discoveries, treatment, and outcomes, were collected from the medical records to determine associations with extracervical ly

We report a case of Kikuchi's disease (histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis) in a 22-year-old Japanese man who presented with cervical and axillary lymphadenopathy and who developed edema of lips with desquamation and erosions and transient indurated erythematous papules on the face, neck and upper extremities. A lymph node biopsy specimen showed the typical necrotizing lymphadenitis of Kikuchi's disease. A skin biopsy specimen showed a dense, lymphohistiocytic, superficial, deep perivascular, and interstitial infiltrate, papillary dermal edema, and abundant nuclear debris with a conspicuous

The lymph nodes from 10 cases of histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis (HNL), 3 cases of necrotizing lymphadenitis with follicular hyperplasia (NLFH), and 11 cases of various types of lymphadenitis (abscess-forming, tuberculous, Piringer-type, "viral", and nonspecific lymphadenitides) were comparatively studied. The NLFH, clinically representing a milder form of collagen disease, showed necrotizing lesions similar to those of HNL but with follicular hyperplasia, more plasma cells, and scattered neutrophils; the latter features closely resemble those of some lymph nodes in systemic lupus erythe

Kikuchi's histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis (Kikuchi's disease) is a histologically alarming but self-limiting lesion typically affecting the cervical lymph nodes of young adults. The authors report the first case of fatality occurring during the active phase of Kikuchi's disease. The 38-year-old patient presented with fever and generalized lymphadenopathy. During hospitalization, he developed abrupt onset of heart failure and died. Postmortem examination revealed enlarged lymph nodes all over the body showing typical histologic changes of Kikuchi's disease, but there was no encroachment o

OBJECTIVE: To investigate and analyze the clinical features in patients with histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis (HNL).
METHODS: A total of 68 HNL patients at our hospital between the years of 1999 to 2009 were enrolled. The clinical data were collected from the hospital records and the relevant literature was reviewed.
RESULTS: HNL mainly affected young people with an average age of (19 ± 13) years old and a female-to-male ratio of 1:1. All patients had lymphadenectasis. And 95.6% patients (65 cases) were feverish and 36.8% patients (25 cases) had mild hepatosplenomegaly; 25.0% (17 cases)

Kikuchi's disease (histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis) is a self-limited disease of unknown cause. The disease often presents with persistently intermittent fever and enlarged cervical lymph nodes. It usually occurs in adult group and is unresponsive to antibiotic therapy. The diagnosis can be confirmed by histopathological findings of lymph node in open biopsy. We report a pediatric case of Kikuchi's disease in an 8-year-8-month-old school-age boy with generalized lymphadenopathy. He was hospitalized under the impression of fever of unknown origin. A diagnosis of Kikuchi's disease was made

OBJECTIVE: In this report we explore the relationship between Kikuchi's necrotizing lymphadenitis (Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease, KD) and a leaky silicone breast implant.
PATIENT: The simultaneous occurrence of KD and silicone lymphadenopathy in an axillary lymph node of a patient with a leaking silicone breast implant is reported. Since both KD and silicone implants have been implicated in autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus, serologic tests for antinuclear antibodies and rheumatoid factor were performed.
RESULTS: Axillary lymph nodes showed both silicone lymphadenopathy,

The cervical lymph nodes of 27 patients with histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis (HNL) were examined, as were those of 9 patients with tuberculous lymphadenitis (Tb), 10 with reactive paracortical hyperplasia (RPH), and 10 with nonspecific lymphadenitis (NSL). Southern blot analysis, the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and in situ hybridization were use to locate the human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6) genome. Southern blot analysis showed that all cases were negative for HHV-6 genomes, although all but one HNL case expressed HHV-6 genome using PCR. On in situ hybridization all 10 HNL cases, 6 of t

Histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis (HNL) is a rare condition presenting with lymphadenopathy and fever. We report a case of a 61-year-old male with a history of perianal abscess surgery who developed HNL postoperatively. The patient was treated with corticosteroids, leading to resolution of fever and alleviation of symptoms. This case emphasizes the need for clinical vigilance for HNL in patients with a history of perianal abscess surgery and postoperative fever with lymph node enlargement.

We describe a case of necrotizing histiocytic lymphadenitis or Kikuchi and Fujimoto disease, a rare lymphadenopathy of unknown etiology usually striking young women. It was formerly described in Japan, and subsequently in other countries and in Italy as an anatomo-clinical entity. The disease has a favourable prognosis, therefore it has to be considered differently from other lymphadenopathies with severe prognosis whose anatomo-pathological differential features were analyzed by the authors. The case here observed differs from other cases described in literature because of the presence of a p
