Seven cases of malignant fibrous histiocytoma are reported. Two patients had tumour involving the scrotum and small-gut mesentery, which are unusual primary sites, while three others with pulmonary metastases are alive five years since the appearance of these metastases. A review of the histogenesis, biological behaviour and the treatment of these uncommon tumours suggests that the prognosis is good even in the presence of advanced local or metastatic disease. OBJECTIVE: To describe a rare case of intrascrotal malignant fibrous histiocytoma.
METHODS: A 90-year-old man presented with a scrotal mass which he had noted during the past few months. A scrotal tumor, 8 cm in diameter, was detected on physical evaluation. Tumor resection was decided due to the patient's good general condition despite his age.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma is the commonest soft tissue sarcoma of adults. The soft tissue of the extremities is the commonest primary site of malignant fibrous histiocytoma. Five cases of malignant fibrous histiocytoma located in the retroperitoneum are reported. Paraneoplastic syndrome, abdominal mass, tendency to local recurrence, laborious therapy and poor prognosis are the clinical characteristics of this tumor. Accuracy of actual diagnosis is evaluated and pathological features are analyzed.

Primary malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) of the central nervous system (CNS) is uncommon. We report cases of two young patients of MFH arising from the cranial meninges and involving the adjacent skull and scalp. There was infiltration of the brain in one case. Both the lesions were excised and primary scalp repair was performed.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) cases are classified within the group of nonclassified sarcomas. The etiopathogenesis is unclear; however, MFH commonly develops in scar tissue and in areas exposed to radiation. MFH is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in adults and may be borne in the lungs, chest wall, mediastinum, or other tissues. Primary MFH of the lung constitutes less than 0.2% of all pulmonary neoplasms; thus, an optimal treatment strategy has not yet been elucidated. We aimed to report a case of MFH of the lung with subsequent treatment administration.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is one of the most common adult soft tissue sarcomas. MFH is very aggressive and is most often found in the extremities and the retroperitoneum, but it can manifest at other sites. Though the lungs are the most common sites of metastasis, they rarely present there as a primary tumor. Our report describes a rare case of a primary MFH tumor in the lung. Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is an aggressive soft-tissue sarcoma that most commonly occurs in the skeletal muscle of the extremities or retroperitoneum of adults. Although the majority of MFH is located beneath the fascia, the tumor occasionally occurs in the subcutaneous tissue. MFH rarely occurs in children and the disease course, prognosis, and outcome in younger patients has not been well described. We report a case of cutaneous MFH presenting on the thigh of a 12-year-old boy.

A case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma resembling mycetoma is reported. We describe a patient with a draining purulent mass and localized swelling of the left ankle. The lesion's ulcerated surface produced purulent material that contained black "granules" resembling those seen in mycetoma. Cultures revealed a heavy growth of Staphylococcus aureus and no growth of fungi. Treatment with oral antibiotics resulted in resolution of the infection with persistence of the mass. Seven cases of extraretroperitoneal abdominal malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) are reported. The anatomic distribution was as follows: liver (2 cases), spleen with gastric and pancreatic involvement (1 case), mesentery (1 case), right mesocolon (1 case), left mesocolon (1 case), and urachus (1 case). These bulky lesions were often extensively necrotic; calcifications were seen in 2 cases. All 7 cases were investigated by ultrasonography (US) and computed tomography (CT). Barium studies were performed in 4 cases, and angiography in 3 cases.

Numerous cytological variants of malignant melanoma (MM) exist. We report two cases of MM resembling malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH). Pathologists should be aware of this variant. Possible pitfalls that could lead to an incorrect diagnosis are discussed.

Most soft tissue sarcomas are malignant tumors of the mesodermal tissue of the head and neck, trunk, retroperitoneum or extremities, although neurosarcomas and primitive neuroectodermal tumors are of ectodermal origin. Soft-tissue sarcomas of the upper extremity constitute 14% of all soft-tissue sarcomas, they are one third as common as those of the lower extremity. The authors report two cases of retroperitoneal malignant fibrous histiocytoma which is a rare tumour (200 cases reported in the literature). The clinical and radiological signs are nonspecific and the diagnosis is based on histological examination of the specimen. Surgical resection must be as complete as possible to prevent local recurrence. The efficacy of adjuvant therapy has not been demonstrated due to the low incidence of this tumour.

Clinical description of a case of FMH in a 77 years-old man, heavy smoker and diabetic. At the beginning its appearance mimic a small polyp of the middle third of the right vocal cord. The patient refused any treatment at first, but one year later, when seen again in the office, a mass covering-up the right hemilarynx was detected and a total laryngectomy was advised and done. In spite of the correctness of the follow-up in the next six months, the unhappy commit suicide.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) of the conjunctiva is an extremely rare tumour, and only three previous cases have been reported. We describe two patients with MFH of the conjunctiva: a 58-year-old white male with epibulbar tumour who had exenteration and is alive after five years' follow-up, and a 3 1/2-year-old African girl with xeroderma pigmentosum and an MFH of her right eye conjunctiva, the first reported case of this association. The characteristics and the methods of diagnosis of MFH are discussed.
