Laryngeal trauma. A historical comparison of treatment methods.

In the last 20 years, several authors have reported their experience with the treatment of laryngeal trauma. Over 200 cases of laryngeal trauma in the literature were reviewed and compared with the experience at Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, NY. Special attention was paid to surgical v medical treatment, type and duration of stenting techniques, and time interval between injury and surgery. Results were compared in terms of voice and airway status. If surgical treatment is not required, the results for airway and voice are generally excellent. In those cases requiring open surgical treatme

Collective trauma in the wake of historical environmental contamination.

Chronic environmental contamination is a prevalent environmental justice issue. Few studies have considered that such exposures may be a source of collective trauma - shared negative mental health outcomes that persist across decades and generations. An observational survey (N = 363) in the predominantly low-income Latine community on the Tucson International Airport Area Superfund site used community-engaged door-to-door and social media recruitment to compare those potentially exposed to historical contamination to non-exposed residents on mental health outcomes. Potential mediators (e.g. he

Corpus Hippocraticum: historical source of treatment of craniomaxillofacial trauma.

The works of Hippocrates known in the Western World as the Corpus Hippocraticum have dominated medical thought and surgical practice for centuries. A substantial part of the Hippocratic Collection is dedicated to the description of injuries pertinent to Cranio-maxillofacial surgery and their management. Hippocrates has reached this level of surgical skill despite the limited pre-recorded knowledge and the restriction of post-mortem dissections.

Healing history? Aboriginal healing, historical trauma, and personal responsibility.

What can an exploration of contemporary Aboriginal healing programs such as those offered in Canadian prisons and urban clinics tell us about the importance of history in understanding social and psychological pathology, and more significantly the salience of the concept of "historical trauma"? The form of Aboriginal "healing" that has emerged in recent decades to become dominant in many parts of the country is itself a reflection of historical processes and efforts to ameliorate the consequences of what is today often termed "historical trauma." In other words, contemporary notions of "healin

Mexican Americans and historical trauma theory: a theoretical perspective.

The observed intergenerational stress response to negative social and historical events is at the core of historical trauma theory, which has been applied to Native Americans, African Americans, and Pacific Islanders, among others. The historical and social experiences of the Mexican population living in the United States have many parallels that lend themselves to the application of historical trauma theory to macro-level and micro-level influences on access to health care, physical health status, and mental health status, including substance abuse among Mexican Americans. A historical vignette (19). An orbital trauma in the 16th century.

An orbital trauma in the 16th century. On 30 June 1559, during a jousting tournament, King Henri II of France incurred an injury to the eye from a shattered lance, dying ten days later. Trepanation was discussed briefly before being rejected. The autopsy on the King confirmed that it would have been justified. Even though there was no skull fracture, there was a secondary rebound trauma resulting in a subdural haematoma in the occipital area. This paper examines why the trepanation option was rejected (Figure 1).

The healing of our people: substance abuse and historical trauma.

For the past two decades, one of the authors (Robert Morgan) has been involved in the development and implementation of culturally based outpatient, inpatient, and aftercare programs for Alaskan native and American-Indian populations in Alaska. After years of observation, it was concluded that the best efforts of our clinicians were inadequate to the task at hand, i.e., that of resolving the social and physical ills that have ravaged the Alaskan peoples since the occupation. Morgan and others sought to create a new model of diagnosis and treatment that combined the cultural strengths of the pe

Comparing premodern melancholy/mania and modern trauma: an argument in favor of historical experiences of trauma.

Historians and psychiatrists have repeatedly looked to both real and imagined individuals of the past, like Achilles and Samuel Pepys, and found evidence that they were suffering from symptoms of trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder. The assumptions that allow such historical "diagnoses" have, however, recently been called into question by philosophers such as lan Hacking, anthropologists like Allan Young and psychiatrists such as Patrick Bracken. These scholars have all suggested in various ways that experiences of trauma could not have occurred until the diagnosis of trauma and its sympt

OBJECTIVES: To test the relationships among historical trauma, perceived discrimination, and substance use (cigarette, alcohol, and marijuana use) among Native Hawaiians. METHODS: Cross sectional self-report data were collected online from 128 Native Hawaiian community college students (M age = 27.5; SD = 9.5; 65% Women). Hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling. RESULTS: Historical trauma had 2 paths to substance use: an indirect path to higher substance use through higher perceived discrimination and a direct path to lower substance use. CONCLUSIONS: Thoughts, knowledge,

Spine Trauma Classifications: Historical, Current, and Emerging Perspectives for Radiologists.

The spine serves as a protective, load-bearing, and stabilizing axis for the body. Trauma can cause significant damage to spinal structures, potentially resulting in severe neurological dysfunction and disabilities such as paraplegia or quadriplegia. Early and accurate diagnosis of these injuries is important, with computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging being important for recognizing these injuries and guiding timely treatment to minimize disability. Radiologists play a critical role in assessing spine trauma to determine stability, which informs the need for nonoperative or opera

Historicizing historical trauma theory: troubling the trans-generational transmission paradigm.

The premise that "trauma" is transmitted across generations is central to the historical trauma discourse currently circulating in indigenous communities and professional networks in Canada. Historical trauma may be understood as the offspring of two older and apparently antithetical discourses: Native healing, and colonial professional critiques of indigenous family life. While the former has maintained a therapeutic focus on restoring intergenerational social relations, the latter has pathologized indigenous parenting and child-rearing practices. The emergence of historical trauma marks a gl

Consequences of repetitive head trauma: a historical reappraisal of Hobey Baker.

BACKGROUND: Hobart "Hobey" Baker (1892-1918) is one of the most celebrated amateur athletes in American history. The cause of his death in a plane crash at the end of WWI has been the subject of a longstanding debate. Contemporary scientific literature links repetitive head impacts (RHIs) with neurobehavioral dysregulation and impaired judgment. HYPOTHESIS: Hobey Baker's exposure to repetitive head trauma impaired his judgment preceding and during his fatal final flight. DESIGN SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: This historical narrative analyzed biographical accounts of Baker's life, supplemented by

The Role of Ligation in Portal Vein Trauma: A Historical Case Study.

Traumatic portal vein injuries are often fatal, with historical mortality rates as high as 71%. This report examines the 1894 assassination of French President Sadi Carnot as an early case of unsuccessful surgical management of a portal vein injury. After sustaining a stab wound to the upper abdomen, Carnot underwent emergent laparotomy but died within hours. Autopsy later revealed an unrecognized laceration of the right branch of the portal vein. This assassination deeply influenced Dr Alexis Carrel, who later developed pioneering vascular anastomosis techniques. We subsequently trace the his

A historical review of trauma-related diagnoses to reconsider the heterogeneity of PTSD.

Based on the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, there are 636,120 ways for an individual to qualify for a diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (Galatzer-Levy & Bryant, 2013). To unravel this heterogeneity, we examine the historical trajectory of trauma-related diagnoses. Our review addresses four traumas (i.e., combat, natural disaster, life-threatening accident and sexual assault) that have contributed the most to conceptual models of PTSD. Although these trauma types are all subsumed under the same diagnostic label, our literature review in

Historical trauma as a contributor to postpartum depression among Indigenous mothers.

INTRODUCTION: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant public health concern. Moreover, research suggests that American Indian/Alaskan Native (AI/AN) mothers experience postpartum depression at higher rates than the general population (Heck, 2021; Ko et al., 2017). As a result, understanding the potential causes of higher PPD among AI/AN mothers is helpful to the development of better interventions to reduce PPD among AI/AN mothers. A potential cause of higher PPD symptoms among AI/AN mothers is historical trauma (HT). HT refers to the cumulative psychological wounding experienced across g

Abusive Head Trauma: Historical and Current Perspectives of a Complex Diagnosis.

Abusive Head Trauma (AHT) results in more child fatalities than any other form of physical abuse and is associated with significant risk of morbidity for survivors. The diagnosis of AHT is made like any other complex medical condition and is based on a constellation of findings within the context of a reported history provided by the patient's caregiver(s). A standardized process with careful consideration of a differential diagnosis and utilization of a multidisciplinary team is essential. This article explores the history of the diagnosis of AHT, reviews the scientific basis for potential me

Parenting in the context of historical childhood trauma: An interpretive meta-synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Parents with childhood trauma histories are more likely to experience difficulties with child-rearing. The literature often pathologizes the parenting behaviours of parents with abuse histories, meaning strengths sometimes are neglected OBJECTIVE: This article presents a meta-synthesis of qualitative studies into the parenting experiences of survivors of childhood abuse. This analysis was undertaken to develop awareness of the experiences of this population, with the hope findings would be of use to policy-makers and professionals supporting parents and their children.
