Hoarding is a mental disorder having its onset at young age and often worsening with age, manifested as a need of storing up goods to an extent that significantly hampers everyday life. In the light of conducted studies, at least 1 to 2% of the adult population suffers from hoarding. Upon increased compulsive hoarding with aging, problems arise especially for those living alone. Hoarding differs from obsessive-compulsive disorder in its course and treatment response. Treatment of hoarding disorder is based on methods applied in cognitive behavior therapy.

BACKGROUND: Compulsive hoarding is defined, in most cases, as 'the inability to resist the urge to acquire possessions and to discard possessions'. Compulsive hoarding has an early age onset, chronic course and significant levels of comorbidity and morbidity.
OBJECTIVE: This article outlines the essential features of compulsive hoarding occurring as a symptom factor of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and alludes to hoarding co-occurring in a range of disorders other than OCD. A test screening for compulsive hoarding is provided.
DISCUSSION: Compulsive hoarding occurs in illnesses other t

Hoarding is a disorder that has only recently begun to be understood by researchers and clinicians. This disorder has been examined from a biopsychosocial perspective and has features that overlap with obsessive-compulsive disorder as well as some unique characteristics. Hoarding disorder is widespread and maybe related to the evolution of collecting and storing resources among humans and other animals. While there have been a number of non-analytic theories related to hoarding and its treatment, psychoanalytic thinkers have rarely described the disorder or explored its underlying psychodynami

OBJECTIVE: Recent evidence suggests that avoiding waste may be a prominent motive to save in hoarding disorder. Such beliefs are reminiscent of scrupulosity obsessions in OCD. This paper reports on three studies examining scrupulosity-like beliefs in hoarding and the development and validation of a measure of material scrupulosity.
METHODS: Study one examined the reliability and validity of a measure of material scrupulosity (MOMS) and its relationship to hoarding in a college student sample, as well as the relationship between hoarding and OCD-base scrupulosity. Study 2 examined the psychome

BACKGROUND: The longitudinal course of hoarding behavior (HB) in children and adolescents, as well as the predictors of its outcome, remain unknown. This prospective longitudinal study aims to evaluate the four-year course of HB and identify predictors of progression to hoarding disorder (HD) and the persistence of hoarding symptoms. METHODS: Children and adolescents with HB underwent a clinical assessment after a four-year follow-up period. The assessment included a one-on-one psychiatric interview, an HD clinical interview based on DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, Schedule for Affective Disorders

Although hoarding symptoms are reported to begin in childhood and adolescence, the true prevalence of the disorder in this age group is unknown. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of hoarding disorder (HD) in children and adolescents. The present study was planned as a two-stage epidemiological research. In the first stage, the Children's Saving Inventory (CSI) and informed consent forms were delivered to a group of students' parents. In the second stage, one-on-one psychiatric interviews with a physician were planned with the families and children who had hoarding behavior (HB), as de

BACKGROUND: Hoarding is currently categorized as a symptom of both obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. However, hoarding has also been documented in association with other psychiatric disorders, raising questions about the classification, psychobiology and treatment of these symptoms. This paper reviews the literature on hoarding.
METHOD: A computerized literature search was done using the MEDLINE database. Relevant references were collated and were used to obtain additional literature on hoarding behavior.
RESULTS: Although hoarding may meet DS

Hoarding and squalor are complex conditions with a range of physical and mental comorbidities GPs play a key role in identifying people who experience these conditions, screening for safety risks, referral to specialist services and encouraging people to accept treatment and ongoing monitoring. Treatment for contributing and comorbid conditions should be optimised, with the help of specialist services when required. Medicines should be reviewed and adherence confirmed For moderate to severe hoarding and squalor, referral to specialist psychiatry, geriatrics and allied health services is recomm

Hoarding has become increasingly prominent in clinical practice and popular culture in recent years, giving rise to extensive research and commentary. Critical responses in the social sciences have criticised the cultural assumptions built in to the construct of 'hoarding disorder' and expressed fears that it may generate stigma outweighing its benefits; however, few of these studies have engaged directly with 'hoarders' themselves. This paper reports on in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 10 individuals living in England, who received assessment and intervention for hoarding from Social

The "security hypothesis" suggests food hoarding by rats serves to preempt attack and therefore might be motivated by "anxiety". The "object value" hypothesis suggests rats hoard objects that they perceive as valuable as related to some state or need. These hypotheses were evaluated with the anxiolytic drug diazepam, which is purported to both decrease anxiety and increase motivation to eat, and which accordingly either may decrease or increase hoarding. Using a new hoarding paradigm, diazepam (Valium: 0.25-5 mg/kg), was found to produce a dose-related reduction in hoarding that was dependent

A case study of hoarding in a woman with anorexia nervosa is reported. Obsessional and borderline personality characteristics, exacerbated by starvation, may be determinants of hoarding in anorexia nervosa.

Having attenuated visualization has been proposed to confer vulnerability to hoarding, although some studies have found no differences in visualizing between individuals who hoard and controls. To clarify this, we investigated the presence and severity of hoarding symptoms and beliefs in a specialist sample of aphantasics (those without imagery) and hyperphantasics (those with extremely vivid imagery), compared to mid-range/typical visualizers, while controlling for confounds (i.e., age and depression levels). Bayesian analysis revealed stronger evidence favouring a lack of difference in hoard

Hoarding disorder is a relatively common psychiatric condition with a variety of adverse social and individual consequences. People with hoarding report high rates of loneliness and interpersonal dysfunction; however, little is known about how people with hoarding experience and function within their broader social systems (e.g., neighborhoods and communities). Neighborhood experience mediates the effects of one's environment on mental health outcomes, suggesting that it may be relevant to psychiatric disorders such as hoarding disorder that are accompanied by social dysfunction. Using the All

Almost everyone owns things that would be difficult to throw away - for instance a favorite picture, a keepsake from childhood or an item of daily use that has been valued over the years. In individuals suffering from pathological hoarding, the gathering of items reaches a pathological extent. This article presents typical symptoms of this mental disorder, maintaining factors and a psychotherapeutic treatment.

Hoarding disorder is a relatively new diagnosis in the DSM-5, only just included in the most recent edition. The disorder has piqued the interest of many in the community, in part because of the hit TV show called "Hoarders." Although there is interest, there continues to be relatively few research studies into the causes, treatment, and management of this disorder specifically in adolescences. Yet, in the research that has been published, it often sites the disorder first appearing in adolescents. This paper will discuss the following elements of adolescent hoarding disorder: The potential et

While the hoarding of physical objects has been extensively explored, there is little research relating to the hoarding of digital materials. The research that has been conducted suggests that digital hoarding (DH) behaviours appear to have some similarities with physical hoarding (PH) behaviours, and can be just as psychologically distressing. This study uses the framework of the cognitive behavioural model of PH to explore DH behaviours, including possible similarities regarding emotional attachment to digital possessions, and possible links with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and indec

Hoarding disorder (HD) is a newly listed disease in the new category of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders in the DSM-5. Patients with HD find it difficult to discard possessions regardless of their actual value and to organize those things. As a result, the possessions overflow the living space and hinder living functions. Though the hoarding symptom had been regarded as a subtype of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) to date, recent studies have revealed many differences in clinical characteristics, including onset, course, degree of insight, and treatment responses, between hoardin

OBJECTIVE: This study determined the clinical characteristics of late-life hoarding disorder (HD).
METHODS: Older adults (age 60 and older) with HD (n = 55) and without psychiatric diagnoses (n = 39) were compared on psychiatric, functional, cognitive, and health-related measures. Associations between age and clinical characteristics in a large sample of mixed age (n = 210; age range: 20-78) participants with HD were also determined.
RESULTS: Individuals with late-life HD were characterized by substantial impairments in psychiatric, functional, cognitive, and medical status. Health risks (e.
