Neighborhood experience and hoarding disorder.

Hoarding disorder is a relatively common psychiatric condition with a variety of adverse social and individual consequences. People with hoarding report high rates of loneliness and interpersonal dysfunction; however, little is known about how people with hoarding experience and function within their broader social systems (e.g., neighborhoods and communities). Neighborhood experience mediates the effects of one's environment on mental health outcomes, suggesting that it may be relevant to psychiatric disorders such as hoarding disorder that are accompanied by social dysfunction. Identifying adolescents with hoarding disorder.

Hoarding disorder is a relatively new diagnosis in the DSM-5, only just included in the most recent edition. The disorder has piqued the interest of many in the community, in part because of the hit TV show called "Hoarders." Although there is interest, there continues to be relatively few research studies into the causes, treatment, and management of this disorder specifically in adolescences. Yet, in the research that has been published, it often sites the disorder first appearing in adolescents. This paper will discuss the following elements of adolescent hoarding disorder: The potential et

Diagnostic progression to hoarding disorder: the longitudinal course of hoarding behavior.

BACKGROUND: The longitudinal course of hoarding behavior (HB) in children and adolescents, as well as the predictors of its outcome, remain unknown. This prospective longitudinal study aims to evaluate the four-year course of HB and identify predictors of progression to hoarding disorder (HD) and the persistence of hoarding symptoms. METHODS: Children and adolescents with HB underwent a clinical assessment after a four-year follow-up period. The assessment included a one-on-one psychiatric interview, an HD clinical interview based on DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, Schedule for Affective Disorders

Pathophysiology and treatment of hoarding disorder.

Hoarding disorder (HD) is a newly listed disease in the new category of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders in the DSM-5. Patients with HD find it difficult to discard possessions regardless of their actual value and to organize those things. As a result, the possessions overflow the living space and hinder living functions. Though the hoarding symptom had been regarded as a subtype of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) to date, recent studies have revealed many differences in clinical characteristics, including onset, course, degree of insight, and treatment responses, between hoardin

Subjective cognitive function in hoarding disorder.

The aim of the present study was to examine subjective cognitive impairment among adult patients with hoarding disorder (HD). Eighty-three patients with HD and 46 age- and gender-matched healthy control (HC) participants received a diagnostic interview and completed measures of subjective cognitive functioning and motivations for saving behavior, as well as measures of hoarding severity, depression, anxiety, stress, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms. The HD group reported more impairment than did the HC group in domains of memory, distractibility, blunders, memory for names, and

Prevalence and correlates of hoarding behavior and hoarding disorder in children and adolescents.

Although hoarding symptoms are reported to begin in childhood and adolescence, the true prevalence of the disorder in this age group is unknown. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of hoarding disorder (HD) in children and adolescents. The present study was planned as a two-stage epidemiological research. In the first stage, the Children's Saving Inventory (CSI) and informed consent forms were delivered to a group of students' parents. In the second stage, one-on-one psychiatric interviews with a physician were planned with the families and children who had hoarding behavior (HB), as de

Editorial: Hoarding and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Hoarding disorder is more than surplus clothes and belongings that could be remedied by a visit from Marie Kondo (https://konmari.com). It is officially recognized as a distinct condition in DSM-5 and placed under obsessive-compulsive conditions.1 Before the designation in DSM-5, hoarding was regarded as a diagnostic element in obsessive-compulsive personality disorder or a symptom nested within obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).2 In DSM-5, hoarding disorder is defined by great reluctance or outright refusal to discard belongings-including articles of limited value. Individuals with hoarding

Abnormal white matter structure in hoarding disorder.

Although preliminary neuroimaging research suggests that patients with hoarding disorder (HD) show widespread abnormal task-related activity in the brain, there has been no research on alterations in the white matter tracts in these patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of the major white matter tracts in patients with HD. Tract-based spatial statistics were used to search for white matter tract abnormalities throughout the brain in 25 patients with HD and 36 healthy controls. Post hoc analysis of regions of interest was performed to detect correlations with cl

Psychopathological Comorbid Symptoms in Animal Hoarding Disorder.

The main goal of this research is to describe the psychopathological symptoms comorbid to animal hoarding disorder. This is a cross-sectional study with a sample of a 33 individuals sample diagnosed with animal hoarding disorder. For data collection, a Sociodemographic Data questionnaire and a Semi-Structured Clinical Interview were used, based on the DSM-5 Level 1 Cross-Cutting Symptom Measure. The sample consisted of 24 women (72.7%) and 9 men (27.30%), with a prevalence of 64% of the elderly. The mean number of self-reported animals per residence was 41.12 (DP = 24.41), totaling 1357 animal

Object attachment and emotions in hoarding disorder.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Object attachment is a core feature of hoarding disorder (HD), but it also occurs in people without HD. It is therefore critical to clarify differences between normal and abnormal object attachment. Although previous studies show that HD is associated with high emotional reactivity, no study to date has examined the nature and intensity of discrete emotions in people with and without HD in relation to object attachment. METHOD: Individuals with HD (n = 93) and matched controls (n = 93) were recruited via MTurk. They identified and described a possession of low monetary va

Cognitive impairment in hoarding disorder: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: In the present study, we aimed to perform a systematic review evaluating the cognitive performance of patients with hoarding disorder (HD) compared with controls. We hypothesized that HD patients would present greater cognitive impairment than controls. METHODS: A systematic search of the literature using the electronic databases MEDLINE, SCOPUS, and LILACS was conducted on May 2020, with no date limit. The search terms were "hoarding disorder," "cognition," "neuropsychology," "cognitive impairment," and "cognitive deficit." We included original studies assessing cognitive function

A Case of Coexisting Depression and Hoarding Disorder.

A hoarding disorder manifests as difficulty in discarding or letting go of items irrespective of their actual worth and persistent acquisition of items. Increasing numbers of possessions clutter active living spaces to the point where their intended use is no longer possible, leading to significant functional impairment. In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V), it is classified under the category obsessive-compulsive and related disorders. First considered to be a part of obsessive-compulsive disorder, compulsive hoarding was subsequently classified as an additiona

Diogenes Syndrome: Identification and Distinction from Hoarding Disorder.

"Severe domestic squalor" or Diogenes syndrome is characterised by extreme self-neglect of environment, health, and hygiene, excessive hoarding, squalor, social withdrawal, and a distinct lack of concern or shame regarding one's living condition. This report presents a case of a 51-year-old male admitted to the hospital psychiatric ward following the police removing him from his home. Police officers attended the man's home following the alarm being raised by his stepfather that he had not been seen or heard from in 3 weeks. His home was covered in several feet of rubbish, rotting food, and de

Hoarding Disorder: Development in Conceptualization, Intervention, and Evaluation.

Hoarding disorder is characterized by difficulty parting with possessions because of strong urges to save the items. Difficulty discarding often includes items others consider to be of little value and results in accumulation of a large number of possessions that clutter the home. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with exposure and response prevention and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor medications traditionally used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder are generally not efficacious for people with hoarding problems. A specialized CBT approach for hoarding has shown progress in reach

Clinical characteristics of hoarding disorder in Japanese patients.

Previous studies have reported clinical characteristics of hoarding disorder (HD), such as early onset, a chronic course, familiality, high unmarried rate, and high rates of comorbidities. However, clinical research targeting Japanese HD patients has been very limited. As a result, there is a low recognition of HD in Japan, leading to insufficient evaluation and treatment of Japanese HD patients. The aim of the current study was to delineate the clinical characteristics of Japanese HD patients. Thirty HD patients, 20 obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients, and 21 normal controls (NC) wer
