Larval character evolution in Holometabola (Insecta).

Larvae, a novel type of immature stage, are a crucial innovation of the Holometabola. Larval features therefore provide key evidence for reconstructing evolutionary transformations in this megadiverse group. Here we present the first formal reconstruction of larval character evolution, using maximum parsimony and Bayesian ancestral-state reconstruction. Our analyses are based on an updated matrix of 88 larval characters and a phylogenetic topology assembled from published transcriptomic and phylogenomic studies. A series of key larval transformations is associated with the origin of Holometabo

Differentiation of follicular cells in polytrophic ovaries of Neuroptera (Insecta: Holometabola).

Mechanisms that underlie differentiation and diversification of the ovarian follicular epithelium in insects have been best characterized in a fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. Recent comparative analyses have shown that dipterans evolved a common, specific system of early patterning of their follicular epithelium, while some of the follicular cells acquired an ability to undertake active and invasive migrations. To gain insight into the evolution of the differentiation pathways we extended comparative analyses to Neuroptera, one of the most archaic holometabolan insects with polytrophic ova

Morphology of the pterothoracic musculature in Paraneoptera and its phylogenetic implication (Insecta: Neoptera).

Although the monophyly of Paraneoptera (=hemipteroid orders or Acercaria, composed of Psocodea, Thysanoptera and Hemiptera) has been widely accepted morphologically, the results from molecular phylogenetic and phylogenomic analyses contradict this hypothesis. In particular, phylogenomic analyses provide strong bootstrap support for the sister group relationship between Psocodea and Holometabola, that is, paraphyly of Paraneoptera. Here, we examined the pterothoracic musculature of Paraneoptera, as well as a wide range of other neopterous insect orders, and analysed its phylogenetic implication

The giant "penis" of a newly described species in the subgenus Scotoconiopteryx from Peru (Neuroptera: Coniopterygidae: Coniopteryginae: Coniopteryx).

The coniopterygid fauna of the Neotropical region is poorly known. The most recent summary was provided by Martins (2019) who noted that 14 species were known from Peru. The subgenus Coniopteryx (Scotoconiopteryx) is endemic to the Neotropical region and comprises 36 species (Meinander 1972; Meinander Penny 1982; Sziráki 2011; Martins Amorim 2016, Sarmiento-Cordero Contreras-Ramos 2019).

Phylloicus mirabilis (Trichoptera: Calamoceratidae), a new species from Rio de Janeiro state, southeastern Brazil.

Phylloicus Müller 1880 is an endemic Neotropical genus of Calamoceratidae characterized by adults that have diurnal to crepuscular habits. Currently, the genus contains 57 species, with 23 of these species recorded from Brazil. Herein, a new species of Phylloicus is described and illustrated based on specimens collected in Malaise traps from Southeast Region, Brazil. The new species can be characterized by the unusual lateral membranous lobes of abdominal segments IV-VII, metathoracic tibiae with brushes of setae and distal emargination, and the wide and long coremata on abdominal pleura VII.

Non-Invaginated Wing Primordia in Holometabolous Insects: First Report From Mecoptera.

This study presents the first detailed histological description of wing primordium development in Mecoptera and demonstrates a late-forming, non-invaginated developmental mode lacking a morphologically distinct peripodial epithelium. Wing primordium development in holometabolous insects follows two major modes, early-forming and late-forming. Late-forming primordia are epidermal cell populations that remain integrated within the larval epithelium, contribute to cuticle production during each larval molt, and begin morphogenesis only in the final instar. The order Mecoptera remains among the le

A tribute to Fernando A. Silveira and his contributions to bee research.

Fernando A. Silveira had the unique combination of being a sagacious scientist and a remarkable human being. Throughout his career, he made significant contributions to understanding bee diversity and keenly spread this scientific information to the academic community at large and beyond the university walls. His rich character, warm heart, strong voice and laughter are missed by those privileged to be Fernandos students, friends, mentors, and family. In this volume, we honor Fernando A. Silveira, who prematurely passed away at the age of 62, leaving three sons, his wife, and numerous friends.

The endoparasitic larval stages of Eoxenos laboulbenei: An atypical holometabolan development (Strepsiptera, Mengenillidae).

Endoparasitic larval stages of Eoxenos laboulbenei were documented with different techniques, with a main focus on the male tertiary larva. Two discrete endoparasitic stages occur, the secondary and the tertiary larva. The presence of large compound eyes and externally visible wing buds in the tertiary larva is a unique feature within Holometabola. The brain with large optic lobes is followed by a single postcephalic ganglionic complex. The cephalic musculature is greatly reduced but pharyngeal dilators and muscles associated with the mouth field are present. Postcephalic sclerites are absent

Beautiful wing coloration pattern in a new doratomantispine species (Neuroptera: Mantispidae) from the mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber.

A new species, namely Doratomantispa pouilloni sp. nov., of the mantidfly subfamily Doratomantispinae, is described and illustrated from a complete individual preserved in mid-Cretaceous amber from Tanai, northern Myanmar. Doratomantispa pouilloni sp. nov. preserves nearly all the diagnostic characters of this subfamily, but differs from the two other species of the genus Doratomantispa, inter alia, in its forelegs with stout trochanter, femora with nine spines on outer edge, two spines on inner edge, tibia with parallel sides, probasitarsomeres with around six pairs of black and thick spines;

A new species of Brasixenos Kogan & Oliveira, 1966 (Strepsiptera: Xenidae) from Mexico.

The first record of the genus Brasixenos Kogan & Oliveira is presented for Mexico with the description of B. mesoamericanus, a species found in localities from central Veracruz state. The males of this species are characterized by the mouthparts shape, wing venation, and genitalia. The females are identified by their reduced size and the mandible morphology. Polybia plebeja is identified as the host of this species. The biology and distribution of Brasixenos, and challenges in the study of this genus in the Neotropical region are discussed.

Mandible mechanical properties and composition of the larval Glossosoma boltoni (Trichoptera, Insecta).

Insect feeding structures, such as mandibles, interact with the ingesta (food or/and substrate) and can be adapted in morphology, composition of material and mechanical properties. The foraging on abrasive ingesta, as on algae covering rocks, is particularly challenging because the mandibles will be prone to wear and structural failure, thus suggesting the presence of mandibular adaptations to accompany this feeding behavior. Adaptations to this are well studied in the mouthparts of molluscs and sea urchins, but for insects there are large gaps in our knowledge. In this study, we investigated

Mouthpart structure of the adult Bicaubittacus appendiculatus () (Mecoptera: Bittacidae).

The structure and functional morphology of the mouthparts were investigated in adult hangingfly Bicaubittacus appendiculatus (Esben-Petersen, 1927) by scanning electron microscopy and histological serial sections. The mandibulate mouthparts consist of a labrum-epipharynx, paired mandibles and maxillae, and unpaired labium and hypopharynx. The labrum is elongated and tapered toward the apex. The epipharynx is furnished with numerous sensilla. The mandibles are sword-shaped, with an outer sharp tooth curved mesad and an inner blunt corner. The basal region of each mandible processes a conical pr

Why fake death? Environmental and genetic control of tonic immobility in larval lacewings (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae).

Tonic immobility is a passive antipredator strategy employed late in the predation sequence that may decrease individual mortality in prey animals. Here, we investigate how energetic state and genetic predisposition influence antipredator decision-making in green lacewing larvae, Chrysoperla plorabunda (Fitch), using simulated predatory encounters. We demonstrate that tonic immobility is a plastic response influenced by energetic resource limitation. Larvae exposed to 1 or 2 days of food deprivation initiate tonic immobility more often and with less physical provocation than individuals fed ad

Identification of G protein-coupled receptors in the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum.

GPCRs play crucial roles in the growth, development and reproduction of organisms. In insects, a large number of GPCRs have been reported for Holometabola but not Hemimetabola. The recently sequenced pea aphid genome provides us with the opportunity to analyze the evolution and potential functions of GPCRs in Hemimetabola. 82 GPCRs were identified from the representative model hemimetabolous insect Acyrthosiphon pisum, 37 of which have ESTs evidence, and 73 are annotated for the first time. A striking difference between A. pisum, Drosophila melanogaster and Tribolium castaneum is the duplicati

Life habits, hox genes, and affinities of a 311 million-year-old holometabolan larva.

BACKGROUND: Holometabolous insects are the most diverse, speciose and ubiquitous group of multicellular organisms in terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems. The enormous evolutionary and ecological success of Holometabola has been attributed to their unique postembryonic life phases in which nonreproductive and wingless larvae differ significantly in morphology and life habits from their reproductive and mostly winged adults, separated by a resting stage, the pupa. Little is known of the evolutionary developmental mechanisms that produced the holometabolous larval condition and their Paleozoic

Chemical Ecology of Neuroptera.

With 6,000 species, Neuroptera (lacewings, antlions, dustywings, and allies) is a relatively small order; however, most larval neuropterans are predacious, often in agricultural systems, lending added importance to this group. Advances in neuropteran phylogeny, most recently through genomic studies, stabilized the nomenclature of this ancestral order of Holometabola, facilitating basic and applied research on these important and interesting insects. The first pheromones for green lacewings (Chrysopidae) have been identified; this, and other research on antlions (Myrmeleontidae), suggests that

Neurogenesis in the trunk and brain of the milkweed bug Oncopeltus fasciatus: insights beyond holometabolan models.

Current research on insect neurogenesis is focused on Holometabola, which undergo a derived developmental mode that includes metamorphosis, leading to a partial representation of the range of neurogenesis patterns in the embryonic insect nervous system. In this paper, we investigate neurogenesis in the hemimetabolous insect Oncopeltus fasciatus, focusing on both the trunk and brain regions. Our findings reveal early neuroblast formation in the brain, followed by a second phase in the whole embryo. Notably, we did not find gene expression patterns consistent with pro-neural clusters in Oncopelt

The Morphological Transformation of the Thorax during the Eclosion of Drosophila melanogaster (Diptera: Drosophilidae).

The model organism Drosophila melanogaster, as a species of Holometabola, undergoes a series of transformations during metamorphosis. To deeply understand its development, it is crucial to study its anatomy during the key developmental stages. We describe the anatomical systems of the thorax, including the endoskeleton, musculature, nervous ganglion, and digestive system, from the late pupal stage to the adult stage, based on micro-CT and 3D visualizations. The development of the endoskeleton causes original and insertional changes in muscles. Several muscles change their shape during developm

Proton pump inhibitors act synergistically with fluconazole against resistant Candida albicans.

The incidence of resistant Candida isolates, especially Candida albicans, has increased continuously. To overcome the resistance, research on antifungal agent sensitizers has attracted considerable attention. Omeprazole and lansoprazole were found to inhibit the growth of sensitive C. albicans and hyphae formation in a high dose, respectively. This study aimed to determine the interactions of common clinically proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and fluconazole both in vitro and in vivo and to further explore the possible mechanisms. In vitro, the tested PPIs all acted synergistically with fluconazo

Toxicity of nine insecticides on four natural enemies of Spodoptera exigua.

Spodoptera exigua, which feeds on various crops worldwide, has natural enemies that are susceptible to the insecticides used against S. exigua. We investigate the toxicity and residue risk of 9 insecticides on the development of H. axyridis, C. sinica, S. manilae and T. remus. S. manilae and T. remus adults were sensitive to all 9 insecticides (LC50 less than 2.75 mg a.i. liter-1), while H. axyridis and C. sinica adults were less sensitive (LC50 between 6 × 10-5 mg a.i. liter-1 and 78.95 mg a.i. liter-1).
