Asthma and the home environment.

Recent years have seen a global increase in asthma prevalence. This has coincided with modifications to the home environment resulting in changes to the indoor air quality. This article considers the links between indoor pollution and asthma. Exposure to a range of substances is examined. Airborne allergens such as those from house dust mites may be important. Pollution from particulate materials associated with combustion and smoking is discussed, as is the role of chemical vapors and gases including nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and volatile organic compounds. The efficacy of various env

Catheters at home: managing urinary catheters in the home environment.

In England, there are some 90000 people with catheters in the community, and community nurses often have to manage catheter-related problems. This article looks at these common catheter problems found in the community, for example, blockage, infections and positioning problems. These problems were identified by a literature review and from the author's experience, from many years working in the community. It has been found that education, knowledge, empowerment and communication are vital factors affecting patients' ability to manager their catheters themselves. The article begins with a discu

Scoring arousals in the home environment.

Arousals from sleep and consequent sleep disruption may be a causal link between sleep-disordered breathing and its sequellae in children. Quantification of arousals therefore makes an important contribution to the overall assessment of the sleep of a child with suspected obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) or other sleep disorders. Arousals are classically defined by changes in the electroencephalographic (EEG) channels, but most arousals in children involve body movement in addition to EEG changes. Several methods of quantifying arousals without the use of EEG have been proposed, with the aim of s

Development and assessment of a home environment checklist to evaluate mismatch between patients' ability and home environment.

BACKGROUND: Modification of the home environment, together with rehabilitative interventions, is important for maximizing the level of functioning after an individual with disability undergoes rehabilitation in the hospital. OBJECTIVES: We developed a simple screening scale - the home environment checklist (HEC) - to identify any mismatch between an individual's abilities and their home environment to help clinicians monitor the appropriateness of the home environment to which individuals with disability will be discharged. We also examined the psychometric properties of the HEC. METHODS: Th

[Fungi in the home and hospital environment].

From the viewpoint of 40 years of experience in the field of medical mycology with the help of current topics the competence of the medical mycologist for evaluation of a presence of fungi in the home and hospital environment is commented. The topics considered are as follows: 1. The HIV-infected person and the habitat of Cr. neoformans; the predisposition for cryptococcosis and the CD4 lymphocyte count. 2. Invasive aspergillosis after heart transplantation; by exemplary cooperation between the heart surgeon and the medical mycologist it could be demonstrated that the frequently fatal invasive

Intravenous diuretic administration in the home environment.

Chronic heart failure is a condition associated with ageing, affecting 1-2% of the adult population, raising to 70% of the adult population over 70 years of age. Diuretics are often the first-line treatment for patients with symptomatic heart failure, not just oedema. Traditionally, intravenous (IV) diuretic therapy has been administered only in hospitals. In 2012, the British Heart Foundation ran a pilot study investigating the effectiveness of IV diuretic administration within the home. Since then, there has been an increase in these services. This article examines the advantages and disadva

Children with Stroke: An Investigation of Their Home Environment.

Existing research on stroke in adults highlights the role of the built environment during recovery. However, this role has been greatly overlooked in the everyday lives of children with stroke. A stroke in childhood brings substantial changes for affected individuals and their families. Special care and treatments are necessary even many years after the stroke. Although many children recover after a stroke and can lead largely normal lives, cognitive and physical impairments are not uncommon. Typical consequences of childhood stroke include one-sided weakness (hemiparesis), ataxia, seizures, a

Disability and dignity-enabling home environments.

In Canada where long-term care is primarily oriented to elderly persons and affordable accessible housing is limited, younger disabled adults may be living in circumstances that do not meet their health needs and contribute to their social exclusion. The purpose of this study was to undertake an ethical analysis of what constitute an 'adequate' home environment for adults with significant mobility disabilities. An integrated design was used that combined qualitative interviews with normative ethical analysis in an iterative process. Twenty interviews with 19 participants were conducted in Onta

Speech pathology & Parkinson's disease in the home environment.

Those with Parkinson's Disease often suffer speech limitations distinct from other neurological diseases and stroke. Symptoms of dysarthria, the clinical term of impaired, uncoordinated, and weakened speech musculature, include reduced volume, breathiness, monotone pitch, accelerated rate of speech, and inability to communicate effectively over the telephone, in groups, and even in quiet one-to-one settings. The author discusses the voice, speech, and related deficits encountered by individuals with Parkinson's Disease and the speech-language pathologist's role in addressing these deficits.

Psychometric Properties of the Recovery Home Environment Scale.

BACKGROUND: Recovery homes for persons with alcohol and drug problems provide an abstinent living environment and social support for recovery. Research shows residents in these homes make significant, sustained improvements. However, descriptions of recovery environments within the homes have been limited. PURPOSE: The current study assessed psychometric properties for the Recovery Home Environment Scale (RHES), which assessed social environments within one type of recovery home, sober living houses (SLHs). METHODS: 373 residents were interviewed at entry into the house, 1-month follow-up, a

Helicobacter pylori risk associated with childhood home environment.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is considered to be a cause of gastric ulcer, gastric cancer and other diseases. The relationship between infection and the hygiene or housing circumstances of such patients in their childhood was explored. The study subjects were those who applied for a H. pylori antibody test, and were asked to fill out a questionnaire enclosed with a test kit, inquiring as to their hygiene and housing conditions when they were 10 years old. Of 5971 applicants, 5854 agreed to participate in the study. Associations between the six factors in the questionnaire and infection were

Microbial inactivation by microwave radiation in the home environment.

The study reported here looked at the survival of microorganisms (heterotrophic plate counts, total coliforms, E. coli, and bacterial spores) in a consumer-type microwave oven. Kitchen sponges, scrubbing pads, and syringes were experimentally contaminated with wastewater and subsequently exposed to microwave radiation. At 100 percent power level, it was found that the heterotrophic plate count (i.e., total bacterial count) of the wastewater was reduced by more that 99 percent within 1 to 2 minutes, and the total coliform and E. coli were totally inactivated after 30 seconds of microwave radiat

Home environment, brain injury, & school performance in LBW survivors.

BACKGROUND: There has been substantial research on low birthweight (LBW) as a predictor of adverse educational and cognitive outcomes. LBW infants perform worse on cognitive battery tests compared to children born at normal birthweight; however, children exposed to similar risks do not all share the same experiences. The complex, interrelated factors responsible for poor cognitive and achievement performance vary for different populations, but researchers hypothesize that the home environment may influence the infants' long-term health outcomes. PURPOSE: Examine the home environment as a mode

Dengue virus-infected Aedes aegypti in the home environment.

We determined abundance of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes and presence of dengue virus (DENV) in females collected from premises of laboratory-confirmed dengue patients over a 12-month period (March 2007 to February 2008) in Merida, Mexico. Backpack aspiration from 880 premises produced 1,836 females and 1,292 males indoors (predominantly from bedrooms) and 102 females and 108 males from patios/backyards. The mean weekly indoor catch rate per home peaked at 7.8 females in late August. Outdoor abundances of larvae or pupae were not predictive of female abundance inside the home. DENV-infected Ae. aeg

Care home versus hospital and own home environments for rehabilitation of older people.

BACKGROUND: Rehabilitation for older people has acquired an increasingly important profile for both policy-makers and service providers within health and social care agencies. This has generated an increased interest in the use of alternative care environments including care home environments. Yet, there appears to be limited evidence on which to base decisions. This review is the first update of the Cochrane review which was published in 2003. OBJECTIVES: To compare the effects of care home environments (e.g. nursing home, residential care home and nursing facilities) versus hospital environm

In-home environment and happiness among older adults in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: The fact that housing can play a critical role in maintaining the health and independence related to happiness of the older population has been studied in more developed countries. However, research on the effect of housing conditions on happiness is rare in less developed countries. This study aimed to construct and test a structural equation model describing the structural relationship among personal aspects (living alone and physical disability), in-home environment (sleeping place and toilet/bathroom), and happiness among older adults in Thailand. METHOD: The data on the popul
