Low back injuries among home health aides compared with hospital nursing aides.

Data were collected from all incident reports of low back injury during 1984-1986 among nursing aides at one hospital and home health aides at two agencies in the Baltimore-Washington area. Respective rates of injury were 5.9/100 FTE's and 15.4/100 FTE's (p < 0.001). A majority of injuries occurred during patient-related, planned activities and without the use of lifting equipment. Forty percent of the events occurred at the bedside. Eighty-eight percent of home health aides were working alone compared with 39 percent of NAs. Ergonomic interventions may be an effective strategy to reduce injur

Home health aides' perspectives towards achieving cardiovascular health and life's essential 8: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Despite frequently providing care to adults with cardiovascular (CV) disease in the home, home health aides and attendants (HHAs) have poor CV health (CVH) themselves, which is problematic for their own health and potentially their patients. We elicited the perspectives of HHAs towards achieving optimal CVH, including the American Heart Association’s (AHA’s) Life’s Essential 8 (LE8). METHOD: We conducted focus groups and interviews with HHAs from January 2023 to January 2024 in partnership with the 1199SEIU Training and Employment Fund, a benefit fund of the largest healthcare unio

iMprovIng the meNtal hEalth of home healTh AiDeS: A study protocol for the MINDSET study.

Home health aides and attendants (HHAs) are a fast-growing healthcare workforce who are integral to the rising movement that allows older adults to age in place. However, HHAs themselves are a vulnerable group of caregivers. Mostly middle-aged women of color paid dismally low wages, HHAs' work is physically taxing, emotionally challenging, and socially isolating. Consequently, HHAs have high levels of depressive symptoms and stress. Prior studies suggest that HHAs want to address this, but do not know how and cannot access or afford traditional mental health services. Here we describe the prot

Training home health aides to become peer coaches in mental health and wellness: The MINDSET Study.

Home health aides (HHAs) experience high rates of stress, depression, and social isolation, which threaten their health and workforce sustainability. To address this, we adapted the evidence-based Living Healthy peer coach (PC)-led, CBT-based training program for HHAs and assessed its feasibility and acceptability. From February to July 2024 we conducted a mixed-methods, single-arm pilot study with English- and Spanish-speaking HHAs, in collaboration with the 1199SEIU Training and Employment Fund (TEF). Participants completed baseline and post-training surveys and an interview. Twelve HHAs fro

"Who's Caring for Us?": Understanding and Addressing the Effects of Emotional Labor on Home Health Aides' Well-being.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Interventions to strengthen the home care workforce focus on workers' economic and physical well-being, without acknowledging the caring labor affecting emotional well-being. Our study examined workers' perceptions of the emotional effects of caring work, coping mechanisms, and desired support. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted 4 worker focus groups (n = 27). Moderators cross-checked codes and themes, and aides provided input through report-backs. RESULTS: Building close, trusting relationships with clients was central to aides' emotional well-being. Workplace Challenges and Well-being Among Home Health Aides Caring for Older Adults in a Metropolitan Health System: A Cross-Sectional Survey.

BACKGROUND: Home health aides (HHAs) are the frontline providers for vulnerable community-dwelling older adults. Despite their critical role, HHAs are often a understudied workforce. This study aimed to evaluate HHAs' workplace experiences and perceptions regarding caring for older adults, including data on dementia care needs. METHODS: Following preliminary focus groups, an anonymous survey was distributed to HHAs from a large home health care agency in the greater New York metropolitan area. The survey collected demographic data, professional experience, training, perceived job-related chal

Workforce implications of injury among home health workers: evidence from the National Home Health Aide Survey.

PURPOSE OF STUDY: The direct care workforce continues to rank as one of the most frequently injured employee groups in North America. Occupational health and safety studies have shown that workplace injuries translate into negative outcomes for workers and their employers. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Organization of Work and Occupational Safety and Health framework is used to examine (a) relationships between injuries and work outcomes as reported by home health aides (HHAs) and (b) the likely efficacy of employee training and supervisor support in reducin

Exploring mobility patterns and social health of older Canadians living at home to inform decision aids about housing: A mixed-methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Many tools support housing decisions for older adults but often overlook mobility patterns and social health. We explored these factors in older Canadians living at home to inform housing decisions. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods study with 20 older adults (65+) from Quebec and Alberta living independently or in senior residences with outdoor mobility. Data collection included sociodemographic information, GPS tracking, walking interviews, daily journals, and in-depth interviews. Data from interviews, which explored physical and social assets and barriers to social health

Suspected cluster of Neisseria meningitidis W invasive disease in an elderly care home: do new laboratory methods aid public health action? United Kingdom, 2015.

In 2015, a suspected cluster of two invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) cases of serogroup W Neisseria meningitidis (MenW) occurred in elderly care home residents in England over 7 months; case investigations followed United Kingdom guidance. An incident control team reviewed epidemiological information. Phenotyping of case specimens informed public health action, including vaccination and throat swabs to assess carriage. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) was conducted on case and carrier isolates. Conventional phenotyping did not exclude a microbiological link between cases (case 1 W:2a:P1.5,2 a

The use of home-based therapy with ready-to-use therapeutic food to treat malnutrition in a rural area during a food crisis.

When the international community declared a famine in Malawi in January of 2006, emergency food aid reached only populations with pre-existing health care services. To treat the widespread childhood malnutrition in Machinga district, a rural area lacking health care facilities, in February 2006 five outpatient therapeutic programs were implemented that utilized home-based therapy and ready-to-use therapeutic food. Children with severe malnutrition, defined as the presence of edema and/or a weight-for-height less than 70% of the reference standard, were enrolled in the program. Two senior clini

Optimizing the mobility of residents with dementia: a pilot study promoting healthcare aide uptake of a simple mobility innovation in diverse nursing home settings.

BACKGROUND: Almost 90 percent of nursing home residents have some type of mobility limitation. Many spend most of their waking hours lying in bed or sitting. Such inactivity can negatively affect residents' health and general well-being. This pilot study aimed to assess (1) the effect of the sit-to-stand activity on mobility outcomes of nursing home residents, (2) the effect of an audit-and-feedback intervention on uptake of the sit-to-stand activity by healthcare aides, and (3) the contextual factors influencing uptake of the sit-to-stand activity by healthcare aides. Medical home visit programs during COVID-19 state of emergency.

Elderly, homebound individuals comprise a vulnerable segment of society who have been disproportionately affected by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic through a myriad of unique challenges. There is a significant amount of fear of acquiring COVID-19 by seeking health care services, which has adversely affected patients by worsening fixable situations. Another challenge is the decrease in diagnostic support for evaluating patients compared with a pre-COVID-19 world. Agencies providing at-home phlebotomy, portable radiology, and support services have had to limit their home visits

"Patchworking" Social Support Among Vietnamese Americans for Chronic Disease Management.

Vietnamese Americans commonly experience a variety of chronic medical conditions. Social support can play a salient role in chronic disease management, but little is known about these dynamics among Vietnamese Americans. A mixed-methods study aimed to understand medication adherence, health literacy, and cultural beliefs among Vietnamese American patients at a Massachusetts federally qualified health center. One hundred participants completed self-report surveys and pill counts, for which frequencies and descriptive analyses were conducted. A linear regression analysis was performed between so

Examining care aides' perspectives and attitudes towards the adoption and sustainment of technology in care delivery: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Care aides deliver the majority of hands-on care in long-term care facilities. Despite this involvement in care, a paucity of research explores their perspectives and attitudes regarding the introduction and implementation of healthcare technology. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review examined and synthesised available evidence regarding care aides' perspectives and attitudes towards healthcare technology and factors that may influence its adoption and sustainment. Training to Reduce Home Care Aides' Work Stress Associated with Patient Death: A Scoping Review.

Background: Home care workers (HCWs)-including home health aides, personal care aides, and other direct care workers-provide functional and other essential support that allows older, disabled, and seriously ill people to live at home. As a growing number of patients are aging and dying at home, HCWs are increasingly providing care at the end of life (EOL). Although prior qualitative studies have shown that patient death is an impactful and challenging experience for HCWs, the majority of HCWs receive almost no training on EOL issues. Objective: The goal of this scoping review is to identify in

Multiple Jobholding and Earnings Differences Among Direct Care Workers.

While the aging population increasingly relies on direct care workers-personal care aides, home health aides, and nursing assistants-insufficient income drives many of these workers to acquire second jobs. Using the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP), we evaluate the earnings gap between direct care workers who do and do not hold second jobs and how it varies depending on the type of second job. On average, direct care workers with secondary employment work more hours and earn higher total income than those who hold just one job. However, after adjusting for total hours worked,

Safety factors predictive of job satisfaction and job retention among home healthcare aides.

OBJECTIVES: Although many of the well known work characteristics associated with job satisfaction in home health care have been documented, a unique aspect of the home health care aides' (HHA) work environment that might also affect job satisfaction is the fact that their workplace is a household. To obtain a better understanding of the potential impact of the risks/exposures/hazards within the household environment on job satisfaction and job retention in home care, we recently conducted a risk assessment study. METHODS: Survey data from a convenience sample of 823 New York City HHAs were ob

Financing of pediatric home health care. Committee on Child Health Financing, Section on Home Care, American Academy of Pediatrics.

In certain situations, home health care has been shown to be a cost-effective alternative to inpatient hospital care. National health expenditures reveal that pediatric home health costs totaled $5.3 billion in 2000. Medicaid is the major payer for pediatric home health care (77%), followed by other public sources (22%). Private health insurance and families each paid less than 1% of pediatric home health expenses. The most important factors affecting access to home health care are the inadequate supply of clinicians and ancillary personnel, shortages of home health nurses with pediatric exper
