Based on Dutch nationally representative data, this article reports on the number of psychological and social problems that residents of homes for the elderly (n = 2893) present to their general practitioner (GP). Furthermore, the number of encounters residents with psychological or social problems have with the general practice and the interventions which the GP applies are described. A comparison is made with elderly patients living independently (n = 28056). In a three-month period the GP found psychological problems in 33 per cent of the patients from homes for the elderly. For elderly pat

The decline of residents of the old people's home we published about in this journal in 1983 and 1985 appears to be able to slow down both by adaptation of the organisation (scaling down the wards and simultaneously increasing the number of them) and the working methods of the staff (oriented towards the residents). The measures we suggested were meant to give the residents more hold of their own lives and to stimulate social contacts. After some changes in the organisation there was no further increase of physical and psychosocial problems of the residents. The newly admitted people benefitte

BACKGROUND: India accounts for one fourth of the TB burden globally. One of the objectives of the National Strategic Plan is to achieve 90% notification rate of all TB cases. Screening of high risk groups is one of the important components towards achieving this objective. Inmates of homes for the aged and orphanages are at higher risk of having TB infection and disease. Hence this study was conducted with the objective of identifying the prevalence of TB among inmates of homes for the aged and orphanages.
METHODS: A cross sectional study was done in homes for the aged and orphanages of Kolla

The article presents the design of an open controlled, non-randomized population based intervention trial in institutionalized elderly that will be performed in Ulm/Germany starting in 1998. The multimodal intervention includes education, counseling, training, and hip protectors as well as information on potential environmental modifications in nursing homes. Two historical and one geographical control group will be formed. All institutionalized elderly will be assessed by means of the Minimum Data Set of the Resident Assessment Instrument. The intervention will last 12 months. The main object

BACKGROUND: By 2040, dementia is projected to rise exponentially by 300% in India. Studies addressing the need for psychiatric care in the community being few and those focusing in old age homes even fewer, a study was undertaken to study the prevalence of dementia and the association with sociodemographic factors and psychiatric morbidity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 558 elderly aged 60 years and above, residing in old age homes in Pune were studied. 179 inmates were included based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Those who scored a predetermined cut-off score on the screening

The increase of life expectancy provides the unique opportunity to participate actively in social life many years after retirement and upbringing of children. In Germany, over 80 % of the population 60 years and older are living independently in the community, and approximately 95 % stay in their own homes. On the other hand, the probability to suffer from diseases, frailty and impaired activities of daily life activities also rises with higher age. However, only on rare occasions older people in need of nursing care do like to give up their home voluntarily. Next to innovative forms of dwelli

The home environment has been a central topic in the discipline of environmental gerontology. Home becomes the place where inhabitants' emotions and senses intertwine with their physical environment. As time spent at home increases with age, so does the importance of home environments for inhabitants' wellbeing. However, contemporary understandings of wellbeing within environmental gerontology have been criticized for their individualistic and human-centered approaches, treating the home environment primarily as a passive determinant of subjective wellbeing and neglecting the relationality of

Home hospice care is not merely an extension of hospital-based medical care administered at the hospital, but refers to hospice care for patients with life-threatening diseases that can only be given at their homes. The rapid growth of the elderly population in Japan has led to not only the need for home hospice care, but also social problems such as living alone, living with only one elderly family member, and problems that are particularly acute in cancer patients with dementia. We analyzed data for 262 patients for whom home hospice care was provided by our clinic. Overall, elderly persons

The objective of a low-vision clinic developed at the Jewish Home and Hospital for Aged was to improve the visual capabilities of the residents who were not helped by the regular eye clinics. Eighty-three patients (72 women, 11 men) were examined the first year. Ages ranged from 71 to 101 years. The causes of poor vision were mainly senile macular degeneration, cataract formation, chronic glaucoma, severe myopia, aphakia, and combinations of these diseases. Vision ranged from 10/50 at 10 feet (20/100 at 20 feet) in the better eye, to only the ability to distinguish hand movements or to perceiv

A central mantra of aging centers on staying socially engaged - a prescription supported by numerous studies reporting how social engagement enhances well-being in later life. Research in this area has primarily focused on interaction with family and friends, paid work, and unpaid activities such as volunteering, while devoting less attention to involvement in organizations with explicitly political goals. Political engagement - particularly activism oriented toward social change - may not only shape communities but also transform how individuals experience and understand their own aging. This

The concepts of 'house' and 'home' are compelling and contradictory. They are compelling because they elicit the desired sentiments of permanence, feeling 'at home', and maintaining continuity in one's life. At the same time, they can be experienced as contradictory where organizational practices and the socio-cultural imperatives of individual responsibility, cost containment, and rationed services are concerned. Where 'house' tends to evoke a sense of permanent stability, 'home' is regarded as the ideal living environment and site of care for older people. Yet, a consideration of the challen

BACKGROUND: Intrinsic thyroid diseases and so-called sick euthyroid syndrome are frequent among the elderly. Therefore, we set out to assess the usefulness of the measurement of thyroid hormones and TSH on admission to a public nursing home.
METHODS: A medical history, physical examination, geriatric assessment and a venous sample were taken from 201 elderly subjects on admission to a nursing home. Thyroid hormones and TSH were measured in all cases. All subjects were classified as valid, mentally impaired, or physically impaired, according to the Spanish Red Cross Scales.
RESULTS: Sixty non

The symptoms of epileptic seizures in old patients differ from those in younger patients. Therefore, these seizures may be misinterpreted as symptoms of other "typical" diseases in old people. In an old people's home, we assessed whether a standardized questionnaire is able to reveal undiagnosed epilepsy in the elderly. Reported sudden falls, loss of consciousness, and cramps were the criteria for further diagnostic procedures. We found epilepsy in 11 of 389 study participants. In four of them (1% of the total sample), the epilepsy was newly diagnosed; five more cases remained unclear. Therefo

Home, as a physical place and psychological construct, is often thought of as being an important locus of ontological security across the life course. However, there is a growing awareness of a darker side to the home (see Gurney, 2021), and home-unmaking practices (see Baxter and Brickell, 2014) that challenge the assumptions of home being purely a place of shelter, comfort, and control and instead foreground the temporal, material, and spatial fluidity of the home, and tensions between privacy and the ability to engage in health-harming behaviours largely unnoticed. Here, a material gerontol

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Intersectoral collaboration is essential for promoting healthy ageing. Preventive home visits provide an opportunity for home visitors to support healthy ageing among older adults. However, little is known about which collaboration partners the home visitors engage with. This study aimed to identify collaboration partners engaged by home visitors to achieve positive outcomes from preventive home visits.
METHOD: This study was based on a re-analysis of data from five focus group discussions with a total of 16 professionals involved in preventive home visits across five Swed
