Prenatal protein level impacts homing behavior in Long-Evans rat pups.

OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the effect of varying prenatal protein levels on the development of homing behavior in rat pups. METHODS: Long-Evans rats were fed one of the four isocaloric diets containing 6% (n = 7 litters), 12% (n = 9), 18% (n = 9), or 25% (n = 10) casein prior to mating and throughout pregnancy. At birth, litters were fostered to well-nourished control mothers fed a 25% casein diet during pregnancy, and an adequate protein diet (25% casein) was provided to weaning. On postnatal days 5, 7, 9, 11, and 13, homing behaviors, including activity levels, rate of successful return

Olfactory Basis of Homing Behavior in the Giant Garden Slug, Limax maximus.

Time lapse photography of slugs living in an experimental enclosure shows that these animals can return to a homesite from over 90 cm by a direct route. Slime trail following and vision are not involved in this behavior. In the presence of a low velocity wind, homing occurs upwind. Surgical disconnection of the presumptive olfactory apparatus (digitate ganglion) from the central nervous system eliminates homing. Neurophysiological recordings from the receptor surface associated with the digitate ganglion and the olfactory nerve demonstrate the olfactory function of the digitate ganglion. The o

Leptospira interrogans stably infects zebrafish embryos, altering phagocyte behavior and homing to specific tissues.

Leptospirosis is an extremely widespread zoonotic infection with outcomes ranging from subclinical infection to fatal Weil's syndrome. Despite the global impact of the disease, key aspects of its pathogenesis remain unclear. To examine in detail the earliest steps in the host response to leptospires, we used fluorescently labelled Leptospira interrogans serovar Copenhageni to infect 30 hour post fertilization zebrafish embryos by either the caudal vein or hindbrain ventricle. These embryos have functional innate immunity but have not yet developed an adaptive immune system. Furthermore, they a

Effects of prenatal alcohol on homing behavior, maternal responding and open-field activity in rats.

A radial-maze was used to study homing in offspring and maternal retrieval behaviors after prenatal exposure to alcohol. Pair-fed and untreated (ad lib control diet) groups were included and all offspring were either fostered or cross-fostered at birth. Offspring given ethanol prenatally exhibited a deficit in homing development and were retrieved significantly longer by ad lib control dams over the ten days of testing. The observed retrieval response may represent a compensation for the delayed development of the ethanol-exposed offspring. Consistent with our previous work, ethanol treatment

Changing behavior to maintain a healthy home.

Multidimensional strategies involving interpersonal interaction, strategic alliances and targeted use of the media have been shown experimentally to be the most effective behavioral change programs. Health providers need to communicate with schools and community groups, as well as work with product manufacturers and consumer and health organizations. Together these groups can collaborate with the media to communicate accurate information and guidance to the public. Planning effective public health and behavioral change campaigns involves diagnosis and identification of the target behavior. The

Managing the behavioral problems of dementia in the home.

The majority of persons with dementia are cared for in the home by family and friends. The goals of treatment in this setting are to maximize the quality of life of the demented person and minimize burdens on the caregiver. Behavioral problems are common with dementia and can lead to significant caregiver burden. Behaviors that are most common or most serious to caregivers include behaviors related to memory disturbances, restlessness and agitation, catastrophic reactions, day/night disturbances, delusions, wandering, and physical violence. A general method for clinicians to manage these probl

The activity, divergence, and evolutionary degradation of modern-day homing endonucleases and behavior of their reconstructed ancestors.

Homing endonucleases (HEs) are selfish genetic elements that drive the mobilization of their own coding sequences, often in concert with surrounding introns. Homing endonuclease genes (HEGs) usually display life cycles in which they accumulate inactivating mutations after invading a host genomic target site, leading to eventual removal from the genome. We identified several hundred novel HEGs and determined the distribution of their proteins' behaviors and activities. Approximately 10% are expressed as well-folded functional proteins that cleave predictable DNA target sites. Another ∼20% displ

LncRNA MALAT1 silencing represses CXCL12-induced proliferation, invasion, and homing behavior in multiple myeloma by inhibiting CXCR4.

BACKGROUND: Long non-coding RNA metastasis-associated lung adenocarcinoma transcript 1 (MALAT1) has been identified in multiple myeloma (MM); its influence on the homing behavior in MM cells is unclear. This study elucidates the impact and mechanism by which MALAT1 affects the homing behavior in MM cells. METHODS: Bone marrow was obtained from patients with MM. MALAT1 and C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) expression in cluster of differentiation 138-purified (CD138) plasma cells were detected by qRT-PCR and Western blotting. MALAT1, CXCR4, and C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 12 (CXCL12) i

Correlates of disruptive behaviors in nursing homes. A reanalysis.

This study reexamines factors associated with the occurrence of disruptive behaviors using a representative sample of nursing home residents in Rhode Island in 1984-1985. Four indicators of disruptive behaviors are examined using multivariate methods: evidence of any disruptive behaviors, abusive behavior, wandering, and noisiness. Results are compared with the 1989 study by Jackson et al., which was based on the same data. Findings indicate that the likelihood of exhibiting disruptive behaviors in nursing homes increases with the severity of cognitive impairment, ADL dysfunction, and incontin

Resident behavior and staff distress in the nursing home.

Newly enacted Federal regulations have focused increasing attention on the use of psychoactive drugs and on the treatment of disruptive behavior in the nursing home. To study the interaction between resident behavior and staff distress in nursing homes, we measured the frequency of seven types of behavior problems among 346 residents of intermediate care facilities who were receiving some form of psychoactive medication. Nurses were interviewed on two shifts to determine their perception of the frequency and severity of each behavior in each patient as well as the level of distress it caused a

Home-cage behavior in the Stargazer mutant mouse.

In many childhood-onset genetic epilepsies, seizures are accompanied by neurobehavioral impairments and motor disability. In the Stargazer mutant mouse, genetic disruptions of Cacng2 result in absence-like spike-wave seizures, cerebellar gait ataxia and vestibular dysfunction, which limit traditional approaches to behavioral phenotyping. Here, we combine videotracking and instrumented home-cage monitoring to resolve the neurobehavioral facets of the murine Stargazer syndrome. We find that despite their gait ataxia, stargazer mutants display horizontal hyperactivity and variable rates of repeti

Home Environmental and Behavioral Risk Indices for Reading Achievement.

The goal of this study was to identify home environmental and temperament/behavior variables that best predict standardized reading comprehension scores among school-aged children. Data from 269 children aged 9-16 (M = 12.08; SD = 1.62) were used in discriminant function analyses to create the Home and Behavior indices. Family income was controlled in each index. The final Home and Behavior models each classified around 75% of cases correctly (reading comprehension at grade level vs. not). Each index was then used to predict other outcomes related to reading. Results showed that Home and/or Be

Development of a human model to study homing behavior of immune cells into decidua and placental villi under ex vivo conditions.

PROBLEM: Homing of lymphocytes and NK cells into the decidua and its regulation has been very controversially discussed. Therefore, we aimed to establish an in vivo simulation method for analysis of homing behavior, which might be also useful for other cells such as stem or tumor cells. METHOD OF STUDY: A human term placenta has been perfused with medium to elute blood and then with maternal autologous carboxyfluorescein succinimidyl ester (CFSE)-labeled peripheral blood lymphocytes for 3 hr and rinsed for another 2 hr. Tissue was analysed histologically for detection of labeled cells. Labele

Observational data on time use and behavior problems in the nursing home.

A 3-month observational study of 24 agitated and severely cognitively impaired nursing home residents was conducted to document the typical ways in which residents spend their time and how time use relates to the manifestation of agitated behaviors. We found that these residents were involved in no activity during 63% of the observations. In addition, residents spent little time in structured activities (e.g., music therapy) or social activities (e.g., receiving visitors). Yet data analysis revealed that residents manifested a greater number of agitated behaviors when they were unoccupied and
