The association of hoof lesions at claw trimming with test-day milk yield in Danish Holsteins.

In a cross-sectional study, performed between October 2002 and April 2003 on 55 Danish dairy herds with 6161 predominantly Holstein Friesian cows the prevalence of 9 hoof lesions was determined. All test-day yields (TDY) of kg energy corrected milk (ECM) in the lactation of diagnosis were recorded. For the purpose of including hoof lesions in a decision support model an attempt was made to aggregate the lesions into digital dermatitis (DD), other interdigital diseases (OID, infectious diseases other than DD) and hoof horn diseases (HHD, related to metabolic disorders and trauma). A division wa

Association between hoof trimming frequency in primiparous cows and hoof health and survival in second lactation.

Lameness, mostly resulting from claw lesions, causes major welfare problems in the dairy industry. One way to prevent claw lesions is hoof trimming, but the overall effect and the optimal hoof trimming frequency are unknown. In a retrospective cohort study, we investigated the association between hoof trimming frequency in primiparous cows and hoof health and culling in the second lactation. We based our analysis on breed, calving, and culling data in the period 2015 to 2018 for 30,613 primiparous cows in 202 Swedish dairy herds. Of the cows enrolled, 20% were not hoof-trimmed, 30% were trimme

Effect of trimming of overgrown and deformed claws in goats on morphometric measurements.

Reduced welfare and productivity of dairy goats have often been associated with poor claw health, especially conditions such as claw overgrowth and deformations. It is known that periodic claw trimmings have prophylactic and therapeutic effects on these problems, and this study aimed to evaluate if the additional use of an angle grinder to finish trimming overgrown and deformed goat claws, after the usual trimming using hoof shears, could provide further changes in these claws. For this, twelve Saanen goats (57.29 ± 11.15 kg of body weight, 3.08 ± 1.78 years old) were selected by presence of s

Epidemiology of hoof lesions in Southern Italian dairy cows across hoof-trimming sessions: a retrospective observational pilot study.

As part of a nationwide initiative to standardise claw health data in Italian dairy cows, this retrospective observational pilot study used hoof-trimming records from 2023 to 2025 to quantify the prevalence and anatomical distribution of hoof lesions in Southern Italian herds. Data from 94 dairy farms were analysed, comprising 24,158 trimming events from 13,782 unique cows across 246 routine visits conducted for preventive and therapeutic purposes. Records included Farm ID, Cow ID, trimming date, lesion diagnosis and anatomical location, captured using dedicated hoof-trimming software. Lesion

High preoperative CONUT score is associated with treatment failure and mortality after surgery for acute periprosthetic joint infection: a single-centre retrospective cohort study.

Claw lesions in dairy cattle pose a significant risk to dairy farmers worldwide in terms of animal welfare concerns and economic profitability. However, the use of different data sources, classification systems, and definitions of reference groups limits the comparison across herds and decreases the usability of the recordings for phenotypic and genetic analyses. In South Africa, information on claw lesions is not routinely collected by dairy farmers and data are limited to hoof trimmers recording lesions during preventative trimming or as needed by producers. Records of the most common claw l

Measuring hoof horn haemorrhage in heifers: A history.

Understanding the aetiology and pathogenesis of claw-horn disease (CHD) is essential for developing prevention/treatment programmes. Haemorrhages in the hoof horn (i.e. white line/sole haemorrhages) are an important part of the pathogenesis of CHD, being precursors to and predictors of lesions such as white-line disease and sole ulcer. Understanding haemorrhage development can provide useful information about the aetiology and pathogenesis of CHD. The development of hoof horn haemorrhages is best studied in cattle without previous claw-horn damage, as previous history of damage can markedly al

Claw development and cornification in the passeraceous bird zebrafinch (Taeniatopygia guttata castanotis).

The histogenesis and cornification of claws in zebrafinch embryos has been analyzed. At 10-12 days post-deposition, the epidermis at the tip of the toes forms placode-like anlage associated with a mesenchymal condensation and with a terminal phalange. Claws seem to be modified scales, the dorsal side of which becomes the unguis whereas a ventral scale is the origin of the sub-unguis. At 14-15 days, numerous keratinocytes form the unguis, the corneous layer of which becomes thicker than in the sub-unguis and accumulates beta-keratin and lipids. Keratin bundles are mainly directed toward the tip

Equine laminitis: bites by Bothrops spp cause hoof lamellar pathology in the contralateral as well as in the bitten limb.

The envenoming caused by Bothrops snakebite includes local symptoms, such as pronounced edema, hemorrhage, intense pain, vesicles, blisters and myonecrosis. The principal systemic symptom consists in the alteration of blood clotting, due to fibrinogen consumption and platelet abnormalities. The horses involved in this study had this symptomatology and one of them exhibited symptoms consistent with laminitis in the bitten and in the contralateral limbs. Laminitis lesions were characterized by separation of the hoof lamellar basement membrane (BM) from basal cells of the epidermis. These results

Invited review: Genetics and claw health: Opportunities to enhance claw health by genetic selection.

Routine recording of claw health status at claw trimming of dairy cattle has been established in several countries, providing valuable data for genetic evaluation. In this review, we examine issues related to genetic evaluation of claw health; discuss data sources, trait definitions, and data validation procedures; and present a review of genetic parameters, possible indicator traits, and status of genetic and genomic evaluations for claw disorders. Different sources of data and traits can be used to describe claw health. Severe cases of claw disorders can be identified by veterinary diagnoses

The histology and growth rate of Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) claws.

The histology and growth of reptilian and crocodilian claws (ungues) have been extensively studied; however, Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) claws have not received adequate attention. Furthermore, age estimations for reptilian claws remain unexplored, despite Nile crocodile claws being used in long-term dietary reconstruction studies, assuming certain age-related patterns. In this study, we investigate the histology and growth patterns of Nile crocodile claws, aiming to infer axes for sampling cornified material for radiocarbon dating and establish age estimations for crocodilian claws.

Claw retraction and protraction in the Carnivora: skeletal microvariation in the phalanges of the Felidae.

All carnivorans retract and protract their claws. In felids and some viverrids the claws of digits II through V of both the manus and pes have a larger arc of rotation than those of other carnivorans; the claws retract to the lateral side of the middle phalanx rather than onto its dorsal surface as in most other carnivorans. This condition should be termed hyper-retraction. Morphological features of the middle and distal (ungual) phalanges that have been purported to be necessary for hyper-retraction in felids vary considerably among digits within the manus and pes. These features include the

Longitudinal assessment of intensively reared dairy heifer claw growth and corkscrew shape development.

As the future of the dairy herd, heifers represent a large investment; however, compromised claw health poses a significant risk to their productivity and longevity. Issues with mobility can be influenced by foot growth and shape, with corkscrew claw conformations now reported in heifers. This study aimed to assess claw growth of precalving heifers, along with claw shape observations. A convenience sample of 20 preconception heifers from a single fully housed dairy herd in the UK, milking 2,500 cows, were recruited, aged between 249 and 265 d. They were restrained in a crush and had their feet

A Fracture in the Proximal Pastern Bone of a Free-Roaming Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis giraffa) Under Field Conditions.

Foot and hoof problems are one of the most common health concerns for giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) held in captivity. However, very limited information is available on the foot pathology for free-roaming giraffes. A free-roaming giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis giraffa) situated within a small Free State game reserve presented with limping, and provided a unique opportunity to examine and treat the apparent foot injury. After being sedated and restrained, radiographs were taken in the field. A lateral fracture was diagnosed in the proximal pastern bone of the right front leg of the giraffe

Jockey Perception of Shoe and Surface Effects on Hoof-Ground Interactions and Implications for Safety in the Galloping Thoroughbred Racehorse.

Riding racehorses is a high-risk profession and optimizing safety alongside performance is paramount. Horseshoes play a critical role in providing traction with the ground surface and are therefore a major determinant of safety. However, the subjective perceptions of expert riders influence attitudes towards using different shoes and must be taken into consideration before any changes may be implemented. This study used a questionnaire-based method to evaluate jockey opinion of four shoeing conditions (aluminum, steel, GluShu, and barefoot) trialed at gallop over turf and artificial surfaces.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes mellitus: where do we stand today?

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the morphology of pathological changes to the inner structures of the claw in cases of toe ulcers, white line disease in the heel and changes due to inappropriate weight bearing and deficient claw care. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Hind limbs of 55 cows displaying external signs of complicated sole ulcers were examined externally and internally. To examine the samples internally, a sagittal section was performed. Furthermore, the material was examined after bone maceration and histologically. A total of 43 claws of 112 digits with 120 deep sole ulcers displayed a toe ulcer
