Luteolin and hormesis.

The present paper provides the first integrated assessment of the capacity of luteolin to induce hormetic dose responses. It was shown that luteolin induced hormetic responses in multiple biological systems, including enhancing neuroprotection in various experimental model disease systems, improving wounding healing, especially in experimental models of high-risk population subgroups, such as diabetics, as well as enhancing osteogenesis in models of osteoporosis. The mechanistic basis for the luteolin-induced hormetic dose responses has been demonstrated to commonly involve the upregulation of

The marginalization of hormesis.

Despite the substantial development and publication of highly reproducible toxicological data, the concept of hormetic dose-response relationships was never integrated into the mainstream of toxicological thought. Review of the historical foundations of the interpretation of the bioassay and assessment of competitive theories of dose-response relationships lead to the conclusion that multiple factors contributed to the marginalization of hormesis during the middle and subsequent decades of the 20th century. The challenges of defining hormesis in epidemiological studies: The case of radiation hormesis.

In the current radiation protection system, preventive measures and occupational exposure limits for controlling occupational exposure to ionizing radiation are based on the linear no-threshold extrapolation model. However, currently an increasing body of evidence indicates that this paradigm predicts very poorly biological responses in the low-dose exposure region. In addition, several in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated the presence of hormetic dose response curves correlated to ionizing radiation low exposure. In this regard, it is noteworthy that also the findings of different epidem

Nitric oxide and hormesis.

This present paper provides an assessment of the occurrence of nitric oxide (NO)-induced hormetic-biphasic dose/concentration relationships in biomedical research. A substantial reporting of such NO-induced hormetic effects was identified with particular focus on wound healing, tumor promotion, and sperm biology, including mechanistic assessment and potential for translational applications. Numerous other NO-induced hormetic effects have been reported, but require more development prior to translational applications. The extensive documentation of NO-induced biphasic responses, across numerous

Formaldehyde: Another hormesis-inducing chemical.

Formaldehyde (FA) is a naturally-occurring compound, produced endogenously in diverse living organisms. It also occurs widely in the environment due to anthropogenic (e.g. used as a chemical intermediate) and natural sources (e.g. a component of the volatile organic compounds blends emitted by plants). While FA is considered a potential carcinogen, living organisms have the ability to cope with FA, and some minimum endogenous levels of FA may be required for health. Recently, genetic engineering approaches transferring biological information from one organism to another led to increased assimi

Hormesis and homeopathy: The artificial twins.

Homeopathy claims a curative reaction from small doses of a substance, high doses of which cause symptoms similar to those the patient is suffering from. Hormesis is a concept of biphasic dose-response to different pharmacological and toxicological agents. According to this concept, a small dose of a noxious agent can exert a beneficial action. A hypothesis is defended here that hormesis as a general principle can be assumed only for the factors present in the natural environment thus having induced adaptation of living organisms. Generalizations of the hormesis phenomenon used in support of h

The occurrence of hormesis in plants and algae.

This paper evaluated the frequency, magnitude and dose/concentration range of hormesis in four species: The aquatic plant Lemna minor, the micro-alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata and the two terrestrial plants Tripleurospermum inodorum and Stellaria media exposed to nine herbicides and one fungicide and binary mixtures thereof. In total 687 dose-response curves were included in the database. The study showed that both the frequency and the magnitude of the hormetic response depended on the endpoint being measured. Dry weight at harvest showed a higher frequency and a larger hormetic respons

Hormones, hormesis, and holistic obesity care.

Hormones and hormesis are different words, derived from the same root, hormao (to excite). Hormones are chemical messengers which ensure inter-organ and inter-cellular homeostatic communication. Hormesis is the phenomenon in which exposure to low dose of stressor causes a beneficial response, while higher doses have a neutral or negative effect on functioning of the organism. Hormesis is a well-accepted part of plant and animal biology, as well as certain fields of medicine. This commentary describes how obesity related hormones and hormesis are linked, using examples from reproductive endocri

Radiation hormesis: the demise of a legitimate hypothesis.

This paper examines the underlying factors that contributed to the marginalization of radiation hormesis in the early and middle decades of the 20th century. The most critical factor affecting the demise of radiation hormesis was a lack of agreement over how to define the concept of hormesis and quantitatively describe its dose-response features. If radiation hormesis had been defined as a modest overcompensation to a disruption in homeostasis as would have been consistent with the prevailing notion in the area of chemical hormesis, this would have provided the theoretical and practical means

Berberine induces pleiotropic beneficial effects via hormesis.

Berberine is a phytochemical that has been shown to prevent a spectrum of serious ailments, to slow aging, and to extend lifespans and health spans of animals, demonstrating its pleiotropic effectiveness. Like sulforaphane, metformin, resveratrol, and many other phytochemicals, berberine suppresses the expression of critical etiological factors-particularly oxidative stress, inflammation, and cellular damage-involved in the progression of many diseases (e.g., diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancers, and neurodegenerative disorders) and the aging process. Since the salutary responses elicite

Sea lice parasites and salmonids - a hormesis perspective.

Low-dose exposure to pesticides can have stimulatory effects on the biological traits of arthropods, a hallmark of hormesis, which induces adaptive responses. In this forum article we postulate that such responses could be induced in sea lice ectoparasitic copepods, offering a perspective for scientific advance and improved practical solutions.

Hormesis: an adaptive expectation with emphasis on ionizing radiation.

Non-linear fitness gradients with maxima between extremes are expected for any environmental variable to which free-living populations are exposed. For exceedingly toxic agents, including ionizing radiation, such deviations from linearity are close to zero exposure and are conventionally called hormesis. Accordingly, hormesis is an extreme version of the non-linear fitness gradients for general environmental stresses such as temperature fluctuations, for which maximum fitness occurs at the moderate temperature fluctuations to which free-living populations are most commonly exposed. Some metabo

Radiation hormesis, or, could all that radiation be good for us?

Nuclear medicine technologists work under significant radiation protection constraints. These constraints are based on the linear no-threshold (LNT) radiation paradigm, which was developed in the 1960s and was based largely on the deleterious effects of radiation as they were understood at the time. More recently, the theory of radiation hormesis, or a beneficial effect of low-level exposure to radiation, has gained recognition. This article reviews the history of attitudes toward radiation, describes the radiation hormesis hypothesis, examines some of the evidence that supports it, and sugges

Hormetic effects in pharmacology: pharmacological inversions as prototypes for hormesis.

A biological, physiological or biochemical response to a drug at a low dose may be completely opposite to that response when a larger dose is administered. Also, a response to a single dose of an agent may shortly afterwards be completely reversed. These observations are as old as the use of medicinal preparations or alcoholic beverages. The term "pharmacological inversions" can be used to describe these phenomena. A subset of the dose-response relationship is that of "hormesis." This term, "hormesis," is often used to denote the beneficial response of an organism to a low dose of a physical o
