Factors contributing to the contamination of hospital water distribution systems by legionellae.

To identify factors associated with the contamination of hospital water distribution systems by legionellae, 84 Quebec hospitals provided 3284 hot water specimens from 839 different sites. Concentrated samples were seeded on buffered charcoal yeast extract agar and a semi-selective medium. At least one water sample was contaminated by legionellae in 57 hospitals (67.9%). In 22 hospitals (26.2%), greater than 30% of samples were contaminated by these bacteria. In 9 (12.2%) of 74 hospitals, distilled water was colonized. The presence of at least one positive sample was found to be associated wit

Determinants of Legionella pneumophila contamination of water distribution systems: 15-hospital prospective study.

We conducted a prospective environmental study for Legionella pneumophila in 15 hospitals in Pennsylvania. Hot water tanks, cold water sites, faucets, and showerheads were surveyed four times over a one-year period. Sixty percent (9/15) of hospitals surveyed were contaminated with L pneumophila. Although contamination could not be linked to a specific municipal water supplier, most of the contaminated supplies came from rivers. Parameters found to be significantly associated with contamination included elevated hot water temperature, vertical configuration of the hot water tank, older tanks, a

Evaluation of a hospital controlled substances distribution system.

The distribution and control system for controlled drugs at a 500-bed hospital was evaluated. The time requirements of the system for pharmacy and nursing, the drug control procedures used, and the income and expenses of the system were evaluated. It was concluded that the system appears to offer full accountability, but it makes a heavy time demand on pharmacy and nursing. Time requirements could be reduced through a computerized system or by use of a certificate of disposition form that incorporates a charge voucher.

Gram-negative bacteria in water distribution systems of hospitals.

A total of 67 samples of tap water were collected from faucets and showerheads in 6 hospitals located in the Lublin province (eastern Poland). The samples were examined for the presence and species composition of Legionella, Gram-negative bacteria belonging to family Enterobacteriaceae (GNB-E) and Gram-negative bacteria not belonging to family Enterobacteriaceae (GNB-NE), by filtering through cellulose filters and culture on respectively GVPC, EMB and tryptic soya agar media. On average, Legionella was isolated from 65.7% of the water samples taken in hospitals. Strains of the Legionella pneum

How Molecular Typing Can Support Legionella Environmental Surveillance in Hot Water Distribution Systems: A Hospital Experience.

In this study, we aimed to associate the molecular typing of Legionella isolates with a culture technique during routine Legionella hospital environmental surveillance in hot water distribution systems (HWDSs) to develop a risk map able to be used to prevent nosocomial infections and formulate appropriate preventive measures. Hot water samples were cultured according to ISO 11731:2017. The isolates were serotyped using an agglutination test and genotyped by sequence-based typing (SBT) for Legionella pneumophila or macrophage infectivity potentiator (mip) gene sequencing for non-pneumophila Leg

Geostatistics - a tool applied to the distribution of Legionella pneumophila in a hospital water system.

INTRODUCTION: Legionnaires' disease is normally acquired by inhalation of legionellae from a contaminated environmental source. Water systems of large buildings, such as hospitals, are often contaminated with legionellae and therefore represent a potential risk for the hospital population. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential contamination of Legionella pneumophila (LP) in a large hospital in Italy through georeferential statistical analysis to assess the possible sources of dispersion and, consequently, the risk of exposure for both health care staff and patients. MATERIALS AN

Evaluation of the effectiveness of the Pastormaster method for disinfection of legionella in a hospital water distribution system.

The Pastormaster method consists of heating the water of hospital distribution systems at a specific point to a sufficient temperature for a minimum amount of time to eradicate legionella. The object of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Pastormaster method for legionella disinfection in a hospital environment. A two-phase procedure was performed: hydraulic optimization of the water supply circuit, and implementation of the Pastormaster method. Water samples were taken at 10 representative points in the hospital hot-water system and cultured microbiologically. Other physical a

Incidence and Distribution of the Pathogens Causing Central Nervous System Infections at the University Hospital of Korea.

BACKGROUND: The pathogens involved in central nervous system (CNS) infections are various, such as viruses, bacteria, and fungi, so a syndromic approach can be required. In addition, since their rapid and accurate detection is very crucial, molecular diagnostics using cerebrospinal fluid is becoming the emerging standard method. METHODS: The study was conducted retrospectively to identify the incidence and distribution patterns of the pathogens according to gender, age, season, and month and to analyze their codetection from August 2017 to July 2020. Real-Time Continuous Surveillance of Temperature and Flow Events Presents a Novel Monitoring Approach for Hospital and Healthcare Water Distribution Systems.

Within hospitals and healthcare facilities opportunistic premise plumbing pathogens (OPPPs) are a major and preventable cause of healthcare-acquired infections. This study presents a novel approach for monitoring building water quality using real-time surveillance of parameters measured at thermostatic mixing valves (TMVs) across a hospital water distribution system. Temperature was measured continuously in real-time at the outlet of 220 TMVs located across a hospital over a three-year period and analysis of this temperature data was used to identify flow events. This real-time temperature and

Toxic shock syndrome: incidence and geographic distribution from a hospital medical records reporting system.

A large database of hospital records maintained by the Commission on Professional and Hospital Activities Professional Activity Study (CPHA-PAS) was used to estimate the temporal incidence and geographic distribution of toxic shock syndrome (TSS). The CPHA-PAS hospital-diagnosed incidence was 3.5 times the reported TSS incidence, with a gradual decrease over the time period 1981-83. Marked differences in the regional occurrence of cases may provide clues to the etiology of this complex disease.

Sequence-based typing of Legionella pneumophila strains isolated from hospital water distribution systems as a complementary element of risk assessment of legionellosis in Poland.

Many factors affect the risk of Legionella infection, such as the design, construction and maintenance of water distribution systems, the presence of individuals who may be exposed and their vulnerability to infection, and the degree of water system colonization and properties of Legionella strains. For epidemiological investigations, two properties of the Legionella strains are usually determined: serotyping and genotyping (sequence-based typing, SBT). In Poland, data regarding legionellosis are fragmentary, despite the fact that this has been a notifiable disease since 2002. The number of re

Taxonomic and Functional Distribution of Bacterial Communities in Domestic and Hospital Wastewater System: Implications for Public and Environmental Health.

The discharge of untreated hospital and domestic wastewater into receiving water bodies is still a prevalent practice in developing countries. Unfortunately, because of an ever-increasing population of people who are perennially under medication, these wastewaters contain residues of antibiotics and other antimicrobials as well as microbial shedding, the direct and indirect effects of which include the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes and an increase in the evolution of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that pose a threat to public and environmental health. This study assessed the taxo
