[Hospital surge capacity volunteers in an emergency: a scoping review].

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic was marked by increased patient surge in hospitals around the world as well as significant staff shortages due to illness and isolation. Hospital preparedness plans in Germany should plan for staff surge capacity in the event of a future pandemic or disaster. OBJECTIVE: We assessed whether non-medical helpers could be incorporated as surge capacity workforce in German hospitals. METHODS: For this scoping review we performed an initial pilot search using GoogleScholar, followed by a systematic query of the Embase and Medline databas

Hospital volunteer's role and accident-prevention systems: a nationwide survey of Japanese hospitals.

This study aimed to examine the scope of activities performed by hospital volunteers. A survey was conducted on 3055 hospitals, randomly selected throughout Japan. Attention was also paid to the accident-prevention systems instituted by those facilities. Almost one-third (36.5%) of all hospitals had some hospital volunteers. About 60% (59.9%) of hospitals conducted volunteer activities more than once a week. Recreation (50.1%) was the most common role of the volunteers. The other activities in decreasing order were: conversation partners (45.8%), music and entertainment (43.7%), wheelchair pus

Use of Medical Reserve Corps Volunteers in a Hospital-based Disaster Exercise.

UNLABELLED: Introduction The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is a national network of community-based volunteer groups created in 2002 by the Office of the United States Surgeon General (Rockville, Maryland USA) to augment the nation's ability to respond to medical and public health emergencies. However, there is little evidence-based literature available to guide hospitals on the optimal use of medical volunteers and hesitancy on the part of hospitals to use them. Hypothesis/Problem This study sought to determine how MRC volunteers can be used in hospital-based disasters through their participati

The use of volunteers to help older medical patients mobilise in hospital: a systematic review.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To review current evidence for the use of volunteers to mobilise older acute medical in-patients. BACKGROUND: Immobility in hospital is associated with poor healthcare outcomes in older people, but maintaining mobility is frequently compromised due to time pressures experienced by clinical staff. Volunteers are established in many hospitals, usually involved in indirect patient care. Recent evidence suggests that trained mealtime volunteers had a positive impact on patients and hospital staff. It is unclear whether volunteers can help older inpatients to mobilise. DESIGN

Out-of-hospital birth training, experience and confidence of Australian rural volunteer ambulance officers.

INTRODUCTION: Unplanned out-of-hospital births represent less than 1% of ambulance requests for assistance. However, these call-outs have a high risk of life-threatening complications, which are particularly complex in rural or remote settings with limited accessibility to specialist care support. Many community hospitals no longer provide obstetrics care, so birth parents must travel to larger regional or metropolitan hospitals for assistance. Increased travel time may increase the risk of unplanned out-of-hospital birth and/or complications such as postpartum haemorrhage and neonatal mortali

Assessing the Impact of an Undergraduate Medical Student Volunteer Hospital Program: Active Mind Active Body.

BACKGROUND: Active Mind Active Body (AMAB) is a novel student-led program designed to lessen cognitive and physical isolation in hospitalized patients by facilitating social and physical activities. It offers preclinical undergraduate medical students (UMS), who often have limited clinical exposure, structured encounters while engaging patients socially, cognitively and physically. The aim of this study was to evaluate AMAB patient encounters and assess the experience of participating UMS. METHODS: Using convergent mixed methods, data were collected from the following sources: anonymized pati

[Dual assignment in crisis preparedness: extent and implications of volunteer engagement in civil protection from the hospital perspective : An online survey at Ulm University Hospital].

INTRODUCTION: The current security situation calls for greater resilience and comprehensive crisis preparedness within the German healthcare system. At the same time, around 90% of civil protection in Germany relies on voluntary work. Clinical staff who also volunteer in civil protection may face competing demands in crisis situations and are unable to be available to both sectors simultaneously. This dual role has so far been scarcely investigated systematically from the perspective of hospitals. METHODS: Between 14 January and 15 February 2026, all staff at Ulm University Hospital (UKU), in

Fecal Carriage of Enterobacteriaceae Producing Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamases in Hospitalized Patients and Healthy Community Volunteers in Burkina Faso.

Extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-PE) have been described worldwide, but few reports focused on Burkina Faso. To assess the prevalence of digestive carriage of such bacteria in the community and in the hospital, 214 fecal samples, 101 from healthy volunteers and 113 from hospitalized patients without digestive pathology, were collected in Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso economic capital, during July and August 2014. Stool samples were screened using ESBL agar plates. Strains were identified by mass spectrometry using the Biotyper MALDI-TOF. ESBL production was confi
