Risk of acquiring zoonoses by the staff of companion-animal hospitals.

The aim of this study was to obtain information on the risk of companion-animal hospital staff members acquiring zoonotic diseases. We surveyed veterinary technicians to estimate the rate of acquisition of zoonoses from pets while working in companion-animal hospitals. About one in five veterinary technicians (19.4%) reported acquiring zoonotic infections in their small-animal practice. The rate of acquisition of zoonoses by those who had worked for more than 5 years was significantly higher than by those who had worked for less than 1 year (p < 0.001, odds ratio: 6.74). The list of zoonoses i

Measuring the Attitudes of Animal Hospital Staff Toward Animals in Türkiye.

This study examined general attitudes toward animals among staff working in licensed animal hospitals in Türkiye. Using the 10-item Animal Attitude Scale (AAS-10), an online survey was administered to animal hospital staff; 193 questionnaires were completed from 17 provinces. Because total scores deviated from normality, group comparisons were conducted using non-parametric tests, and a multiple linear regression model was fitted to examine joint associations with demographic and professional variables. Overall, participants reported generally positive attitudes (mean AAS-10 = 36.7 ± 5.85; ran

Prevalence of Microsporum canis from Pet Cats in Small Animal Hospitals, Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Dermatophytosis is a disease caused by dermatophytes, a group of fungi that can cause disease both in humans and animals. The important genera that are pathogenic in animals include Trichophyton and Microsporum. Microsporum canis is an important species because it can cause zoonosis and is commonly found in domestic animals. Cats, which live very close to humans, may expose humans to this pathogen. This research focused on the epidemiology of M. canis found in cats. Hair samples were collected via the Mackenzie technique from cats with and without skin lesions, preliminarily examined with 10%

Investigation of the environmental presence of multidrug-resistant bacteria at small animal hospitals in Hungary.

Multidrug-resistant bacteria can cause severe nosocomial infections in both human and veterinary clinics. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence and antibiotic susceptibility of Enterococcus, Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas strains at four small animal clinics of Hungary in 2018, as these bacteria can reliably represent the level of antimicrobial resistance in the investigated environment. A total of 177 Staphylococcus colonies were found, including 22 Staphylococcus pseudintermedius and 13 Staphylococcus aureus. As regards enterococci, 9 Enterococcus faecium, 2 E. faecalis and f

Review of 59 patients hospitalized with animal bites.

We reviewed the charts of 59 pediatric and adult patients hospitalized because of animal bites (46 dog bites, 10 cat bites, 3 monkey bites). The bites of 40 of the 59 patients were infected at the time of admission. Gram-stained specimens correctly predicted the infecting bacteria in only 5 of 20 cases. Eighty-three percent of the bacterial isolates were penicillin-susceptible. Before admission 14 patients had received outpatient antibiotic prophylaxis and the infections in 11 of these 14 patients were caused by bacteria susceptible to the prophylactic antibiotic. Complications were more commo

Endocrine diseases in Brazilian small-animal hospitals and referral caseloads: A systematic review and meta-analysis of proportions.

Endocrinopathies are common chronic disorders in small-animal practice, and accurate estimation depends on standardized diagnostic criteria and denominator-defined populations. Brazilian epidemiological evidence is mostly drawn from hospital and referral settings, resulting in fragmented coverage, limited generalizability, and marked heterogeneity between studies. Conversely, VetCompass in the United Kingdom integrates standardized primary-care electronic records and supports denominator-based population inference. Searches were updated in January 2026 and covered PubMed, Web of Science, Scopu

Epidemiological survey on the route of Coxiella burnetii infection in an animal hospital.

The source of Q fever infection, was investigated by serological and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis of specimens from humans and pets in an animal hospital. Two animal health technicians showed a positive serological reaction against Coxiella burnetiiat the start. One of the two positive subjects remained PCR-positive for about 1 year and the other converted to PCR-negative, but the IgG antibody titer remained at 1 : 128 after minocycline treatment. Among animals housed in the hospital, two dogs were PCR-positive at the start, and the infection was transmitted to three cats about 5 m

A comparison of two cleaning methods applied in a small animal hospital.

BACKGROUND: Environmental cleaning of near-patient surfaces in animal healthcare is an important infection prevention and control measure to lower the risk of spread of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). There is a lack of reports on the effect of cleaning of near-patient surfaces in animal hospital wards. The aims of this study were to (1) determine bacterial load before cleaning, on near-patient surfaces in dog cages in a mixed medical and surgical ward and investigate factors associated with this bacterial load (2) compare the bacterial reduction on these surfaces after cleaning with

mecA gene transferrability and antibiogram of zoonotic Staphylococcus intermedius from animals, staff and the environment in animal hospitals in Korea.

Staphylococcus intermedius is a common cause of otitis externa, pyoderma and wound infections in companion animals. Although S. intermedius infections are rare in humans, it is zoonotic, with several case reports describing fatal human infections. Presently, we sought to isolate S. intermedius strains from various sources at animal hospitals nationwide in Korea, examine their antibiotic susceptibilities, and determine the possibility of horizontal transmission between animals and humans. Pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was used to compare the mecA gene in S. intermedius strains from hu

Genomics unveils country-to-country transmission between animal hospitals of a multidrug-resistant and sequence type 2 Acinetobacter baumannii clone.

Acinetobacter baumannii is a globally distributed opportunistic pathogen in human health settings, including in intensive care units (ICUs). We investigated the contamination of a French small animal ICU with A. baumannii. We discovered repeated animal contamination by A. baumannii, and phylogenetic analysis traced contamination back to a potential foreign animal origin. Genomic analysis combined with antibiotic susceptibility testing revealed heteroresistance to penicillin and aminoglycoside mediated by insertion sequence dynamics and also suggest a potential cross-resistance to human-restric
