Fear of disease progression is a common problem among patients with chronic disease. However, to the authors' knowledge, it was not studied in Ethiopia. Thus, this study aimed to assess fear of disease progression and related factors among patients with chronic disease attending South Wollo zone government hospitals, Northeast Ethiopia. Institution-based cross-sectional study design was conducted among 411 patients with chronic disease for quantitative data. For qualitative data in-depth interview were done until information saturation. The total sample size was allocated proportionally based

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who are hospitalized with a critical illness are at increased risk for adverse outcomes. We studied the predictors of hospitalization with critical illness among patients with non-dialysis-dependent CKD stages 3 and 4 in a safety-net healthcare setting.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted among patients ≥18 years of age with CKD stages 3 and 4 using a CKD registry from a safety-net healthcare system. Hospitalizations with critical illness were identified among patients requiring nonelective admission or transfer to the int

The functioning of a hospital for chronic diseases was examined in terms of the type of patient referred, the course in the hospital and the eventual outcome, in a prospective study of a year's admissions to one department of Harzfeld Hospital in Israel. Of the 191 patients admitted, 55 percent were assessed as possible candidates for rehabilitation, and two-thirds were discharged. Among those admitted primarily for nursing reasons, the mortality was 76 percent. The average stay was 68 days for the 47 percent who were discharged and 95 days for the 45 percent who died; 8.4 percent remained as

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) poses a substantial health burden in sub-Saharan Africa, with risk factors ranging from communicable to non-communicable diseases. Hyperuricemia has been recently identified as a factor of progression of CKD. Identifying factors associated with hyperuricemia in CKD patients would help determine interventions to reduce CKD mortality, particularly in resources limited countries. We sought to determine the prevalence and factors associated with hyperuricemia in non-dialysed CKD adult patients in Cameroon.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of non-d

We studied the prevalence of tuberculin reactivity and anergy in 360 elderly patients residing in two municipal chronic disease hospitals. Eighty-five (26%) of the 323 patients tested had a positive reaction to a stage 1 tuberculin test and 12 (6%) of the 207 stage 1 tuberculin-negative patients exhibited a booster response to a stage 2 tuberculin test. Thirty percent of the same 207 patients had no response to an anergy panel of skin test antigens that included candida, mumps, and trichophyton. Nonresponders to tuberculin and the anergy panel had significantly higher one-year mortality rates

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease or chronic renal failure is a progressive condition defined as abnormalities of kidney structure or function, present for longer than 3 months. It is estimated to affect more than 10% of the general population worldwide. Management of CKD represents an especially large burden for the health systems of low- and middle-income countries, and it has been recognized as a leading public health problem. Previous research articles reported an age-adjusted prevalence of 7.6% for Romania, but the hospital costs generated by CKD are unknown. The present research article

BACKGROUND: Despite the availability of effective therapies for patients with chronic kidney disease, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension (the kidney-dysfunction triad), the results of large-scale trials examining the implementation of guideline-directed therapy to reduce the risk of death and complications in this population are lacking.
METHODS: In this open-label, cluster-randomized trial, we assigned 11,182 patients with the kidney-dysfunction triad who were being treated at 141 primary care clinics either to receive an intervention that used a personalized algorithm (based on the patient's

OBJECTIVES: Chronic venous disease (CVD), which comprises primary/idiopathic abnormalities of the venous system, and secondary sequels after deep venous thrombosis are major health issues in Western countries. The present study was conducted to prove the hypothesis that the development of CVD might be triggered by exogenous, occupational risk factors.
METHODS: We determined the prevalence and social relationship of CVD in a wide cross-section of hospital employees (n = 209; medical doctors and nurses, medical technician assistants, secretaries, scientific staff, cleaners and utility workers)

We performed a retrospective chart analysis on 449 AIDS patients admitted to Bellevue Hospital Center from 1983-1986 to characterize the etiologies and clinical course of acute renal failure (ARF) and to define the incidence and clinical course of AIDS-associated nephropathy (AAN) in an unselected hospitalized AIDS population. Defining ARF as a rise from baseline serum creatinine of at least 2.0 mg%, we found 88 cases (a prevalence of almost 20%) or 14.5 cases per 100 admissions. Volume depletion was the most common etiology and was as severe a cause of ARF as other etiologies. There were 21 c

Because few randomized trials have been done, little is known about appropriate glycemic control in hospitalized patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and diabetes mellitus. These patients are at high risk of hypoglycemia. It is prudent to monitor glucose closely, set less-stringent blood sugar goals, avoid oral antidiabetic agents, and possibly reduce insulin dosage.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects health and life of patients. They confront anemia, hypertension, infections and cardiovascular disease. Due to these health issues, they are at risk of repeated hospitalizations. The risk factors which propel them to hospitalize are important to know, and by controlling these factors, we can impede preventable hospitalization. This case-control study included 1050 adult CKD patients, conducted in two tertiary care hospitals of Karachi. Variables included were age, gender, ethnicity, area of residence, marital status, education smoking status, comorbids, blo

BACKGROUND: Chronic liver disease (CLD) is a progressive destruction of liver tissue with subsequent necrosis that persists for at least 6 months. In Ethiopia, despite the high burden report, data on CLD is limited. The objective of this study was to assess short-term clinical outcomes in patients admitted with chronic liver disease to three tertiary teaching hospitals in Ethiopia and to identify predictors of mortality.
METHODS: A cohort of 109 patients admitted with CLD to three tertiary teaching hospitals in Ethiopia, were prospectively followed from the time of admission to 30-days of hos

Rationale: Meta-analyses have suggested the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events is significantly higher after a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbation. However, many of these studies have included a broad array of CVD events or have been limited to highly selected patient populations potentially not generalizable to the broader population of COPD. Objectives and Methods: We assessed the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) hospitalizations after COPD hospitalization compared with before COPD hospitalization and identified patient factors associated

Background Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition of multifactorial origin. The inflammatory mediators released during the progression of disease may affect all the organs of the body. Renal disease is a chronic systemic disease which may influence the progression of periodontal disease. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate and compare the prevalence of periodontal disease among individuals with chronic kidney disease undergoing maintenance hemodialysis with healthy individuals. Methodology In this cross-sectional study including 150 participants, 75 patients with d

BACKGROUND: The role of culture-independent techniques (galactomannan, (1-3)-β-d-glucan) in the early diagnosis of invasive fungal diseases (IFD) is well assessed in hematological patients, but there are no clear conclusions in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
AIMS: To study the usefulness of nonculture-based techniques in the diagnosis of IFD in COPD-patients at risk for IFD.
METHODS: A prospective observational study based on monitoring COPD patients at risk for IFD during 2007-2010 was carried out. The presence of galactomannan, (1-3)-β-d-glucan and an indirect
