Yellowstone National Park hydrothermal springs were investigated according to their organic geochemistry with a special focus on the Yellowstone hot spring dissolved organic matter (YDOM) that was solid-phase extracted. Here we show that YDOM has a unique chemodiversity that has not yet been observed anywhere else in aquatic surface environments and that Yellowstone hot springs are organic chemodiversity hot spots. Four main geochemically classified hot spring types (alkaline-chloride, mixed alkaline-chloride, acid-chloride-sulfate and travertine-precipitating) exhibited distinct organic molec

Legionella pneumophila is the cause of Legionnaires' disease, a life-threatening pneumonia that occurs after inhalation of aerosolized water containing the bacteria. Legionella growth occurs in stagnant, warm-to-hot water (77°F-113°F) that is inadequately disinfected. Piped hot spring water in Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas, USA, has naturally high temperatures (>135°F) that prevent Legionella growth, and Legionnaires' disease has not previously been associated with the park or other hot springs in the United States. During 2018-2019, Legionnaires' disease occurred in 5 persons after they

Acquisition of sporadic community-acquired legionnaires' disease has been linked to hot springs and whirlpool baths. Outbreaks of hot spring-associated legionnaires' disease were reported in Japan in the last few years. Although the mode of transmission is unclear, the presence of Legionella in hot springs may discourage hot springs resort visits by the general public. An environmental survey was conducted to determine the presence of Legionella in hot springs in Taiwan. In total, 55 water samples were collected from 19 hot springs resorts; 21% (4/19) of the hot spring resorts sampled yielded

Hot springs support diverse and interesting groups of microorganisms adapted to extreme conditions and gaining attention in biotechnological applications. However, due to limitations of cultivation methods, a majority of such extremophiles remain uncultivated and unexplored. The advent of multiple cultivation conditions and specialized culture media could possibly aid to access the unexplored microbial portion of hot springs. In the present study, different media and isolation strategies were applied to isolate hitherto unexplored bacterial taxa in the water samples collected from Unkeshwar ho

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the presence of Legionella species in hot-spring baths for feet, which have been rapidly increasing in number in Japan in recent years.
METHODS: The investigations were conducted between March 2009 and November 2011, and hot springs throughout the country were sampled. Legionella isolates were confirmed on the basis of the method described in the "Manual for the countermeasure to legionellosis, 3rd Edition." In this method, the samples were concentrated and smeared on GVPCalpha agar medium after acid treatment and cultured for 7 days at 36 degrees C. Gram-n

We report a case of fulminant pneumonia that was due to aspiration of contaminated hot spring water and was not affected by beta-lactam antibiotics. We suspected that the patient had Legionnaires' disease and treated the clinical symptoms with erythromycin. Legionellaceae could not be isolated from sputum or lung biopsy material, but an elevated titer to Legionella pneumophila serogroup 4 was found by indirect immunofluorescence test. We diagnosed the patent as having Legionnaires' disease with improved clinical symptoms. Furthermore, we went to the hot spring that he visited and tried to isol

Vittaforma corneae is an obligate intracellular fungus and can cause human ocular microsporidiosis. Although accumulating reports of V. corneae causing keratoconjunctivitis in both healthy and immunocompromised persons have been published, little is known about the organism's occurrence in aquatic environments. Limitations in detection sensitivity have meant a large sampling volume is required to detect the pathogen up to now, which is problematic. A recent study in Taiwan has shown that some individuals suffering from microsporidial keratitis (MK) were infected after exposure to the pathogen

The effect of "Kangal Hot Spring with Fish" in the treatment of psoriasis is investigated. The study was carried out on 87 patients with psoriasis vulgaris and the patients were evaluated by a dermatologist for 21 days. The evaluation of the disease was performed using PASI (Psoriasis Area and Severity Index) scores. Recurrences were investigated in the patient population, who had been previously treated in the same hot spring. The first examination scores were significantly higher than the scores of the 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 and 21 days after treatment (p < 0.01). Longer remission periods, when com

Acquisition and cycling of carbon and nitrogen among members of hot spring communities are not well understood. Metagenomic analyses of 105 communities inhabiting high temperature hot springs across Yellowstone and Iceland showed a co-distribution pattern of putatively autotrophic and/or diazotrophic (nitrogen-fixing) Aquificales and Thermus populations. Targeted enrichment of autotrophic and diazotrophic populations in an Icelandic hot spring produced a co-culture of Pampinifervens (Aquificales) that encoded carbon dioxide and nitrogen fixation pathways and Thermus (Thermales). Growth experim

Microbiological contamination of hot spring waters is a public health problem, and hot spring waters have been thought to be a potential source of Legionella infections. In this study, 209 water samples collected from 69 thermal pools of 36 hot springs in the Central Anatolia Region were examined for the presence of Legionella spp. between September and November 2001. The water samples were concentrated via filtration, and the filtrates were decontaminated by low-pH method. Then the samples were cultured on non-selective (Buffered Charcoal Yeast Extract Agar, BCYE) and selective (GVPC; BCYE su

Hypercalcemia is generally caused by primary hyperparathyroidism, malignancies, and drugs. Herein, we report a case of severe hypercalcemia due to drowning in hot springs. A 55-year-old woman was found floating in a public bath at a hotel and was admitted to a nearby hospital. The patient was intubated because of hypoxia and shock, and noradrenaline was titrated. Computed tomography revealed bilateral aspiration pneumonia. Blood tests revealed hypercalcemia (serum total calcium [Ca]: 18.7 mg/dL). Hyperparathyroidism, malignancy, and drug-related factors were ruled out as the causes of hypercal

Screening of metagenomic library from Taptapani Hot Spring (Odisha) yielded a positive lipase clone (pUC-lip479). Sequence analysis showed an ORF (RK-lip479) of 416 amino acid residues which was overexpressed in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3). Optimum pH and temperature of purified lipase RK-lip479 were 8.0 and 65 °C, respectively, and found to be stable over a pH range of 7.0-9.0 and temperatures 55-75 °C. RK-lip479 could hydrolyse a wide range of 4-nitrophenyl esters (4-nitrophenyoctanoate, 4-nitrophenyldodecanoate, 4-nitrophenylpalmitate, 4-nitrophenylmyristate and 4-nitrophenylstearate), and

Hot springs, hot-water bathing, and saunas are widely practiced forms of acute heat exposure and are often perceived as health-promoting. However, emergency clinicians frequently encounter patients in whom these exposures precipitate syncope, hypotension, drowning/aspiration, heat-related illness, and renal or electrolyte disturbances. This narrative review integrates these modalities within a unified "acute heat exposure" framework and summarizes pathophysiology and clinical implications from an emergency medicine perspective. We searched PubMed/MEDLINE from inception to January 2026 using co

Several metazoans live in extreme environments, but relatively little is known about the adaptations that these extremophiles have evolved to tolerate their conditions. The wetsalts tiger beetle, Cicindelidia hemorrhagica (LeConte) (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae), is found in the western USA, including the active geothermal springs in Yellowstone National Park (YNP). Here, we characterize behavioral, ecophysiological, and morphological traits of adult C. hemorrhagica living on hot springs in YNP compared to adults living in a non-hot spring environment in Idaho. Individuals in YNP behaviorally warm

Understanding abiotic carbon fixation provides insights into early Earth's carbon cycles and life's emergence in terrestrial hot springs, where iron sulfide (FeS), similar to cofactors in metabolic enzymes, may catalyze prebiotic synthesis. However, the role of FeS-mediated carbon fixation in such conditions remains underexplored. Here, we investigate the catalytic behaviors of FeS (pure and doped with Ti, Ni, Mn, and Co), which are capable of H2-driven CO2 reduction to methanol under simulated hot spring vapor-zone conditions, using an anaerobic flow chamber connected to a gas chromatograph.

Every year, bacterial infections lead to over 7.7 million deaths, with 4.95 million of these caused by drug-resistant organisms. This growing resistance emphasizes the urgent need for a different approach to combat bacterial infections. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) offer a promising solution due to their unique mechanisms of action. However, their clinical application is often limited by their instability under extreme physiological conditions like high temperatures. To address this limitation, this study focuses on extracting and characterizing AMPs from thermophilic bacteria, specifically B
