Hot surface temperatures of domestic appliances.

BACKGROUND: Domestic appliances are burning people. In the European Union, accidents requiring hospital treatment due to burns from hot objects account for between 0 and 1% of all such accidents. Young children are particularly at risk. These reported accidents requiring hospital treatment are also likely to be a small proportion of the total number of burns from hot objects. RESEARCH METHOD: There is a lack of hard evidence about the level of accidents, typical consumer expectation and use, and on the state of the art of appliances. Results of technical laboratory tests carried out on produc

Hot news: temperature-sensitive humans explain hereditary disease.

The skin-cancer-prone hereditary disease xeroderma pigmentosum is typically characterized by defective nucleotide excision repair (NER) of DNA. However, since all subunits of the core basal transcription factor TFIIH are required for both RNA polymerase II basal transcription and NER, some mutations affecting genes that encode TFIIH subunits can result in clinical phenotypes associated with defective basal transcription. Among these is a syndrome called trichothiodystrophy (TTD) in which the prominent features are brittle hair and nails, and dry scaly skin. A recent study provides dramatic sup

Blowing Hot and Cold: Body Temperature and the Microbiome.

The intestinal microbiome influences host health, and its responsiveness to diet and disease is increasingly well studied. However, our understanding of the factors driving microbiome variation remain limited. Temperature is a core factor that controls microbial growth, but its impact on the microbiome remains to be fully explored. Although commonly assumed to be a constant 37°C, normal body temperatures vary across the animal kingdom, while individual body temperature is affected by multiple factors, including circadian rhythm, age, environmental temperature stress, and immune activation. Is core temperature the trigger of a menopausal hot flush?

OBJECTIVE: Menopausal hot flushes negatively impact quality of life and may be a biomarker of cardiovascular and metabolic disease risk; therefore understanding the physiology of hot flushes is important. Current thinking is that a small elevation (∼0.03-0.05C) in core temperature surpasses a sweating threshold (that is reduced in the menopause), sweating is activated, and a hot flush ensues. Nevertheless, more recent studies examining thermoregulatory control question whether core temperature per se can explain the trigger for a hot flush. The primary aim of this study was to assess the contr

Hot Deformation Behavior and Hot Processing Map Analysis of Q420DR Low-Temperature Pressure Vessel Steel.

Nominally isothermal compression tests were performed on Q420DR low-temperature pressure-vessel steel at 900-1150 °C and strain rates of 0.05-10 s-1, with a target true strain of 0.7. The effects of temperature and strain rate on flow behavior were investigated. Flow stress increased with decreasing temperature and increasing strain rate, while higher temperatures and lower strain rates favored more pronounced flow softening. A peak-stress-based Arrhenius-type constitutive relationship was established, yielding an apparent hot-deformation activation energy of 385.987 kJ·mol-1. Processing maps

Hot air breathing: effects of elevated wet bulb temperatures on tissue temperatures of the mouth.

Six healthy young men breathed room air or one of nine hot humid air conditions on separate days for one hour while walking on a treadmill (40% VO2 max). Inspired wet bulb temperatures ranged from 18.9 (room air) to 49.3 degrees C. Tissue temperatures in the mouth were measured by means of thermocouples placed on the tongue and hard palate. Analysis of variance on repeated measures showed significant increases in both tongue and hard palate tissue temperatures (p less than 0.001) as a result of increasing wet bulb temperatures; however, core temperature and heart rate were not affected (p grea

Oral environment temperature changes induced by cold/hot liquid intake.

The use of NiTi shape memory alloys, introduced into orthodontics because of their ability to develop light continuous forces that prove more effective than heavy intermittent forces in the teeth movement, requires the mastering of the functional properties of NiTi wires. More specifically, the recovery force acting on the teeth is a sensitive function of temperature: knowledge of oral temperature modifications is therefore required to understand the stress state modification felt during orthodontic therapy. The temperature modifications induced by cold or hot drink intake in the oral cavity w

The hot and the cold: unravelling the variable response of plant respiration to temperature.

When predicting the effects of climate change, global carbon circulation models that include a positive feedback effect of climate warming on the carbon cycle often assume that (1) plant respiration increases exponentially with temperature (with a constant Q10) and (2) that there is no acclimation of respiration to long-term changes in temperature. In this review, we show that these two assumptions are incorrect. While Q10 does not respond systematically to elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations, other factors such as temperature, light, and water availability all have the potential to influe

An evaluation of a program to reduce home hot tap water temperatures.

Children are more likely to be hospitalised because of burns from hot liquids than from contact with fire and flames. Many of these hot liquid burns are from contact with hot tap water, usually in the home. Hot tap water burns to young children can be prevented completely by lowering the delivery temperature of the hot tap water. This study reports on the evaluation of a program designed to lower the temperature of home hot tap water in Dunedin, New Zealand. In conjunction with a national media campaign, the program provided an educational intervention to households with young children. Before

Superimposing the waves diffracted from two similar hot and cold wires provides the temperature profile around the hot one.

When two similar small objects that are installed in the arms of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer are illuminated in such a way that the image of one object in the second beam splitter is located on the other object, the diffracted waves from the objects are exactly superimposed in the interference field. The superimposed diffraction patterns disappear for a phase difference equal to an odd multiple of pi. The phase change induced by imposing changes on the medium surrounding one of the objects can be determined very accurately only by measuring the intensity distribution that appears on the supe

[Effects of opium peptide system on the temperature regulation of mice under dry-hot environment with different temperature].

The Kunming mice were selected as subjects. Animals were allowed to move and drink freely. The Naloxone(0.02 mg/g) was injected by abdominal cavity. The ability to body temperature stable by mice under the environment with high temperature (41 degrees C, 43 degrees C) was observed. The results showed that after obstructing opium receptor by Naloxone, the ability mentioned above was reduced obviously.

Minimum temperature felt as hot (MTH)--a new concept for grading the loss of temperature sensation in leprosy patients.

In order to grade the loss of the temperature sensation in the skin of leprosy patients, a newly designed instrument called the Temperature-Sensation-Testing-and-Grading device has been employed to determine the minimum temperature felt as hot (MTH) at the skin area. The MTH in normal subjects was observed to vary from one region of the body to another; it was generally higher on the distal parts of the extremities compared to the proximal parts; and it was also higher on the lower extremities compared to the upper ones. The abdomen and the back generally had the lowest values. There were no v

Polyphosphate Attenuates Oxidative Stress to Support Temperature Adaptability in Hot Spring Cyanobacteria.

Thermophilic cyanobacteria successfully colonize thermal gradients within hot springs, implying evolved mechanisms to cope with temperature-induced oxidative stress. Although polyphosphate (polyP) is known to contribute to oxidative stress resistance, its specific role in thermophilic cyanobacteria remains poorly understood. To address this, this study established a temperature gradient (30-70 °C) and used phloretin (polyP synthesis inhibitor) plus exogenous polyP to investigate polyP metabolism, redox homeostasis, photosynthetic function, and growth of Thermosynechococcus sp. The effect of nitrile gloves on temperature perception during hot water immersion.

INTRODUCTION: Scalds account for 40 % of burn injuries in developed countries, with a subset occurring during caregiving activities, particularly when gloves are worn. Gloves, a standard precaution against infection and body fluid exposure, may impair sensory feedback critical for detecting temperature changes, potentially increasing the risk of burns during personal care tasks. METHODS: This study investigated the impact of glove use on heat perception. Twelve healthy participants (6 male, 6 female) immersed their index fingers in water baths set at 40°C, 45°C, 50°C, 55°C, and 60°C. Heat per

Analysis of temperature distributions of interstitial hyperthermia using a hot water system.

PURPOSE: Interstitial hyperthermia is being increasingly used as an adjunct to brachytherapy in the treatment of implantable tumors. Of the several interstitial hyperthermia systems available, perhaps the simplest to use are the circulating hot water systems. An analysis of the thermal distributions obtained during our initial experience with interstitial hyperthermia using steel needles and the KHS-9 hot water system was therefore undertaken. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Between September 1988 and June 1991, 23 patients were treated with interstitial Iridium-192 high dose-rate brachytherapy immedi

The effect of hot beverages, cold beverages, and chewing gum on oral temperature.

BACKGROUND: A prospective blood donor's oral temperature is affected by external stimuli such as drinking a hot or cold beverage or chewing gum. These stimuli can cause a deferral or an inappropriate acceptance for a certain unknown time. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Ten volunteer subjects were exposed to each of the three stimuli in separate studies. Oral and tympanic membrane temperatures were taken before exposure, immediately after exposure, and at various times until the subject's temperature returned to baseline. RESULTS: The drinking of a hot beverage caused an immediate mean temperature

Hot Gas Pressure Forming of Ti-55 High Temperature Titanium Alloy Tubular Component.

In this paper, hot gas pressure forming (HGPF) of Ti-55 high temperature titanium alloy was studied. The hot deformation behavior was studied by uniaxial tensile tests at temperatures ranging from 750 to 900 °C with strain rates ranging from 0.001 to 0.05 s-1, and the microstructure evolution during tensile tests was characterized by electron backscatter diffraction. Finite element (FE) simulation of HGPF was carried out to study the effect of axial feeding on thickness distribution. Forming tests were performed to validate this process for Ti-55 alloy. Results show that when the temperature w
