Oregon's Toxic Household Products Law.

In 1991, Oregon became the first state in the U.S. to require the addition of an aversive agent to ethylene glycol-containing antifreeze and methanol-containing windshield wiper fluid. This new law, entitled "Toxic Household Products (THP) Act," was designed to reduce pediatric and animal poisonings from accidental ingestion of these two potentially lethal consumer automotive products. While not the stated intention of the law, addition of aversive agents to consumer automotive products could also reduce adult poisonings associated with intentional (suicides or alcoholics ingesting methanol-co

Cobalt content of household cleaning products.

In our Department, the incidence of sensitization to cobalt has more than doubled in the last 5 years. 28% of cobalt-sensitive patients showed no other sensitivity. Of isolated cobalt sensitive patients, 68% were housewives. We determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry with a graphite camera, the cobalt and nickel content of the 30 most popular Spanish domestic detergents and cleaners sold in 1985. 78.6% of them contain considerable amounts of cobalt.

[Allergic diseases in workers producing household chemical products].

The examination covered 143 individuals engaged into production of synthetic foaming and paste-forming detergents, cosmetic and hygienic aerosols. Polls, immunologic surveys and specific allergologic examination revealed that 40% of the subjects had immunologic disorders and allergies, and 72% of this share was occupied by the workers of the aerosol production. Skin allergic diseases were prevalent. The risk factors for allergic diseases could be traced to congenital propensity, joint effects of multiple chemicals. All the employees at placement should undergo specific allergologic examination

Sensitive skin and stratum corneum reactivity to household cleaning products.

Products intended for individuals with sensitive skin are being increasingly developed by formulators of household cleaning products. However, there is currently no consensus about the definition and recognition of the biological basis of sensitive skin. We sought to determine the relation between the nature of environmental threat perceived as aggressive by panelists, and the stratum corneum reactivity to household cleaning products as measured by the corneosurfametry test. Results indicate substantial differences in irritancy potential between proprietary products. Corneosurfametry data show

Fatal ethanol intoxication from household products not intended for ingestion.

Fatal acute ethanol intoxication is frequently encountered in medicolegal practice. Although the vast majority of acute ethanol toxicity deaths follow the ingestion of conventional alcoholic beverages, ethanol can be obtained from a variety of commercial products, which often contain high levels of ethyl alcohol but are not manufactured or designed for consumption. Such products may be easily purchased in locales where statutory limitations restrict liquor availability on Sundays or during the early morning hours. Several acute ethanol fatalities have been encountered in New Mexico that were d

Association between exposure to antimicrobial household products and allergic symptoms.

OBJECTIVES: Antimicrobial chemicals are used in a variety of household and personal care products. Exposure to antimicrobial household products has been hypothesized to lead to allergic diseases in children. METHODS: We investigated antimicrobial household product exposure and allergic symptoms in Korean children. An antimicrobial exposure (AE) score was derived. To examine the symptoms of allergic diseases (current wheeze, current rhinitis, and current eczema) in the past 12 months, we used a questionnaire based on the core module of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childre

[Poisoning with household cleaning products in a city in Northeast Brazil].

This study analyzes toxic exposures to household cleaning products based on data from the Center for Notification and Treatment of Poisoning (CEATOX) in Campina Grande, Paraíba State, Brazil, from 2007 to 2010. The data were collected from the reporting forms from the Information System on Notifiable Diseases (SINAN), analyzed with SPSS (Version 17). Chemical identification was performed in urine samples using high-resolution chromatography techniques (GC-MS and HPLC-UV). Six hundred and sixty cases of poisoning were reported, with pesticides as the principal causal agents (42.2%). Poisoning w

[Preventive measures against health damage due to chemicals in household products].

Chemicals in household products have been paid much attention as the main cause of health damage in consumers, such as allergic contact dermatitis. Preventive measures against health damage due to chemicals in fabrics, plastics and rubber products for household use, are reviewed, focusing on 1) the incidence of health damage due to household products, 2) causative product-chemical investigation, and 3) case studies on skin damage.

[Modified Method for Measuring Levels of Organomercury Compounds in Household Products].

In Japan, the use of organomercury compounds is regulated in textile products (diapers, diaper covers, bibs, underwear, sanitary pads, sanitary panties, gloves, hosiery), adhesive, paint, wax, and shoe polish buffers. This is stated in Act No. 112 of 1973, 'Act on Control of Household Products Containing Harmful Substances'. In this study, we modified the currently used official method. The modified method uses cyclohexane/ethyl acetate (3 : 1) as the extraction solvent instead of carbon tetrachloride. The phenyl mercuric acetate as the organomercury compounds was quantified by a direct therma

Decontamination of fluid milk containing Bacillus spores using commercial household products.

Although commercial sanitizers can inactivate bacterial spores in food processing environments, relatively little data exist as to the decontamination of products and surfaces by consumers using commercial household products. Should a large scale bioterrorism incident occur in which consumer food products were contaminated with a pathogenic sporeformer such as Bacillus anthracis, there may be a need to decontaminate these products before disposal as liquid or solid waste. Studies were conducted to test the efficacy of commercial household products for inactivating spores of Bacillus cereus (us

Identification and determination of disinfection byproducts in chlorine-containing household cleansing products.

Seven halogenated volatile organic compounds (HVOCs) and two haloacetic acids were detected and quantified in 15 household products, including sodium hypochlorite, by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Chloroform was detected in a range of 0.2-30.2 mg kg-1 in all products, and carbon tetrachloride was observed in 13 samples in a range of 0.05-352 mg kg-1. Dichloroacetic acid and trichloroacetic acid were also detected up to 94 and 146 mg kg-1 in household products. The estimated human exposures of chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, dichloroacetic acid and trichloroacetic acid were ca

Factors limiting traditional household duck production in Bangladesh.

A cross sectional survey of duck production was carried out in 2002 on 771 traditional, semiscavenging household duck farms on the coastal Island of Hatia. We determined the socioeconomic characteristics of duck farmers and their management systems, identified the factors associated with egg production, and measured the level of selected duck diseases and current preventive strategies. Household family size varied from 1 to 14 individuals and women were the main caretakers of ducks. Around 34% of keepers were illiterate. Most duck products (eggs and meat; 85%) were sold at the local market. Du

A profile of unintentional poisoning caused by household cleaning products, disinfectants and pesticides.

Unintentional poisoning occurred mainly among children. The leading cause of such poisoning in Brazil, among consumer products was household cleaning products. For this study 2810 calls made to two poison control centers in the State of Rio de Janeiro between January 2000 and December 2002 were analyzed. Children under five were the most vulnerable group. More boys under 10 suffered accidental poisoning than girls, although above this age, the distribution was inverted. The calls received by poison control centers were mainly from health services within the first two hours following poisoning.

Comparison of titratable acid/alkaline reserve and pH in potentially caustic household products.

Exposure to caustic agents is a common problem, affecting thousands of individuals annually. Despite this incidence, the factors responsible for the production of injury remain poorly defined. Although extremes of pH seem to correlate well with the production of esophageal lesions, pH alone fails to explain the damage resulting from exposure to agents with near neutral pH, such as soldering flux containing zinc chloride. We determined titratable acid/alkaline reserve (TAR) in 38 potentially caustic household agents. A subset of these products was evaluated in an in-vitro canine esophageal mode

Risk of human exposure to metals in some household hygienic products in Nigeria.

This study presents data on the levels and risk of human exposure to Cd, Pb, Cr, Ni, Cu, Co, Mn, Zn and Fe in some popular brands of household hygienic products (HHPs) available in Nigeria. The HHPs were digested with a mixture of HNO3, HCl and HClO4 in a ratio of 1:3:1 and the concentrations of the selected metals were quantified by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The metal concentrations (in μg g-1) in these products ranged from 0.4 to 5.4, <0.09-47.0, <0.12-43.7, <0.06-7.5, <0.12-9.5, <0.06-15.0, <0.09-24.5, 9.0-675 and 62.4-434 for Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu, Co, Ni, Mn, Zn and Fe respectively.
