Housing quality, housing instability, and maternal mental health.

Poor housing conditions and residential instability have been associated with distress among women; however, this association could be the result of other social factors related to housing, such as intimate partner violence (IPV) and economic hardship. We examined associations of housing conditions and instability with maternal depression and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) while accounting for IPV and economic hardship in the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N = 2,104). In the third study wave, interviewers rated indoor housing quality, including housing deterioration (e.g., pee

Development of a Measure of Housing and Housing Services.

The Housing Program Measure (HPM) was designed to document critical elements of a range of housing program types and associated services. Qualitative methods, including literature review and open-ended interviews, were used to determine pertinent HPM domains and to develop the pool of items. The measure was pre-tested, and reliability and validity analyses were applied to revise and strengthen the measure. The resulting measure furthers homelessness research by providing a tool that can be used to define housing and housing services interventions across diverse projects and disciplines, to fac

Why housing?

Housing/lack of housing and HIV are powerfully linked. Housing occupies an important place in the causal chains linking poverty and inequality, and HIV risk and outcomes of infection. The articles in this Special Supplement of AIDS and Behavior confirm the impact of homelessness, and poor or unstable housing, on HIV/AIDS, and challenge scientists to test and policy makers to implement the promise of housing as an innovative response to the epidemic. In order to influence the development of policies on housing to benefit at-risk or HIV-infected persons, however, proponents must justify why this

Subsidized Housing: The Panacea to Canada's Housing Affordability Crisis?

Although increasing subsidized housing has been proposed as a solution to Canada's housing affordability crisis, few studies have investigated how access to subsidized housing affects the housing circumstances of Canadians. Using microdata from the 2021 Canadian Census, we compare children's odds of having unaffordable, overcrowded, and inadequate housing by residence in subsidized housing and family structure. For children in two-parent families, living in subsidized housing is associated with lower odds of having unaffordable housing but higher odds of having inadequate and overcrowded housi

Housing First or no housing? Housing and homelessness at the end of alcohol and drug treatment.

BACKGROUND: The rate of alcohol and drug dependency is high among homeless persons in Norway as well as in other Western societies. National homeless surveys also show a certain correlation between discharge from institutions and homelessness. However, the rate of homelessness versus the rate with fixed abode at the end of specialised alcohol and drug treatment has not been examined using quantitative methods. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in alcohol and drug treatment units in the national health services and private clinics. The survey investigates the housing outcome at t

Housing and house-dust mites.

Because the mite-allergen content in homes is highly variable even in the same geographic area, we tried to determine which variables influence mite infestation. We evaluated mite-allergen content in bedding relative to housing conditions and living habits. This cross-sectional study included 108 homes. Housing conditions were assessed by an architect and living habits by a researcher specialized in social and family economics. Group I allergen level was measured on the mattress dust with monoclonal antibodies, and relative humidity (RH) was monitored in the bedroom during a 2-week period. Hom

Correlates of Housing Sustainability Among Youth Placed Into Permanent Supportive Housing and Rapid Re-Housing: A Survival Analysis.

PURPOSE: Youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) are vulnerable to multiple adverse health outcomes. Connecting YEH with housing is critical to addressing youth homelessness and to preventing long-term negative health consequences among this vulnerable population. Using administrative data, this study aims to explore correlates of YEH's sustainability in two major housing programs: permanent supportive housing (PSH) and rapid re-housing (RRH) programs. METHODS: This study used Homelessness Management Information System administrative data collected from 16 communities across the U.S. between Ja

Moving Beyond Housing: Service Implications for Veterans Entering Permanent Supportive Housing.

As a result of efforts to end homelessness among U.S. veterans, more former service members are entering permanent supportive housing (PSH). While PSH has been successfully used to house homeless veterans, more research is needed about services beyond housing placement and retention. This study uses the Gelberg-Andersen behavioral model for vulnerable populations to determine associations between predisposing, enabling, and need characteristics and recent service use (i.e., services to satisfy basic needs, occupational development, financial, healthcare, mental health) among unaccompanied home

Housing conditions and respiratory health in a Boston public housing community.

OBJECTIVES: To determine frequency of and possible associations between environmental housing factors and self-reported respiratory symptoms in public housing. METHODS: We used a community-participatory method in which trained residents conducted in-person interviews with a random sample of 53 households in one housing development in Boston, Massachusetts. RESULTS: Environmental factors suspected of affecting respiratory health that were reported by more than 30 percent of respondents included: Moisture (43 percent), mold (43 percent), cracks in walls, floors and ceilings (49 percent), sewag

The relationship between housing subsidies and supportive housing on neighborhood distress and housing satisfaction: does drug use make a difference?

BACKGROUND: Since the 1970s, the dominant model for U.S. federal housing policy has shifted from unit-based programs to tenant-based vouchers and certificates. Because housing vouchers allow recipients to move to apartments and neighborhoods of their choice, such programs were designed to improve the ability of poor families to move into neighborhoods with less concentrated poverty. However, little research has examined whether housing voucher recipients live in less distressed neighborhoods than those without housing vouchers. There is much reason to believe that drug users may not be able to

Improving Population Health Through Housing Policy: Lessons From the Public Housing Program.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points Housing is a fundamental social determinant of health and is particularly amenable to policy intervention. Policies that seek to improve health should improve housing quality, affordability, and stability. The public housing program has improved health across the life course, but the structure of the program currently limits its applicability. Public housing can be adapted to foster policy innovation at the state level. A renewed public housing program should (1) serve a broader income spectrum; (2) integrate across levels of government; (3) capitalize on the social s

Reunifying families, cutting costs: housing-child welfare partnerships for permanent supportive housing.

In the absence of an adequate supply of affordable, quality housing, child welfare agencies are placed in the unenviable position of separating families to protect children from the debilitating effects of homelessness. This article presents recommendations for costeffective housing-child welfare partnerships that will shift the burden of providing adequate housing back to housing agencies. These partnerships have the potential to move child welfare agencies closer to achieving permanence and well-being for all children.

Housing Insecurity Among Latinxs.

Latinxs are vulnerable to experiencing housing insecurity and less likely to receive public benefits, such as health insurance, which can impact a household's economic resources. We inform homelessness prevention by examining the association of social risks and healthcare access with housing insecurity for Latinxs. Our sample consisted of 120,362 participants under the age of 65, of which 17.3% were Latinx. Weighted chi-squared tests and logistic regression were used to examine predictors of housing insecurity. Housing insecurity was measured as worry about paying for housing. Latinxs were alm

Supportive housing in Brooklyn.

Since 1977, Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers of New York City has been creating and maintaining supportive housing offerings for at-risk populations, such as individuals with HIV/AIDS, those with substance abuse challenges, and the mentally ill. By providing a continuum of medical and social services, the organization aims to help residents stabilize and rebuild their lives. Saint Vincent sees empowerment as a key step toward helping individuals maintain their health, re-enter the community, seek employment, and pursue other goals. Some of the supportive services Saint Vincent offers in

Research in supported housing.

BACKGROUND: De-institutionalization has led to the provision of various forms of housing with or without support for people with mental illness in the community. In this paper, we review the conceptual issues related to the provision of supported housing schemes, the characteristics of residents, research methods and outcomes, and the factors influencing the quality of care provided. METHODS: A Medline and hand search of published literature was complemented by information derived from contacting expert researchers in the field. FINDINGS: There is considerable diversity of models of supporte

Perceived housing inadequacy and health: Cumulative and gendered effects beyond objective housing standards.

This study investigates whether cumulative exposure to perceived inadequate housing conditions is associated with multiple health outcomes, independent of objective housing standards. We further examine whether these associations differ by gender. Using data from the Korea Welfare Panel Study (KoWePS, 2006-2022; N = 22,975 individuals; 177,267 person-years), we constructed a cumulative measure of subjective housing inadequacy based on the number of consecutive waves in which respondents reported lacking adequate soundproofing, ventilation, natural lighting, or heating. We employed individual f

Predictors of change in housing status over 12 months among individuals using emergency shelters, temporary housing or permanent housing in Quebec, Canada.

Homelessness is an ongoing societal and public health problem in Canada and other countries. Housing services help homeless individuals along the transition towards stable housing, yet few studies have assessed factors that predict change in individual housing trajectories. This study identified predictors of change in housing status over 12 months for a sample of 270 currently or formerly homeless individuals using emergency shelters, temporary housing (TH) or permanent housing (PH) resources in Quebec. Participants recruited from 27 community or public organisations were interviewed between

Housing versus treatment first for supportive housing participants with substance use disorders: A comparison of housing and public service use outcomes.

Background: Homeless persons with substance use disorders (SUD) have high disease risk, poor access to health care, and are frequent users of Medicaid and other social services. Low-demand supportive housing with no prerequisites for treatment or sobriety has been shown to improve housing stability and decrease public service use for chronically homeless persons with serious mental illness (SMI) and chronic medical conditions. The impact of low-demand housing on individuals with SUD but without co-occurring SMI has been little studied. This evaluation compares housing retention and use of cris
