Human T lymphotropic virus-1 infection.

Human T lymphotropic virus-1 (HTLV-1) is a retrovirus which infects T lymphocytes (CD4+) to cause adult T cell leukaemia/lymphoma (ATL), tropical spastic para-paresis and several other HTLV-1 associated disorders. ATL has been reported worldwide but areas of high incidence include Japan (particularly the south-west), Central and South America, northern Iran, West and Central Africa and Melanesia. In the general Japanese population, HTLV-1 carriage is 0.1% but this can be as high as 50% in endemic areas. Six per 10000 carriers are estimated to progress to ATL each year. The three major routes o

Human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 infection.

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1) is aetiologically associated with adult T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma (ATL). HTLV-1 infection can also lead to various non-malignant diseases, for example, HTLV-1 associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis and HTLV-1 uveitis. HTLV-1 is endemic in southern Japan and the Caribbean. HTLV-1 infection is mainly transmitted by either breast-feeding, sexual intercourse or blood transfusions. Primary prevention of HTLV-1 in endemic areas by screening of blood and by refraining from breast-feeding have been successful. The incidence of ATL is rather l

Human T Lymphotropic Virus 1-Associated Myelopathy: Overview of Human T Cell Lymphotropic Virus-1/2 Tests and Potential Biomarkers.

Human T cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV)-1-associated myelopathy is a chronic, disabling inflammatory disorder of the spinal cord caused by HTLV-1 infection. The diagnosis of HTLV-1-associated myelopathy (HAM) is based on clinical and laboratorial findings. The disease is characterized by the presence of spastic paraparesis associated with detection of anti-HTLV-1 antibodies or HTLV-1 genomes in blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). New inflammatory markers have been proposed for the diagnosis and assessment of the prognosis of HAM. We reviewed the laboratory diagnostic and potential surrogate ma

Human T-lymphotropic virus 1 (HTLV-1) infection--dermatological implications.

Human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is a type C retrovirus primarily endemic to Japan, Central and South America, the Middle East, regions of Africa, and the Caribbean. Currently, an estimated 10-20 million people worldwide are infected with this virus. Although the majority of infected individuals remain asymptomatic, HTLV-1 is the causative agent of a number of disorders, notably adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) and a progressive demyelinating neurological disorder, HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). In addition to ATLL and HAM/TSP, HTLV-1 has be

Infection of defective human T-lymphotropic virus type 1.

In a previous study, we reported that an identical defective provirus had integrated into multiple sites of the genome of a representative human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) cell line, MT-2. A possible explanation for this may be the repeated infection of this defective provirus to a cell. Therefore, we attempted to determine whether a defective provirus could transmit during the co-culture of HTLV-1 uninfected human T-cell line, Jurkat, with MT-2 cells treated with mitomycin C. As a result, we established not only a cell line with the integration of one complete provirus, but also a c

Human T cell lymphotropic virus type 1 in Zimbabwe.

Human T cell lymphotrophic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) causes myelopathy and adult T cell leukaemia. Knowledge of its distribution in Africa is limited. We performed HTLV-1 testing by enzyme immunoassay, with immunofluorescence assay confirmation, on 931 blood donors, 88 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) seronegative patients with clinical features of acquired immune deficiency syndrome, 23 multi-transfused haemophiliacs, 8 patients with haematological malignancies, and 32 patients with neurological disease. One blood donor and 3 neurological patients, all 3 with spinal cord syndromes, were HTLV-1-

Juvenile human T lymphotropic virus type 1-associated myelopathy.

We report the cases of 5 adolescents with human T lymphotropic virus type 1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis, acquired in all but 1 case from the mother. The first symptom in all patients was difficulty in running, which was present for many years before the final diagnosis was made. Follow-up showed an indolent progression, regardless of treatment strategy.

[Human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 uveitis in children].

We report here five pediatric patients with human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-I) uveitis. The patients were one boy and four girls aged between 3 and 14 years. The transmission route was considered to be breast feeding from their mothers. All patients had unilateral uveitis and the ocular symptoms were similar to those in HTLV-I uveitis in adults. The ocular inflammation responded to therapy with topical or systemic corticosteroids, but recurred in three patients. HTLV-I provirus DNA was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from infiltrating cells in the anterior chamber in one pa

[Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1(HTLV-1)-associated myelopathy].

HTLV-1-associated myelopathy (HAM), also known as tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP), is a chronic progressive demyelinating disease that affects the spinal cord and white matter of the central nervous system. The lifetime incidence of HAM in HTLV-1 carriers is estimated to be less than 5%. Typical time of onset is in the fourth decade of life, with a female-to-male rate of 2:1. Gait disturbance and weakness and stiffness of the lower limbs are common presenting signs and symptoms of HAM. Lower extremities are affected to a much greater degree than upper extremities. Spasticity may be moderate

Human T Cell Lymphotropic Virus Type 1 and Human T Cell Lymphotropic Virus Type 2 Mortality in the Shipibo-Konibo People.

High rates of human T cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) and human T cell lymphotropic virus type 2 (HTLV-2) infections have been reported among Andean and Amazonian Peruvian indigenous populations in Peru. The Shipibo-Konibo people are the third-largest Amazonian indigenous group living in Peru. By using data from two observational studies conducted in the Shipibo-Konibo community, we estimated that the risk of all-cause death at 12 years was 3.11 times higher (95% CI: 1.58-6.10) for people with HTLV-1 infection compared with those with HTLV-2 infection or without HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 infec

Hematological changes in human lymphotropic-T virus type 1 carriers.

The human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1), isolated in 1980, causes T-cell leukemia/lymphoma in adulthood, a type of lymphoproliferative disease, and chronic HTLV-1-associated myelopathy, a disease that causes paralysis of the lower limbs, which occur in about 5% of cases in this viral infection. This study aimed to establish the hematological profile of patients with HTLV-1 infection in Belém do Pará, describing the hematological parameters under study, estimating the frequency of lymphocytic atypical, and associating the hematological profile with diseases and symptoms. Hematologic data

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 and its oncogenesis.

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is the etiologic agent of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL), a rapidly progressing clonal malignancy of CD4+ T lymphocytes. Exploring the host-HTLV-1 interactions and the molecular mechanisms underlying HTLV-1-mediated tumorigenesis is critical for developing efficient therapies against the viral infection and associated leukemia/lymphoma. It has been demonstrated to date that several HTLV-1 proteins play key roles in the cellular transformation and immortalization of infected T lymphocytes. Of note, the HTLV-1 oncoprotein Tax inhibits the inn

Human T lymphotropic virus type 1 uveitis after Graves' disease.

A distinct clinical entity of uveitis associated with human T lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-I) has been reported previously. During the period between January 1989 and April 1992, 93 patients were observed with HTLV-I uveitis and a significant correlation was found between Graves' disease and HTLV-I uveitis. Sixteen of the 93 patients with HTLV-I uveitis (17.2%) had a previous history of Graves' disease. Fifteen patients were female (15/60, 25.0%) and one was male (1/33, 3.0%). Interestingly, uveitis occurred after the onset of Graves' disease in all cases. On the other hand, none of 222 pat

Sexual transmission of human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1.

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is endemic in many parts of the world and is primarily transmitted through sexual intercourse or from mother to child. Sexual transmission occurs more efficiently from men to women than women to men and might be enhanced by sexually transmitted diseases that cause ulcers and result in mucosal ruptures, such as syphilis, herpes simplex type 2 (HSV-2), and chancroid. Other sexually transmitted diseases might result in the recruitment of inflammatory cells and could increase the risk of HTLV-1 acquisition and transmission. Additionally, factors that

Human T Lymphotropic virus-1 associated gastrointestinal histoplasmosis in Peru.

We report a 72-year-old patient with chronic diarrhoea and histologic evidence of gastrointestinal histoplasmosis. He had no history of HIV or of taking immunosuppressive drugs. The patient was found to be a carrier of Human T-lymphotropic virus-1, a condition associated with inflammatory, lymphoproliferative, and opportunistic infectious diseases. To our knowledge, there are only three previous cases reporting this coinfection and this is the first documented case with gastrointestinal involvement.

Human T-lymphotropic virus 1 associated with adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma.

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) is an uncommon neoplasm of mature T lymphocytes associated with infection by human T-lymphotropic virus 1 (HTLV-1), which is increasing in incidence in areas of the United States with large immigrant populations. Human T-lymphotrophic virus 1 infection is asymptomatic in most patients and has been associated with ATLL as well as tropical spastic paraparesis. Because there is considerable histologic overlap with other cutaneous T-cell lymphomas, high suspicion and clinical features must be present to make the diagnosis of ATLL.

Infection With Human T-Lymphotropic Virus 1 (HTLV-1) in Ivory Coast.

Human T-lymphotropic virus 1 (HTLV-1) is a retrovirus that originally jumped from Asian and African monkeys to humans. Africa is the world region with the largest population infected with HTLV-1. However, most data about HTLV-1 infection rates in endemic African countries are scarce and old. A rapid test for HTLV antibodies (Assure HTLV-I/II, MP Biomedicals, Singapore) was used for screening blood collected from pregnant women and persons living with HIV (PLwH) who consecutively attended a large outpatient clinic in Yamoussoukro, the capital of Ivory Coast, during the summer of 2025. Human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) was the first oncogenic human retrovirus identified in humans which infects at least 10-15 million people worldwide. Large HTLV-1 endemic areas exist in Southern Japan, the Caribbean, Central and South America, the Middle East, Melanesia, and equatorial regions of Africa. HTLV-1 TAX viral protein is thought to play a critical role in HTLV-1 associated diseases.
