One health and human animal-bond intervention strategies- assessing veterinary-social service collaborations.

This study evaluates a novel interdisciplinary outreach model integrating veterinary care, social work, and public health services to serve unhoused populations and their companion animals in Topeka, Kansas. Grounded in structural vulnerability theory and One Health principles, the project examined the Street Dog Coalition's (SDC) partnership with the Mobile Access Partnership (MAP), focusing on how the human-animal bond functions as a catalyst for trust, engagement, and care continuity. Using a qualitatively driven, mixed-methods design, the research team conducted 12 semi-structured intervie

Case report: A community case study of the human-animal bond in animal-assisted therapy: the experiences of psychiatric prisoners with therapy dogs.

Prisoners frequently experience chronic loneliness and lack social support, which can exacerbate their struggles with incarceration. According to attachment theory, individuals who are insecurely attached may be more likely to develop unstable relationships and engage in antisocial behavior as adults. In 2015 an animal-assisted therapy (AAT) program was implemented in a Canadian forensic psychiatric facility/prison, a "hybrid" facility that adheres to federal legislation regarding correctional services but follows provincial mental health legislation. The program centers on the development of

"She's loved me at all sizes": the role of the human-animal bond in eating disorder experiences and treatment.

BACKGROUND: The mental well-being benefits and challenges of pet ownership have been explored in many populations, including clinical populations such as individuals with depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Critically, there are currently no published studies focusing specifically on pet ownership for individuals with eating disorders. The present work aimed to explore pet ownership experiences of adults experiencing eating disorders. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 cat- and dog-owning British adults (eight cat owners, six dog owners, three parti

From bond to guardianship: a serial mediation model explaining how the human-pet bond protects against pet relinquishment.

INTRODUCTION: Pet relinquishment is a major global animal welfare issue, yet the psychological mechanisms that protect against it remain insufficiently understood. Drawing on social bond theory and the cognitive-affective system framework, this study examined whether the human-pet bond influences attitudes toward pet relinquishment through a sequential cognitive-emotional pathway involving pet suffering perception and pet empathy. METHODS: We first developed and validated a two-dimensional Pet Relinquishment Attitude Scale (PRAS), comprising relinquishment rationalization and responsibility c

Dopamine in the medial amygdala network mediates human bonding.

Research in humans and nonhuman animals indicates that social affiliation, and particularly maternal bonding, depends on reward circuitry. Although numerous mechanistic studies in rodents demonstrated that maternal bonding depends on striatal dopamine transmission, the neurochemistry supporting maternal behavior in humans has not been described so far. In this study, we tested the role of central dopamine in human bonding. We applied a combined functional MRI-PET scanner to simultaneously probe mothers' dopamine responses to their infants and the connectivity between the nucleus accumbens (NAc

Social attachment shapes interbrain synchrony.

Neural synchrony, or correlated neural activity across interacting individuals, scales with relationship quality in humans, yet how it evolves during social bond formation remains unknown. Using fiber photometry in monogamous prairie voles, we track prefrontal cortex synchrony across pair bond formation. Bonded voles show stronger synchrony with partners than strangers, mirroring human findings. A linear mixed model reveals that synchrony is jointly shaped by bond strength, inter-animal distance, and time since interaction onset, with relationship type modulating how each factor contributes. Analysis of the emotional bond perception between elderly guardians and health professionals with companion animals in the one health perspective.

BACKGROUND: The One Health approach integrates human, animal, and environmental health; however, its relationship to the emotional bond between elderly pet guardians and veterinary professionals remains underexplored. Understanding this dynamic is essential for promoting animal welfare and owners' well-being. AIM: To evaluate the emotional bond between elderly pet guardians and animal health professionals within the One Health framework. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted from August 2023 to February 2024 at the Veterinary Hospital HVU of UFRPE. Participants included 66 older

Human-animal relationships in older persons: from pet companionship to animal-assisted interventions. A position statement.

The rising awareness of how animal companionship enhances human well-being has drawn significant attention from people of all ages. Literature data about the impact of human-animal relationships is still limited by the number of studies and the settings explored, especially among older adults. However, encouraging results were provided by some preliminary studies investigating pet ownership and AAI in old age. In this manuscript we provide a detailed overview of the effects of the human-animal relationship in older people. We review data on the benefits of pet ownership in later life and on An

Multispecies family: towards a broader clinical perspective in hospital settings.

In recent decades, family configurations have undergone significant transformations, with growing recognition of companion animals as meaningful members of the affective environment. This phenomenon has given rise to new forms of organization known as multispecies families. The objective of this article is to analyze, through a conceptual narrative review with an applied proposal, the clinical relevance of the human-animal bond in hospital settings and its potential incorporation into biopsychosocial assessment. Literature published between 2010 and 2025 was reviewed, prioritizing clinical, ps

Evaluation of ballistics euthanasia applied to stranded cetaceans using ethological and post-mortem computed tomography assessment.

Debilitated stranded cetaceans with low survival likelihood, may require euthanasia to avoid further suffering. Euthanasia can involve chemical or physical methods, including ballistics. Ballistics should cause instantaneous, permanent insensibility through brainstem disruption. Despite wide application, there is limited understanding of ballistics-related welfare outcomes. We opportunistically examined behaviour of three maternally-dependent cetaceans following shooting and the related cranial disruption post-mortem using computed tomography (PMCT). Our aim was to understand whether a 'humane

"Dying alone and being eaten": dog scavenging on the remains of an elderly animal hoarder-a case report.

Animal hoarding and human consumption by dogs have been important but often understudied aspects of the human-animal bond that can be addressed within a One Health framework. No scientific report has focused on dog scavenging on animal hoarders to date, despite isolated reports of dog scavenging on human remains, mostly due to starvation. The phenomenon has been approached as a confounding factor for human forensics. In 2014, the Animal Protection Department of Curitiba City was called to rescue and handle ten small dogs which had scavenged for a week on the human remains of their elderly owne

The barriers to establishing animal disaster response policies in communities and the effects of not having response networks in place.

As climate change exacerbates disasters around the world every year, millions more animals are negatively affected. There is increasing awareness of the importance of the human-animal bond to people's emotional well-being, along with studies on the traumatic effects on those who lose their animals, both companion animals and livestock, because of disasters. Despite this, however, changes in disaster management to include animal disaster response plans are not being reflected in many communities, and barriers to establishing these protocols remain. This paper addresses the ongoing trauma that c

An Objective Exploration of Euthanasia and Adverse Events.

Companion animal euthanasia is of great emotional, social, ethical, and medical significance because of the strong bond between pets and their owners. Few studies exist quantifying adverse events during and after euthanasia. Such events have profound effects on pet owners, veterinary professionals and veterinary patients. Best practices or standards of care have yet to be established. Companion animal euthanasia warrants further rigorous investigation regarding current veterinary medical practices due to its significant, complex, and far-reaching effects. Literature evaluating human euthanasia

The brain oxytocin and corticotropin-releasing factor systems in grieving mothers: What we know and what we need to learn.

The bond between a mother and her child is the strongest bond in nature. Consequently, the loss of a child is one of the most stressful and traumatic life events that causes Prolonged Grief Disorder in up to 94 % of bereaved parents. While both parents are affected, mothers are of higher risk to develop mental health complications; yet, very little research has been done to understand the impact of the loss of a child, stillbirth and pregnancy loss on key neurobiological systems. The emotional impact of losing a child, e.g., Prolonged Grief Disorder, is likely accompanied by dysregulations in

Similarities and differences between dog-human and human-human relationships.

Most dog owners in Western countries regard their dogs as companions or family members, prompting extensive research on the human-animal bond. However, many studies rely on broad categories or single dimensions, such as satisfaction or attachment, which can oversimplify the complexity of these relationships. In contrast, our study employed a multifaceted approach, examining the dog-owner bond across 13 relationship scales and comparing these scales to four different types of human relationships to reveal the human-like roles of dogs within a family. Participants (N = 717) characterized their r

Neonatal handling affects durably bonding and social development.

The neonatal period in humans and in most mammals is characterized by intense mother-young interactions favoring pair bonding and the adaptation of neonates to their new environment. However, in many post-delivery procedures, human babies commonly experience combined maternal separation and intense handling for about one hour post-birth. Currently, the effects of such disturbances on later attachment and on the development of newborns are still debated: clearly, further investigations are required. As animals present good models for controlled experimentation, we chose domestic horses to inves

Observations of basic diagnostic profile patterns seen in some common disorders of backyard poultry species.

Poultry species--chickens, ducks, geese--are becoming increasingly popular as pets. As such, requests for accurate diagnoses and treatment are being received by the veterinary community from the public. Unlike the food animal and production-oriented aspects of poultry medicine, success with these pet birds is contingent on preserving the human-pet bird bond, as defined by the individual client. This article presents some of this author's observations in diagnostic profiles on some selected disorders of backyard poultry.

'Doing good by proxy': human-animal kinship and the 'donation' of canine blood.

This article demonstrates the relevance of animals to medical sociology by arguing that pet owners' accounts of veterinary decision-making can highlight key sociological themes which are important to both human and animal health. Based on semi-structured interviews, the article argues that interspecies 'kinship' allows for the extension of sociological claims regarding altruism, self-interest and mutuality from human blood donation to companion animal blood 'donation'. Furthermore, this study extends sociological understanding of the human-animal bond by showing how the dog's status as kin mea
