Filariasis: nutritional interactions in human and animal hosts.

Vector-borne nematodes of the Order Filarioidea produce chronic, debilitating human infections which are usually nonfatal but are associated with a high degree of severe morbidity. Weight loss often accompanies infection and is probably a consequence of the increased energy cost associated with filarial fever, lymphangitis and lymphadenitis. In onchocerciasis, weight loss is associated with heavy worm loads as assessed by abundant nodules and large numbers of skin microfilariae. Experimental infections using rodent filariae have confirmed these observations and have also shown that low protein

MOZ and MORF acetyltransferases: Molecular interaction, animal development and human disease.

Lysine residues are subject to many forms of covalent modification and one such modification is acetylation of the ε-amino group. Initially identified on histone proteins in the 1960s, lysine acetylation is now considered as an important form of post-translational modification that rivals phosphorylation. However, only about a dozen of human lysine acetyltransferases have been identified. Among them are MOZ (monocytic leukemia zinc finger protein; a.k.a. MYST3 and KAT6A) and its paralog MORF (a.k.a. MYST4 and KAT6B). Although there is a distantly related protein in Drosophila and sea urchin, t

Human, animal, water source interactions and leptospirosis in Thailand.

In Thailand, leptospirosis is primarily associated with those who work in agricultural occupations. Leptospirosis control is hampered by a poor understanding of the complex interactions between humans, animal reservoirs, Leptospira, and the variable spatial environment in which these factors coexist. We aimed to address key knowledge gaps concerning leptospirosis disease dynamics and the human-animal-water-source interface in two high-risk areas in Thailand. We conducted a cross-sectional survey among 746 study participants in two high-risk areas for leptospirosis in Thailand: Sisaket (SSK) an

[Interaction of iron, zinc and copper in the body of animals and humans].

In the light of the pertinent literature the sites and mechanisms of interactions of iron, zinc and copper in the human and animal organism are discussed. Both low and high intake of any of them may influence the utilization and metabolism of both remaining ones. E.G. dietary copper deficiency impairs the mobilization of iron reserves from the liver, and its excess inhibits the intestinal absorption of iron and zinc. Iron in excess may antagonize copper and zinc in the intestinal mucosa. Zinc excess has an unfavourable influence on iron balance by reducing the bioavailability of copper, and zi

The microbiome and non-occupational human-animal interactions: a scoping review.

Human-animal interactions may impact the composition of the human microbiome. This can then influence human physical, mental, and social wellbeing. This scoping review synthesizes the literature on the impacts of intentional, non-occupational human-animal interactions on the human microbiome. Six databases (PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science, CAB Abstracts, and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses) were searched using keywords for human-animal interactions and microbiomes. Database searching resulted in 2,946 publications. Publications were screened according to the following inclusion crit

Exploring wanting and liking during positive human-animal interactions.

RATIONALE: Dopamine and opioids modulate the "wanting" and "liking" components of reward processes, yet their specific roles in social and human-animal interactions (HAIs) remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: In this pilot study, we aimed to disentangle the roles of dopamine and opioids during HAIs, contrasting them with food reward and novel object test scenarios. We investigated these neurotransmitter systems as proximate mechanisms for "wanting" and "liking" behaviours in domesticated pigs. Additionally, there is a significant knowledge gap on the optimal dosage for the dopamine D2/D3 receptor anta

A Qualitative Analysis of Human-Animal Interactions with Respect to Zoonoses in Nepal.

Infectious diseases of zoonotic origin are a serious threat to human health and livelihoods globally. Habitat encroachment and deforestation bring humans and animals into contact, increase potential for disease spread, and foster human-animal conflict. Our aim, using thematic analysis, was to qualitatively examine the zoonotic disease landscape in Nepal from public, policymaker, and healthcare practitioner perspectives, and to describe key human-animal interactions. Community participants at six sites were interviewed or took part in focus groups (n = 73); 20 healthcare practitioner and policy

Known Cellular and Receptor Interactions of Animal and Human Coronaviruses: A Review.

This article aims to review all currently known interactions between animal and human coronaviruses and their cellular receptors. Over the past 20 years, three novel coronaviruses have emerged that have caused severe disease in humans, including SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome virus 2); therefore, a deeper understanding of coronavirus host-cell interactions is essential. Receptor-binding is the first stage in coronavirus entry prior to replication and can be altered by minor changes within the spike protein-the coronavirus surface glycoprotein responsible for the recognition of c

Best practices for planning events encouraging human-animal interactions.

Educational events encouraging human-animal interaction include the risk of zoonotic disease transmission. It is estimated that 14% of all disease in the USA caused by Campylobacter spp., Cryptosporidium spp., Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O157, non-O157 STECs, Listeria monocytogenes, non-typhoidal Salmonella enterica and Yersinia enterocolitica were attributable to animal contact. This article reviews best practices for organizing events where human-animal interactions are encouraged, with the objective of lowering the risk of zoonotic disease transmission.

Human-animal interactions: starting with pets of children with cerebral palsy.

BACKGROUND: Human-Animal Interaction and Animal-Assisted Interventions (AAI) are those which include an animal for therapy. AAI is used to promote developmental outcomes in children with CP. Here, as a start to understanding the accessibility to pets and aspects of human animal-interactions for children with CP we: (1) describe the number and type of pets; and (2) examine the relationship between the presence of pets, environmental factors, and parent-reported measures. METHODS: 100 children with CP (range 2–8 years) were part of a randomized controlled trial. Data from baseline assessments, b

Interactive lung segmentation in abnormal human and animal chest CT scans.

PURPOSE: Many medical image analysis systems require segmentation of the structures of interest as a first step. For scans with gross pathology, automatic segmentation methods may fail. The authors' aim is to develop a versatile, fast, and reliable interactive system to segment anatomical structures. In this study, this system was used for segmenting lungs in challenging thoracic computed tomography (CT) scans. METHODS: In volumetric thoracic CT scans, the chest is segmented and divided into 3D volumes of interest (VOIs), containing voxels with similar densities. These VOIs are automatically

Human-animal interaction, stress, and embryo production in Bos indicus embryo donors under tropical conditions.

This study investigated the effect of human-animal interaction (HAI) and the stress response on the quality of embryo production in superovulated Nelore (Bos indicus) cattle, under tropical conditions. Thirty-two females underwent a superovulation protocol for 5 days. Cortisol concentrations were determined in blood plasma collected on days 0, 4, and 5. Artificial insemination was performed on days 4 and 5, and nonsurgical embryo flushing on day 11. Embryo production and viability were determined. Human stimulation, animal behaviors, accidents, and handling time were recorded to assess HAI. Ca

Guinea Pig (Cavia porcellus) Welfare: Associations Between Husbandry Practices, Human-Animal Interactions, and Animal Behaviour.

Research on the welfare of pet guinea pigs and connections between their behaviour and husbandry practices is scarce. Through an online survey among 1181 German-speaking guinea pig caretakers, we investigated husbandry practices (including social composition, housing type, free roaming, enrichment, and feeding), human-animal interactions, and guinea pig behaviour. Most participating caretakers seemed attentive to their animals' needs and welfare, as shown by the prevalence of self-built enclosures (42.8%) and fenced floor areas (21.1%), with various enrichment and furnishings, and mostly balan

Characterizing stress during animal interaction: a focus on the human endocrine response during equine-assisted services.

Repeated stresses applied to the rider may contribute to the documented physical and psychosocial outcomes from equine-assisted services. In this brief review, a summary of neuroendocrine markers of stress, including immunoglobulin A, serotonin, cortisol, progesterone, and oxytocin, is presented within the context of the physiology of stress modulation. Results are mixed with regard to the effects of these hormones on rider physiology before, during, and after equine-assisted services. However, some results from existing studies are promising with regard to the attenuation of stress. Future re

Exploring the Role of Cognitive Reserve and Human-Animal Interaction in Late-Life Depression: A Moderation Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Depression impairs the quality of life in older adults and represents a significant public health issue. Cognitive reserve may act as a protective factor against depressive symptoms in older adults. Additionally, interaction with pets may serve as another potential protective factor against these symptoms. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate whether higher cognitive reserve could predict a reduction in depressive symptoms in older adults and to investigate the moderating role of pet companionship in this relationship. Methods: The following instruments were used: a Sociod

Strengths and limitations of in vitro and animal models to advance understanding of human diet‒microbiome interactions.

The gut microbiome is a critical mediator of human health. As the intestinal microbiota is far more metabolically diverse than humans, it plays a significant role in the digestion of food, particularly food components that are nutritionally inaccessible to the human host. While no system can fully recapitulate the in vivo interactions of food, the host, and the gut microbiome in the human body, in vitro and animal model tools are critical for studying these complex relationships. Here, we review many of the common in vitro and animal models used to manipulate and study how the gut microbiome a

Changes in social and human-animal interactions in people with epilepsy during dog-assisted interventions.

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder with physical, psychological, and social consequences that can be alleviated by the integration of a service dog in their daily life. Reports showed that various populations benefit from animal-assisted interventions, particularly dog-assisted interventions (DAI). However, to our knowledge, no study has yet examined the effects of DAI on individuals with epilepsy. This study aimed to characterize the interactions of individuals with epilepsy during DAI sessions. Ten adults with epilepsy (five women and five men; mean age: 24.4 ± 3.0 years) participated in th

Ecology of Burkholderia pseudomallei and the interactions between environmental Burkholderia spp. and human-animal hosts.

Early workers thought that melioidosis was a zoonosis with a reservoir in rodents, but we now know that Burkholderia pseudomallei is a widely distributed environmental saprophyte. In northeast Thailand, two thirds of paddy fields yield the organism, and 80% of children have antibodies by the time they are 4 years old. However, interpretation of these results has been complicated by the recent recognition of avirulent, antigenically cross-reacting environmental organisms for which the name B. thailandensis has been proposed. We still know very little about the climatic, physical, chemical and b
