Interfaces, Circuits and Humidifiers.

Long-term non-invasive ventilation (LTNIV) has been increasingly used in children to manage chronic respiratory failure and airway obstruction. Interfaces are of paramount importance for non-invasive ventilation (NIV) effectiveness and patient compliance. However, historically, the choice of pediatric mask has been limited by the scarce availability of commercial interfaces. In recent years, an increasing number of different masks have been commercialized for children, allowing to increase the number of patients who could benefit from LTNIV. Factors such as the age of the child, disease, crani

Humidifier lung and humidifier fever.

The aim of our study was to evaluate clinical diagnoses in symptomatic persons exposed to aerosols from humidifiers or air conditioners. In addition, we tried to identify the causative antigens. Results of clinical investigations, including inhalation challenge tests, demonstrated a typical hypersensitivity pneumonitis (humidifier lung) in 9 persons and isolated systemic symptoms without significant changes in lung function and chest x-rays (humidifier fever) in 3 persons. Microbiological studies revealed a variety of fungi and bacteria in the water supplies of humidifiers and air conditioners

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis associated with home ultrasonic humidifiers.

We describe five patients with hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) that was related to using home ultrasonic humidifiers. All patients had micronodular infiltrates on their chest radiograph, and their lung biopsy specimens revealed alveolitis with or without epithelioid cell granulomas. Challenge tests were performed on two patients with the humidifier water and three patients using the humidifier. All patients tested exhibited a positive response. Tests for precipitating antibodies against an extract of the humidifier water gave strongly positive reactions in all patients tested. Precipitins to

[Humidifier fever].

Pollution of air ventilation and conditioning systems by microorganisms and products of their activity can lead to the development of infectious (legionnaires' disease) and allergic (humidifier fever) diseases. Clinical, immunological and hygienic investigations under natural conditions of 72 persons working in offices helped to study a respiratory disease which was similar to humidifier fever. The removal of dust and mud from the system and thorough cleaning of all conditioned rooms put an end to this disease.

[Humidifier lung].

Breathing air from a humidifier or an air conditioning unit contaminated by various microorganisms can cause an acute lung disease involving fever, cough and dyspnea, termed "humidifier fever". This type of hypersensitivity pneumonitis was first described in 1959 by PESTALOZZI in the Swiss literature and subsequently by BANASZAK et al. in the Anglo-American. Here a chronic form of this disease which led to pulmonary fibrosis is described: A 37-year-old woman who works in a cheese shop presented with dyspnea which had been progressive over two years, weight loss, a diffuse reticular pattern rad

A new humidifier.

A new heated water-bath humidifier operates on a new basic principle which overcomes the practical disadvantages of existing systems. A heated hose is used to control a temperature drop along the whole length of the delivery line instead of raising the temperature of the gases in the delivery line as in previous systems. Therefore the tank does not have to fully saturate the gases and a simple, totally cleanable design is possible. A temperature sensor at the delivery point controls the hose heater, constituting a rapid response, low thermal inertia system and delivery temperature is displayed

Hygroscopic condenser humidifiers in chronically tracheostomized patients who breathe spontaneously.

The aim of this study was to test the usefulness of hygroscopic condenser humidifiers on secretion and on inspired gas temperature in tracheostomized patients. Forty spontaneously breathing chronically tracheostomized patients were divided into two groups: Group 1 received a hygroscopic condenser humidifier connected to the tracheostomy, 24 h daily for 10 days; Group 2, without any protection system, was chosen as the control group. The daily number of tracheal suctions, quantity of aspirate and thickness and colouring of secretions was evaluated. At baseline, and at days 5 and 10, patients we

Causative antigens of humidifier lung in vapor from a humidifier: A case report.

A 68-year-old man exhibited fever and cough three weeks prior to hospital admission after three months of ultrasonic humidifier usage. Chest computed tomography showed bilateral ground-glass opacities, lymphocyte levels in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid were elevated (60.8%), and the histological examination of a transbronchial lung biopsy showed lymphocytic alveolitis. He gradually improved without medication after he stopped using the humidifier. Accordingly, humidifier lung was the diagnosis. Humidifier water and vapor collected from the patient's humidifier were investigated. Humidifier

Humidifiers for oxygen therapy: what risk for reusable and disposable devices?

INTRODUCTION: Nosocomial pneumonia accounts for the vast majority of healthcare-associated infections (HAI). Although numerous medical devices have been discussed as potential vehicles for microorganisms, very little is known about the role played by oxygen humidifiers as potential sources of nosocomial pathogens. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the safety of the reuse of humidifiers by analysing the rate of microbial contamination in reusable and disposable oxygen humidifiers used during therapy, and then discuss their potential role in the transmission of respiratory pathogens.

Humidifier disinfectant-associated specific diseases should be called together as "humidifier disinfectant syndrome".

Humidifier disinfectant (HD) damage was terrible chemical damage caused by household goods that happened in only South Korea, but still very little is known in HD damage. Up to now, previous research tried to focus on interstitial fibrosis on terminal bronchioles and alveoli because it is a specific finding, compared with other diseases. To figure out whole effects from HDs, much epidemiologic and toxicologic research is underway. HDs were shown to give rise to typical toxicologic effects on various target organs, such as skin, conjunctiva, naval mucosa, bronchial mucosa, alveoli and so on, wh

Two Sporadic Cases of Legionellosis Associated with the Use of Domestic Ultrasonic Humidifiers.

Two sporadic cases of legionellosis occurring in consecutive years were confirmed by positive antigenuria to Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 in individuals with limited mobility who were confined to their homes. Both cases had a history of using ultrasonic humidifiers and of low exposure to other possible sources of infection. This study was conducted through an expanded epidemiological survey and home inspection. Samples were collected from domestic hot water and humidifiers. Environmental isolates were characterised by immunoagglutination and immunofluorescence. The Dresden panel is emplo

Effect of aerosol particles generated by ultrasonic humidifiers on the lung in mouse.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasonic humidifiers silently generate water droplets as a cool fog and produce most of the dissolved minerals in the fog in the form of an aerosolized "white dust." However, the health effect of these airborne particles is largely unknown. This study aimed to characterize the aerosol particles generated by ultrasonic humidifiers and to investigate their effect on the lung tissue of mice. METHODS: An ultrasonic humidifier was operated with tap water, high-silica water, ultrapure water, or other water types. In a chamber (0.765 m3, ventilation ratio 11.5 m3/hr), male ICR mice (10

Nosocomial legionellosis associated with use of oxygen bubble humidifiers and underwater chest drains.

In 1 year 12 of 48 patients who developed fatal pneumonia following admission with non-respiratory disorders to the Hospital Molinette, Torino, yielded Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 from lung at autopsy. Patients were hospitalized on seven different wards for different conditions; only two of the wards had air conditioning but legionellas were not isolated from these. All patients were in poor health or immunocompromised. Some patients had inhaled humidified oxygen from piped supplies and three had undergone surgery. Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 was detected in the water of oxygen b

Programmed humidifying in drug stability experiments.

The stability of penicillin potassium, as a solid state model, was investigated by a programmed humidity and temperature controlled method. An optimization calculational approach to data handling is suggested. The stability of drugs which are unstable to both heat and moisture could be studied by a single pair of experiments, one with programmed humidity control and one non-isothermal, rather than many standard isothermal studies, each at constant relative humidity. The controlling system, based on a pocket computer, was found to be accurate and reliable. The results indicated that the kinetic

The evaluation of a humidifying device for vitreoretinal surgery.

AIM: To study the feasibility of humidifying air during vitreoretinal surgery and measure the water content of air before and after intraocular transit. METHODS: The absolute water content of air was measured in a series of six eyes undergoing fluid-air exchange during macular hole surgery. Infrared absorption spectroscopy was used to determine the water content of the air infusing and exiting each eye. After baseline measurements for each eye were recorded, a second fluid-air exchange was performed and the effect of humidifying the air infusion was documented. The humidifying device used in

Heated, humidified air for the common cold.

BACKGROUND: Heated, humidified air is used by common cold sufferers since the invention of the steam kettle. There is scientific literature available investigating this mode of therapy using a rhinotherm. The present reviews addresses to the use of hot, humid air in common cold. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of inhaling heated water vapour with the help of a rhinotherm (an equipment designed to deliver heated water vapour to a person's nasal cavity), in the treatment of the common cold by comparing a. symptoms b. viral shedding c. nasal resistance after a natural or experimentally induced

Serological and clinical investigation of humidifier fever.

A group of nineteen normally healthy subjects in a microprocessor factory reported various degrees of work-related respiratory and systemic symptoms that in some were suggestive of humidifier fever (HF). They all had normal serology against a variety of infectious agents, but serum-precipitating antibody against antigens in the factory humidifier water was present in twelve subjects, primarily those with symptoms most in keeping with HF. There was extensive serological identity between the antigens from this and other confirmed sources of HF. The antibody-positive subjects were all non-smokers

Humidified air inhalation for treating croup.

BACKGROUND: Croup (laryngotracheobronchitis) is a common cause of upper airway obstruction in children with a peak incidence of 60 per 1000 child years in those aged between one and two years. It is characterised by hoarseness, a barking cough, and inspiratory stridor. These symptoms are thought to occur as a result of oedema of the larynx and trachea, which have been triggered by a recent viral infection. Para influenza virus type 1 is the agent most commonly identified in cases of croup. Severe cases are admitted to hospital and steroid treatment is established to reduce disease severity. Tr
