Cognitive control of song production by humpback whales.

Singing humpback whales are highly versatile vocalizers, producing complex sequences of sounds that they vary throughout adulthood. Past analyses of humpback whale song have emphasized yearly variations in structural features of songs made collectively by singers within a population with comparatively little attention given to the ways that individual singers vary consecutive songs. As a result, many researchers describe singing by humpback whales as a process in which singers produce sequences of repeating sound patterns. Here, we show that such characterizations misrepresent the degree to wh

Migratory convergence facilitates cultural transmission of humpback whale song.

Cultural transmission of behaviour is important in a wide variety of vertebrate taxa from birds to humans. Vocal traditions and vocal learning provide a strong foundation for studying culture and its transmission in both humans and cetaceans. Male humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) perform complex, culturally transmitted song displays that can change both evolutionarily (through accumulations of small changes) or revolutionarily (where a population rapidly adopts a novel song). The degree of coordination and conformity underlying song revolutions makes their study of particular interest.

Bronchopneumonia by Granulicatella balaenopterae in a humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae).

We report a microbiological and pathological investigation of a juvenile male humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) stranded in Mostardas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Macroscopically, the lung parenchyma exhibited a diffuse hyperemia, that on histological examination was composed of suppurative bronchopneumonia associated with necrosis of the bronchial epithelium. Microbiological analyses of the lung tissue demonstrated pure and significant growth of Granulicatella balaenopterae. Lastly, on the microscopic exam, the whale presented a pattern of meningoencephalitis and bacterial enterocolitis

Morphology of the eyeball from the Humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae).

Aquatic mammals underwent morphological and physiological adaptations due to the transition from terrestrial to aquatic environment. One of the morphological changes regards their vision since cetaceans' eyes are able to withstand mechanical, chemical, osmotic, and optical water conditions. Due to insufficient information about these animals, especially regarding their sense organs, this study aimed to describe the morphology of the Humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) eyeball. Three newborn females, stranded dead on the coast of Sergipe and Bahia, Brazil, were used. Samples were fixed in a

Caller identification and characterization of individual humpback whale acoustic behaviour.

Acoustic recording tags provide fine-scale data linking acoustic signalling with individual behaviour; however, when an animal is in a group, it is challenging to tease apart calls of conspecifics and identify which individuals produce each call. This, in turn, prohibits a robust assessment of individual acoustic behaviour including call rates and silent periods, call bout production within and between individuals, and caller location. To overcome this challenge, we simultaneously instrumented small groups of humpback whales on a western North Atlantic feeding ground with sound and movement re

Temperature and Ultraviolet Radiation Influence the Skin Microbiome of Humpback Whales.

The skin microbiome of humpback whales harbours diverse microbial communities that play a crucial role in host skin protection and environmental interaction. However, studies on cetacean skin microbiomes in the Southern Hemisphere focus on feeding grounds, with limited information on microbiome dynamics at breeding grounds and during migration across contrasting habitats. We characterised the skin microbiome of 46 humpback whales from two seasonal habitats: the Magellan Strait feeding ground and the Ecuadorian coast breeding ground, comparing age, sex, environmental conditions, and seawater. Surface Behaviours of Humpback Whale Megaptera novaeangliae at Nosy Be (Madagascar).

The surface behaviours of humpback whales were studied in the presence of a whale-watching vessel at Nosy Be (Madagascar) during whale-watching activities, in order to characterise the ethogram of these animals. Data were collected from July to October 2018. Of the 75 total trips, humpback whales were observed 68 times and different types of aggregations were observed: Groups (33.82%), Mother-calf pairs (30.88%), Singles (27.94%), and Mother-calf and Escorts (7.35%). Individuals exhibited the following behaviours: Spouting, Breaching, Head Slap, Tail Throw, Tail Slap, Peck Slap, Spy-hopping, a

Common humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) sound types for passive acoustic monitoring.

Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) are one of several baleen whale species in the Northwest Atlantic that coexist with vessel traffic and anthropogenic noise. Passive acoustic monitoring strategies can be used in conservation management, but the first step toward understanding the acoustic behavior of a species is a good description of its acoustic repertoire. Digital acoustic tags (DTAGs) were placed on humpback whales in the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary to record and describe the non-song sounds being produced in conjunction with foraging activities. Peak frequencies of so

Non-song social call bouts of migrating humpback whales.

The use of stereotyped calls within structured bouts has been described for a number of species and may increase the information potential of call repertoires. Humpback whales produce a repertoire of social calls, although little is known about the complexity or function of these calls. In this study, digital acoustic tag recordings were used to investigate social call use within bouts, the use of bouts across different social contexts, and whether particular call type combinations were favored. Call order within bouts was investigated using call transition frequencies and information theory t

Evidence for acoustic communication among bottom foraging humpback whales.

Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), a mysticete with a cosmopolitan distribution, demonstrate marked behavioural plasticity. Recent studies show evidence of social learning in the transmission of specific population level traits ranging from complex singing to stereotyped prey capturing behaviour. Humpback whales have been observed to employ group foraging techniques, however details on how individuals coordinate behaviour in these groups is challenging to obtain. This study investigates the role of a novel broadband patterned pulsed sound produced by humpback whales engaged in bottom-fe

Flying whales: Insights into the flipper of the humpback whale and its relatives using a novel tissue-illuminating technique.

Cetaceans primarily generate thrust through dorsoventral oscillations of the caudal flukes, while their flippers are generally associated with lift generation and torque production during manoeuvring. However, the humpback whale, which possesses the largest forelimbs among extant and extinct vertebrates, has been observed performing active flipper strokes that contribute to forward propulsion. This behaviour represents a unique combination of axial swimming and underwater flight among cetaceans. In this study we investigate the anatomical correlates of this rarely observed locomotor behaviour

Humpback whales increase singing rate in response to seismic air guns.

Seismic air guns, widely used in offshore resource exploration, are a major source of anthropogenic noise in marine environments. For some cetaceans, these impulsive sounds can disrupt acoustic communication critical for breeding and social interactions. Male humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) produce long, highly structured songs as part of their reproductive display, often within areas overlapping seismic activity. This study investigated whether air gun noise alters the organisation and rate of humpback whale song. Four temporal parameters; inter-call interval, phrase duration, theme

A predicted humpback whale hearing curve based on modified behavioral observation audiometry data.

Despite decades of research, little capability exists to reliably predict the impact of ocean noise on marine mammals.1 Noise impact predictions require knowing the frequencies marine mammals can hear and their sensitivity to those sounds (e.g., the hearing threshold, or the susceptibility to noise-induced hearing loss). For odontocetes and pinnipeds, these are well documented using behavioral methods, where the animal is trained to respond to an audible signal,2 or auditory evoked potential (AEP) methods, where the neural response of the brain is measured.2 Both the hearing range and sensitiv

Osteological pathology in a Humpback (Megaptera novaeangliae) and Fin (Balaenoptera physalus) whale skeleton.

The Natural History Collections, Bergen Museum, The University of Bergen, Norway, houses a large collection of Baleen whale skeletons within which one mature Fin (Balaenoptera physalus) and one juvenile Humpback (Megaptera novaeangliae) whale skeleton exhibit notable osteological pathologies that are reported in this brief communication. The Humpback skeleton has a large lesion on the maxilla characterised by loss of bone and remodelling. The lesion would appear to be a healing injury caused by trauma to the area of the gums and adjacent soft tissue. This specimen also exhibits numerous locali

Mercury levels in humpback whales, and other Southern Ocean marine megafauna.

Mercury is a known potent neurotoxin. The biogeochemical cycle of mercury in the remote Antarctic region is still poorly understood, with Polar climate change contributing added complexity. Longitudinal biomonitoring of mercury accumulation in Antarctic marine megafauna can contribute top-down insight into the bio-physical drivers of wildlife exposure. The bioaccumulative nature of organic mercury renders high trophic predators at the greatest risk of elevated exposure. Humpback whales represent secondary consumers of the Antarctic sea-ice ecosystem and an ideal biomonitoring species for persi

Variation in the tyrosinase gene associated with a white humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae).

Tyrosinase-negative oculocutaneous albinism (OCA1A) is characterized by lifelong white hair and skin, a phenotype that has been described in most mammalian species worldwide. Tyrosinase is the key enzyme in melanin biosynthesis, and mutations in the tyrosinase gene result in OCA1A. We examined sequence variation at exon 1 of the tyrosinase gene in 66 humpback whale samples collected from the east coast of Australia, including an anomalously white humpback whale known as "Migaloo." We identified 3 novel variants, including a cytosine deletion that results in a premature stop codon in exon 1. Th

Humpback whale song on the Southern Ocean feeding grounds: implications for cultural transmission.

Male humpback whales produce a long, complex, and stereotyped song on low-latitude breeding grounds; they also sing while migrating to and from these locations, and occasionally in high-latitude summer feeding areas. All males in a population sing the current version of the constantly evolving display and, within an ocean basin, populations sing similar songs; however, this sharing can be complex. In the western and central South Pacific region there is repeated cultural transmission of song types from eastern Australia to other populations eastward. Song sharing is hypothesized to occur throu

Dynamic horizontal cultural transmission of humpback whale song at the ocean basin scale.

Cultural transmission, the social learning of information or behaviors from conspecifics, is believed to occur in a number of groups of animals, including primates, cetaceans, and birds. Cultural traits can be passed vertically (from parents to offspring), obliquely (from the previous generation via a nonparent model to younger individuals), or horizontally (between unrelated individuals from similar age classes or within generations). Male humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) have a highly stereotyped, repetitive, and progressively evolving vocal sexual display or "song" that functions in
