Cranial Findings of Pachycrocuta brevirostris (Hyaenidae, Carnivora) from the Taurida Cave (Crimea, Early Pleistocene).

Cranial materials of the large hyena Pachycrocuta brevirostris (Gervais, 1850) from the Early Pleistocene (~1.8-1.6 Ma) locality in the Taurida cave (Crimea) belong to individuals of different individual ages, from juvenile to senile. The relative facial length of the "short-faced hyena" P. brevirostris has been shown to be greater than that of the recent spotted hyena Crocuta сrocuta (Erxleben, 1777). As P. brevirostris matured, the facial and frontal regions increased significantly in height, and the dorsal profile line of the skull elevated noticeably. New material on P. brevirostris is of

HELMINTH EGGS FROM PACHYCROCUTA BREVIROSTRIS (CARNIVORA, HYAENIDAE) COPROLITES FROM TAURIDA CAVE (EARLY PLEISTOCENE, CRIMEA).

Twenty-seven Pachycrocuta brevirostris coprolites from Taurida Cave (Early Pleistocene) were studied. Eggs of parasitic worms were found in 6 of them (22.2%). Eggs of Trematoda species were identified among them, as were eggs of Taenia, Toxocara, and Capillaria. Toxocara eggs were the most common; they were found in 15% of the coprolites. This is the earliest evidence of P. brevirostris infection by these groups of helminths.

Spotted hyaenas and the sexual spectrum: reproductive endocrinology and development.

The spotted hyaena (Crocuta crocuta) is a unique species, even amongst the Hyaenidae. Extreme clitoral development in female spotted hyaenas challenges aspects of the accepted framework of sexual differentiation and reproductive function. They lack a vulva and instead urinate, copulate and give birth through a single, long urogenital canal that traverses a clitoris superficially resembling a penis. Recent and historical evidence is reviewed to describe our changing understanding of the biology of this species. Expanding upon observations from hyaenas in nature, much has been learned from studi

General introduction and epidemiology of trichinellosis.

All studies on trichinellosis have been based on the assumption that there is only one cosmopolitan agent of human and animal trichinellosis; Trichinella spiralis (Owen, 1835). In the past, swine and only a few synanthropic animals were considered reservoirs, and the presence of the parasite in sylvatic animals was considered rare. Breeding experiments before, and then biochemical approaches (isoenzymes and DNA analysis), showed the presence of a high genetic variability inside this genus, suggesting it be considered as polyspecific. At present, eight gene pools, named from T1 to T8, have been

Multiple cranial pathologies in spotted hyaenas, Crocuta crocuta.

Spotted hyaenas are generally considered to have resilience against injuries and pathogens, and the incidence of pathologies is scarcely reported. However, it is important for ecological studies and conservation efforts to have a clear overview of the physical threats that can occur in the life of a species. The present paper describes and interprets several osteopathologies in the crania of the spotted hyaena, Crocuta crocuta, in the collections of the Royal Museum for Central Africa (RMCA) in Tervuren, Belgium. Of the fifty-two specimens from central Africa examined, twenty-three (i.e., 44 %

Tuberculosis Detection in Chest Radiographs Using Spotted Hyena Algorithm Optimized Deep and Handcrafted Features.

Lung abnormality in humans is steadily increasing due to various causes, and early recognition and treatment are extensively suggested. Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the lung diseases, and due to its occurrence rate and harshness, the World Health Organization (WHO) lists TB among the top ten diseases which lead to death. The clinical level detection of TB is usually performed using bio-medical imaging methods, and a chest X-ray is a commonly adopted imaging modality. This work aims to develop an automated procedure to detect TB from X-ray images using VGG-UNet-supported joint segmentation and c

Coursing hyenas and stalking lions: The potential for inter- and intraspecific interactions.

Resource partitioning promotes coexistence among guild members, and carnivores reduce interference competition through behavioral mechanisms that promote spatio-temporal separation. We analyzed sympatric lion and spotted hyena movements and activity patterns to ascertain the mechanisms facilitating their coexistence within semi-arid and wetland ecosystems. We identified recurrent high-use (revisitation) and extended stay (duration) areas within home ranges, as well as correlated movement-derived measures of inter- and intraspecific interactions with environmental variables. Spatial overlaps am

Further studies on the diversity of Cylicospirura Vevers, 1922 (Nematoda: Spirocercidae) in African carnivores, with description of a new species.

Cylicospirura Vevers, 1922 is a genus of gastrointestinal spirurid nematodes parasitizing mainly felid but also canid, hyaenid and dasyurid hosts. Presently, 11 species are recognized worldwide, of which 4, Cylicospirura subaequalis, Cylicospirura felinea, Cylicospirura crocutae and Cylicospirura pardalis, have been recorded from African carnivores. In the present study, we describe Cylicospirura phiri n. sp. from hyaenas, namely Crocuta crocuta (type host) in Zimbabwe and Hyaena hyaena in Cameroon. The new species is the second species in the genus with bicuspid teeth. Furthermore, it can be

Insights into cranial anatomy and craniometry of the aardwolf (Proteles cristata) with comparisons to extant hyaenids.

BACKGROUND: The aardwolf skulls were analyzed and compared to the spotted hyena, the brown hyena and the striped hyena, using specimens from Polish and South African collections. Addressing gaps in detailed anatomy and morphometrics, this study used extensive analyzes, encompassing 64 morphometric parameters and 7 indices, to examine the morphology and morphometrics of cranial and mandibular structures and quantify interspecific and intraspecific variation. RESULTS: The comparative analysis of hyena skulls revealed significant differences between the aardwolf and the other three species. The

A neuroanatomical comparison of humans and spotted hyena, a natural animal model for common urogenital sinus: clinical reflections on feminizing genitoplasty.

PURPOSE: Surgical treatment of the common urogenital sinus phallus has been one of the most challenging areas in pediatric urology. To better understand the neuroanatomy of the common urogenital sinus phallus, we evaluated an animal model naturally having this condition, the spotted hyena, Crocuta crocuta. We compared the neuroanatomy of male and female humans and spotted hyenas using anatomical, immunohistochemical and 3D reconstruction techniques. We also examined the implications of the pattern of clitoral innervation for the unique challenges faced by female spotted hyenas, the only extant

Mucosal immune responses and intestinal microbiome associations in wild spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta).

Little is known about host-gut microbiome interactions within natural populations at the intestinal mucosa, the primary interface. We investigate associations between the intestinal microbiome and mucosal immune measures while controlling for host, social and ecological factors in 199 samples of 158 wild spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) in the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania. We profile the microbiome composition using a multi-amplicon approach and measure faecal immunoglobulin A and mucin. Probabilistic models indicate that both immune measures predicted microbiome similarity among individu

Quantifying intra- and inter-species contact rates at supplemental feeding sites in Ethiopia to inform rabies maintenance potential of multiple host species.

Rabies, a multi-host pathogen responsible for the loss of roughly 59,000 human lives each year worldwide, continues to impose a significant burden of disease despite control efforts, especially in Ethiopia. However, how species other than dogs contribute to rabies transmission throughout Ethiopia remains largely unknown. In this study, we quantified interactions among wildlife species in Ethiopia with the greatest potential for contributing to rabies maintenance. We observed wildlife at supplemental scavenging sites across multiple landscape types and quantified transmission potential. More sp

Two new species of Cylicospirura Vevers, 1922 (Nematoda: Spirocercidae) from carnivores in southern Africa, with validation of the related genera Gastronodus Singh, 1934 and Skrjabinocercina Matschulsky, 1952.

Two new species of Cylicospirura Vevers, 1922 are described from carnivores from southern Africa. Cylicospirura crocutae Junker et Mutafchiev sp. n. from Crocuta crocuta (Erxleben) in Zimbabwe is distinguished from its congeners by combinations of characters, including the presence of four cephalic and four external labial papillae, while internal labial papillae were not distinct, the presence of groups of small accessory teeth between the six large tricuspid teeth, the fifth and the sixth pairs of the caudal papillae being equidistant from the cloaca, and a large ratio of length of the muscu

A retrospective study of wildlife rabies in Zimbabwe, between 1992 and 2003.

To assess the epidemiological features of wildlife rabies in Zimbabwe, a retrospective study covering a period of 12 years (1992-2003) was conducted using rabies records of the Central Veterinary Laboratories (CVL), Department of Veterinary Technical Services at Harare. Records of monthly and annual wildlife rabies were perused with regard to total samples submitted to the CVL and corresponding positive cases. Positive cases were analyzed in relation to the animal species involved, seasonal trends, and land-use categories. A total of 2107 samples were submitted and 1 540 (73.1%) were positive.

Transient genital abnormalities in striped hyenas (Hyaena hyaena).

The highly masculinized genitalia of female spotted hyenas Crocuta crocuta is unique among mammals: Crocuta have no external vagina so urination, penile intromission and parturition take place through the clitoris, which mimics a fully erectile male penis. Among hyenids, virilization of external female genitalia has previously been observed only in Crocuta, so functional explanations of masculinization have focused on aspects of social ecology unique to the species. Here we first show that the striped hyena Hyaena hyaena exhibits both unusual similarity in male and female androgen concentratio

Development of the external genitalia: perspectives from the spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta).

This review/research paper summarizes data on development of the external genitalia of the spotted hyena, a fascinating mammal noted for extreme masculinization of the female external genitalia. The female spotted hyena is the only extant mammal that mates and gives birth through a pendulous penis-like clitoris. Our studies indicate that early formation of the phallus in both males and females is independent of androgens; indeed the phallus forms before the fetal testes or ovaries are capable of synthesizing androgens. Likewise, pre- and postnatal growth in length of the penis and clitoris is

Squamous cell carcinoma of the anal sac in a spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta).

A 25-yr-old spayed female spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta) developed intermittent right pelvic limb lameness that persisted following conservative medical therapy. No obvious musculoskeletal lesions were noted on initial physical exam; however, spinal radiography was suspicious for possible intervertebral degenerative joint disease or discospondylitis. Despite prolonged medical therapy, the lameness progressed to minimal weight bearing and marked muscle atrophy of the right pelvic limb. Electromyography showed spontaneous activity in the muscles of right sciatic nerve distribution. Sensory and

Proteomics Using Draft Genomes: A Case Study in Spotted Hyena.

Crocuta crocuta, the spotted hyena, is unusual among the four remaining hyena species for its adaptation to hunting in preference to scavenging. Individual hyenas alternate between highly social life in matriarchal clans and solo hunting. Until 2020, the molecular biology of this species was hindered by the lack of genome data, but within three years, three draft genomes had been advanced for this species (2020-Yang, 2022-Shao, and 2023-DNA Zoo). This project generated both RNA-Seq (NCBI PRJNA658551) and proteomics data for animals from Kruger National Park in South Africa (ProteomeXchange PXD
