[Splenic hyalohyphomycosis. Case report].

Invasive aspergillosis is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in severely immunocompromised patients, especially those who are neutropenic or who have undergone bone marrow or solid-organ transplant. We report a case of hyalohyphomycosis morphologically suggestive of an Aspergillus spp. in a 22-year-old patient with aplastic anaemia, treated with multiple transfusions and broad spectrum antibiotics.

Molds: hyalohyphomycosis, phaeohyphomycosis, and zygomycosis.

Emerging fungi previously thought to be nonpathogenic are now recognized as playing a significant role in the increased incidence of invasive fungal disease. This change in the epidemiology of invasive fungal infections (IFIs) has occurred in the era of aggressive new therapies for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and other malignancies that lead to profound immunosuppression for longer durations and has extended the survival of these critically ill patients. The significant morbidity and mortality associated with these infections is not only related to the host populations but to delay

Opportunistic filamentous mycoses: aspergillosis, mucormycosis, phaeohyphomycosis and hyalohyphomycosis.

Opportunistic filamentous mycoses are widely distributed all over the world. They are rarely observed in Europe but are common in developing countries. The most common are the aspergilloses (due to Aspergillus spp.) mostly in neutropenia and immunosuppression; the mucormycoses characterized by rapid progression in patients with diabetic ketoacidosis; the phaeohyphomycoses due to pigmented fungi causing either a mild superficial or a very serious deep disease and the hyalohyphomycoses due to hyaline filamentous fungi (Fusarium spp., Pseudallescheria spp., Scopulariopsis spp.). Cutaneous manifes

Hyalohyphomycosis caused by Paecilomyces lilacinus after kidney transplantation.

Hyalohyphomycosis caused by Paecilomyces has rarely been described among solid organ recipients. Its management is elusive without an established consensus concerning antifungal therapy. Herein we have reported a case of extensive cellulitis caused by Paecilomyces lilacinus observed in a 48-year-old kidney transplanted woman with hepatitis C. Kidney transplantation from a cadaveric donor was performed in October 2006 with an uneventful early course except for posttransplant diabetes mellitus and a reversible acute rejection episode. Cutaneous nodular and verrucous lesions of the left leg appea

Subcutaneous hyalohyphomycosis caused by Acremonium recifei: case report.

We present a case of subcutaneous hyalohyphomycosis due to Acremonium recifei, a species whose habitat is probably the soil, first identified in 1934 by Arêa Leão and Lobo in a case of podal eumycetoma with white-yellowish grains and initially named Cephalosporium recifei. A white immunocompetent female patient from the state of Bahia, Brazil, with a history of traumatic injury to the right hand is reported. The lesions was painless, with edema, inflammation and the presence of fistulae. Seropurulent secretion with the absence of grains was present. Histopathological examination of material st

Fatal hyalohyphomycosis following Fusarium onychomycosis in an immunocompromised patient.

A 35-year-old man with B lymphoblastic lymphoma was treated with bone marrow transplant and aggressive chemotherapy. He developed a Fusarium infection of the great toenail. Septicemic dissemination of a Fusarium sp. occurred 9 months later during a lymphoma relapse. The clinical course of the hyalohyphomycosis was then rapidly fatal despite institution of amphotericin B therapy.

Ungual hyalohyphomycosis caused by Fusarium proliferatum in an immunocompetent patient.

The patient was a 73-year-old healthy female farmer who had been treated with terbinafine for 25.5 months by a primary physician. She exhibited a discoloration and thickening of the right big toenail. She had no concomitant paronychia. Direct microscopy revealed chlamydoconidia and hyphae, and periodic acid-Schiff stained nail specimen showed septate hyphae. On the basis of these morphological features and gene analysis, the final diagnosis was ungual hyalohyphomycosis caused by Fusarium proliferatum. Topical application of 10% efinaconazole solution cured the disease in 10 months.

Acremonium species: a review of the etiological agents of emerging hyalohyphomycosis.

Unusual fungal agents that exist environmentally as saprophytes can often lead to opportunistic infections. Hyalohyphomycosis is a group of fungal infections caused by fungi characterized by hyaline septate hyphae and can infect both immunocompetent as well as immunocompromised patients. Many a times it becomes difficult to distinguish a pathogenic and a contaminant fungus, because many such agents can assume clinical significance depending on circumstances. Subcutaneous and invasive fungal infection due to the emerging hyalohyphomycotic fungus, Acremonium, has drawn the attention of clinician

Cutaneous Hyalohyphomycosis and Its Atypical Clinical Presentations in Immunosuppressed Patients.

There has been a substantial increase in the number of cases of invasive fungal infections worldwide, which is associated with a growing number of immunosuppressed patients and a rise in antifungal resistance. Some fungi that were previously considered harmless to humans have become emerging pathogens. One of them is Purpureocillium lilacinum, a ubiquitous filamentous fungus commonly found in the environment, especially in the air and soil. P. lilacinum belongs to a bigger group of hyaline fungi that cause hyalohyphomycosis, a fungal infection caused by fungi with colorless hyphae. Although th

Cutaneous hyalohyphomycosis due to Parengyodontium album gen. et comb. nov.

"Engyodontium album" is an environmental saprobic mould and an emerging opportunistic pathogen able to cause both superficial and systemic infections. In this study, we isolated a mould from the skin lesion biopsy specimen of the right shin in a patient who received renal transplantation for end-stage renal failure with prednisolone, tacrolimus, and azathioprine immunosuppressant therapy. Histology of the skin biopsy showed mild squamous hyperplasia and neutrophilic infiltrate in the epidermis, active chronic inflammation in the dermis, and fat necrosis in the subcutis, with numerous fungal el

Experimental murine hyalohyphomycosis with soil-derived isolates of Fusarium solani.

Two strains of soil-borne Fusarium solani, both characterized for their ability to produce cyclosporin A and C, were examined for their pathogenicity in severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) and BALB/c male mice. Intravenous (i.v.) infections with F. solani conidia were performed. No mortality was observed after infection with 0.3-1.6 x 10(7) cfu per mouse in SCID and BALB/c mice. When mice were infected with 0.8-1.5 x 10(6) cfu per mouse and 2 days later with 1.2-1.9 x 10(6) cfu per mouse, 28.6-85.7% survival occurred over a 25-day period, depending on the F. solani strain and the inbred mo

An Unusual Association of Adult T-Cell Leukemia/Lymphoma With Hyalohyphomycosis.

Infection by human T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV-1) causes deregulation of the immune system, which makes the infected individuals more susceptible to infectious diseases. Immune deregulation is even more pronounced in HTLV-1 carriers with adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL), which results in frequent opportunistic infections. Hyalohyphomycosis is a rare subcutaneous mycosis which is more commonly associated with immunocompromised patients. We report a case of a HTLV-1-infected man with skin tumors, inguinal lymphadenomegaly, and lymphocytosis. Histopathological examination of skin biopsie

Hyalohyphomycosis and phaeohyphomycosis: two global disease entities of public health importance.

Two relatively new opportunistic diseases--hyalohyphomycosis and phaeohyphomycosis--are the byproduct, in most cases, of the progress being made in combating microbial and non-microbial diseases. Immunologically impaired hosts have become vulnerable to infection by fungi that were long considered to be innocuous. The currently known etiologic agents of these two diseases are listed and pertinent literature references are cited. The basic histologic differences between phaeohyphomycosis and chromoblastomycosis was emphasized and illustrated.

Cutaneous P. lilacinum Hyalohyphomycosis Infection: Atypical Histomorphology in an Immunocompetent Patient.

Hyalohyphomycosis is an opportunistic fungal infection caused by a variety of environmental, hyaline (i.e., non-pigmented) molds and is often associated with skin and/or systemic manifestations in immuncompromised individuals. Herein, we describe a case of a 73-year-old immunocompetent individual who recently immigrated from Cambodia with cutaneous hyalohyphomycosis caused by Purpureocillium lilacinum. The patient presented with pruritic, pink-to-violaceous, linear plaques and papules on the right dorsal forearm that had been present for 2-3 years. Biopsy showed superficial granulomatous derma

A hospital-based retrospective study of hospitalizations with hyalohyphomycosis and phaeohyphomycosis in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Hyalohyphomycosis and phaeohyphomycosis are mold infections associated with high mortality rates and diverse clinical presentations, but the epidemiology and outcomes are not well-understood in the United States. We examined hospitalizations associated with their causative fungi to inform potential public health and clinical interventions. METHODS: We identified hospitalizations with positive cultures for molds causing hyalohyphomycosis and phaeohyphomycosis using the 2019-2023 Premier Healthcare Database, selecting those in which the patient received at least one dose of a system

Pathology of hyalohyphomycosis caused by Scedosporium apiospermum (Pseudallescheria boydii): an emerging mycosis.

The genus Scedosporium contains two medically significant species of emerging mycotic agents, S. apiospermum and S. prolificans, which have received scant attention. Scedosporium apiospermum is the anamorph, or asexual state, of the cosmopolitan fungus Pseudallescheria boydii, with both sharing the same risk factors for infection, clinical spectrum, and histopathologic features. Scedosporium prolificans is a recently recognized agent of bone, soft tissue, and joint infections that occurs with highest frequency in children and young adults. S. prolificans may also cause potentially fatal dissem
