In the present study, genomic DNAs were purified from Korean isolates (KT8, KT6, KT-Kim and KT-Lee) and foreign strains (CDC85, IR78 and NYH 286) of Trichomonas vaginalis, and hybridized with a probe based on the repetitive sequence cloned from T. vaginalis to observe the genetic differences. By Southern hybridization, all isolates of T. vaginalis except the NYH286 strain had 11 bands. Therefore all isolates examined were distinguishable into 3 groups according to their banding patterns; i) KT8, KT6 and KT-Kim isolates had 11 identical bands such as 1 kb, 1.2 kb, 1.6 kb, 1.9 kb, 2.3 kb, 2.7 kb

Background: Schistosomiasis is a major poverty-related disease caused by dioecious parasitic flatworms of the genus Schistosoma with a health impact on both humans and animals. Hybrids of human urogenital schistosome and bovine intestinal schistosome have been reported in humans in several of Nigeria’s neighboring West African countries. No empirical studies have been carried out on the genomic diversity of Schistosoma haematobium in Nigeria. Here, we present novel data on the presence and prevalence of hybrids and the population genetic structure of S. haematobium. Methods: 165 Schistosoma-po

Hepatoblastoma is a malignant paediatric liver tumour. In order to approach the genetic background of this malignancy we have screened a panel of eighteen cases from Europe and Japan for chromosomal imbalances using comparative genomic hybridization (CGH). The most frequent losses included chromosomal regions 13q21-q22 (28%) and 9p22-pter (22%), while the most frequent gains occurred on 2q23-q24 (33%), 20q (28%) and 1q24-q25 (28%). A significant difference in CGH alterations between the tumours from patients of Caucasian and Japanese was revealed where loss of 13q was found only in the Japanes

BACKGROUND: The fragrance and aroma of Rosaceae plants are complex traits influenced by a multitude of factors, with genetic variation standing out as a key determinant which is largely impacted by polyploidy. Polyploidy serves as a crucial evolutionary mechanism in plants, significantly boosting genetic diversity and fostering speciation.
OBJECTIVE: This review focuses on the Rosaceae family, emphasizing how polyploidy influences the production of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are essential for the aromatic characteristics of economically important fruits like strawberries, apples

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of sperm fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) in preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) for male chromosomal disorders.
METHODS: From Jul. 2006 to Aug. 2008, FISH was performed in sperm and embryo of 9 infertile couples due to male chromosomal abnormality including 7 couples with Robertsonian translocation, one couple with reciprocal translocation and one couple with Klinefelter's syndrome. Correlation analysis was performed between sperm and embryo FISH results.
RESULTS: (1) FISH analysis of 8568 sperms showed 24 sperms had no fluorescence signals. T

There have been no reports on choromosomal aberrations of benign bone tumors revealed by comparative genomic hybridization (CGH). CGH analysis of benign tumors may be useful in understanding the mechanism of tumorigenesis with comparisons to malignant tumors. There were 4 tumors (2 enchondromas, one chondromyxoid fibroma, and one osteoid osteoma) and 8 tumor-like conditions (4 aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs), one eosinophilic granuloma, one fibrous dysplasia, one solitary bone cyst, and one Rosai-Dorfman disease) available for analysis. One of 2 enchondromas and one of 4 ABCs exhibited rapid grow

BACKGROUND: Germ Cell Tumors (GCTs) in children and adolescents constitute a clinically and histologically heterogeneous group of tumors. Compared to GCTs in adults, the numbers of GCTs in children analyzed with cytogenetic and molecular genetic techniques is limited. However, the data available to date reveal a pattern of cytogenetic aberrations different from that in adults. Comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) is a valuable technique for the genetic profiling of tumors that allows screening for chromosomal imbalances consistent with amplification of oncogenes and loss of putative tumor s

Quantum genetic algorithms (QGA) integrate genetic programming and quantum computing to address search and optimization problems. The standard strategy of the hybrid QGA approach is to add quantum resources to classical genetic algorithms (GA), thus improving their efficacy (i.e., quantum optimization of a classical algorithm). However, the extent of such improvements is still unclear. Conversely, Reduced Quantum Genetic Algorithm (RQGA) is a fully quantum algorithm that reduces the GA search for the best fitness in a population of potential solutions to running Grover's algorithm. Unfortunate

Integration of a conjugative plasmid into a bacterial chromosome can promote the transfer of chromosomal DNA to other bacteria. Intraspecies chromosomal conjugation is believed responsible for creating the global pathogens Klebsiella pneumoniae ST258 and Escherichia coli ST1193. Interspecies conjugation is also possible but little is known about the genetic architecture or fitness of such hybrids. To study this, we generated by conjugation 14 hybrids of E. coli and Salmonella enterica. These species belong to different genera, diverged from a common ancestor >100 Ma, and share a conserved orde

A total of 127 adult de novo acute myelocytic leukemia (AML) patients were analyzed by comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) at diagnosis. Conventional cytogenetic analysis (CCA) showed a normal karyotype in 45 cases and an abnormal karyotype in 56 cases; in the remaining cases, CCA either failed to yield sufficient metaphase cells (19/26) or was not done (7/26). Abnormal CGH profiles were identified in 39 patients (30.7%). DNA copy number losses (61%) were high compared to gains (39%), whereas partial chromosome changes (76%) were more common than whole chromosomes changes (24%). Recurrent

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) is a distinct clinicopathological entity, i.e., peripheral T-lymphocytic malignancy caused by human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-1) with diverse clinical features. High frequency of genetic instability (GIN) in both aggressive and indolent ATL was detected by comparative genomic hybridization (CGH). Among GIN, chromosomal instability, i.e., ancuploidy, in indolent ATL was as frequent but less complex and dynamic as compared to those in aggressive ATL. Some of the CGH alterations, including gain of 14q32, appear to be rather ATL specific. Clonal instabi

BACKGROUND: Determination of the genetic composition of papillary thyroid cancers may help explain differences in observed clinical behavior. Comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) is a novel molecular cytogenetic assay that allows simultaneous detection of gains, losses, and amplification of genetic information, making it an ideal screening tool. The aim of this study was to identify genetic aberrations occurring in papillary thyroid cancers by using CGH analysis.
METHODS: CGH analysis was performed on 21 individual cases of papillary thyroid cancers. Nonparametric statistical comparisons w

BACKGROUND: Thymoma is a heterogeneous group of tumors in biology and clinical behavior. Even though thymoma is divided into five subgroups following the World Health Organization classification, the nature of the disease is mixed within the subgroups.
RESULTS: We investigated the molecular characteristics of genetic changes variation of thymoma using cDNA microarray based-comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) with a 17 K cDNA microarray in an indirect, sex-matched design. Genomic DNA from the paraffin embedded 39 thymoma tissues (A 6, AB 11, B1 7, B2 7, B3 8) labeled with Cy-3 was co-hybri

Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg (H and RS) cells are generally considered to be the neoplastic cells of Hodgkin's disease (HD); however, such cells are found only in a minority of HD lesions. Very few data have so far been published on the cytogenetic abnormalities in HD. An analysis of unknown genetic aberrations has only recently become possible through the use of comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), which is based on the competitive binding of tumor and control DNA to metaphase chromosomes. In order to exclude the reaction of non-tumor cells, we used 100 sorted H-RS cells as the tumor DNA, t

The sequence relatedness of ten isolates of the Colorado tick fever (CTF) serogroup of orbiviruses was examined by RNA-RNA blot hybridization. The 12 dsRNA genome segments of each of the isolates were electrophoresed in a 10% polyacrylamide gel, the segments were transferred electrophoretically to membranes and hybridized to radiolabelled genomic RNA from CTF Florio mouse-adapted strain (CTF FMA) or CTF SS-18. All genome segments of the ten CTF viruses exhibited cross-hybridization signals with either CTF FMA or CTF SS-18, under conditions in which greater than or equal to 74% sequence homolog

CD10 is one of the hallmarks of germinal center B-cells where follicular lymphomas (FL) originate. It has not been clearly established, however, whether CD10(+) diffuse B-cell lymphomas (DLBCL) are genetically similar to FL. We therefore examined 19 CD10(+) DLBCL and 40 FL by means of comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) and tissue-fluorescence in situ hybridization (T-FISH). Chromosomal imbalance was more frequently detected in CD10(+) DLBCLs (19/19) than in FLs (24/40). Significant differences were found in eight frequently imbalanced regions, namely those with gains of chromosomes 7q and

Although a simple linear progression model for breast cancer has already been proposed, its validity still remains controversial. Especially, the genetic and molecular features of breast cancer at different stages during the development and progression, as well as their relationship, have rarely been studied under the same experimental conditions simultaneously. According to these limitations in this research area, the current study applied comparative genomic hybridization technique to investigate genomic changes in 15 cases of breast atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH), 15 cases of ductal carc
