Two new coumarin dimers, hydradavins A and B (1 and 2), along with a coumarin-phenylpropanoid adduct (3), were isolated from the 95% EtOH extract of roots and stems of Hydrangea davidii. Their structures were determined by comprehensive analyses of the spectroscopic data and physicochemical properties. Hydradavins A and B (1 and 2) are the first examples of coumarin dimers from the genus Hydrangea. In addition, compound 3 exhibited significant in vitro antimalarial activity with IC50 value of 1.7 ± 0.1 μM.

8 cases of allergic contact dermatitis from hydrangea seen in Angers, France, during the last 15 years are reported and compared to other cases found in the literature. In this review, allergic contact dermatitis from hydrangeas appears to be an occupational dermatosis among nursery workers, presenting as an eczema involving the hands and especially the first 3 fingers, with chronic features of fissuring and scaling and with a chronic course. Differential diagnosis from irritant contact dermatitis may be difficult. Patch tests with the stem as well as the leaf of hydrangeas gave strong positiv

The ornamental crop species Hydrangea macrophylla exhibits diploid and triploid levels of ploidy and develops lacecap (wild type) or mophead inflorescences. In order to characterize a H. macrophylla germplasm collection, we determined the inflorescence type and the 2C DNA content of 120 plants representing 43 cultivars. We identified 78 putative diploid and 39 putative triploid plants by flow cytometry. In our collection 69 out of 98 flowering plants produced lacecap inflorescences, whereas 29 plants developed mophead inflorescences. Surprisingly, 12 cultivars included diploid as well as tripl

Anthocyanins are key flavonoid metabolites determining floral pigmentation, and their biosynthesis is tightly regulated through coordinated transcriptional and metabolic processes. Although R2R3-MYB transcription factors are well recognized as central regulators of anthocyanin biosynthesis, the roles of WER-like MYB members in anthocyanin metabolism remain largely unknown. In this study, we identified and functionally characterized HmWER-like, a WER/MYB114-like R2R3-MYB transcription factor from Hydrangea macrophylla, and investigated its role in anthocyanin metabolism and floral pigmentation.

A total of 164 APETALA2/ethylene-responsive factor (AP2/ERF) genes were identified in Hydrangea macrophylla, and HmaERF87 positively contributes to leaf spot resistance. The APETALA2/ethylene-responsive factor (AP2/ERF) transcription factor family plays important roles in plant stress responses, but its contribution to disease resistance in Hydrangea macrophylla (hydrangea) remains poorly understood. In this study, 164 AP2/ERF genes were identified in the H. macrophylla genome and classified into APETALA2 (AP2), ethylene-responsive factor (ERF), dehydration-responsive element-binding (DREB), a

Hydrangea, which has large and vivid flowers, is a crucial ornamental plant that is used in landscape design. However, its limited tolerance to cold restricts its widespread application in regions with low temperatures. To investigate the effects of low-temperature stress on hydrangea, four common cultivars were examined. By comparing leaf anatomical structures and physiological parameters including soluble substances levels, antioxidant enzyme activities, and cold resistance-related gene expression levels under different low-temperature conditions (4°C, 0°C, -4°C, -8°C, and -12°C), cold resis

Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens var. "Annabelle") flowers are composed of sweet aroma sepals rather than true petals and can change color. Floral volatiles plays important roles in plants, such as attracting pollinators, defending against herbivores, and signaling. However, the biosynthesis and regulatory mechanisms underlying fragrance formation in H. arborescens during flower development remain unknown. In this study, a combination of metabolite profiling and RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) was employed to identify genes associated with floral scent biosynthesis mechanisms in "Annabelle" flowers a

Ornamental hydrangeas (genus Hydrangea) are cultivated worldwide for their diverse flower colors and attractive morphology. Here, we assembled the complete plastid genome (plastome) and 45S nuclear ribosomal DNA (45S nrDNA) sequences of 22 individuals representing H. serrata, H. macrophylla, and related species (H. arborescens, H. paniculata, H. petiolaris, and H. hydrangeoides). The plastomes contained up to 2,344 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and 367 insertions/deletions (InDels) within the genus, whereas the assembled 45S nrDNA sequences showed 119 SNPs and 10 InDels. Phylogenetic

Hydrangea ringspot virus (HdRSV) is an emerging plant virus infecting ornamental hydrangea species worldwide, yet its genomic diversity and host associations remain poorly understood. To expand the available genomic resources and assess HdRSV variability, we screened 210 publicly available Hydrangea spp. transcriptomes from diverse tissues, complemented with four newly generated H. macrophylla transcriptomes from Colombia. Viral genomes were assembled from infected samples and analyzed to infer phylogenetic relationships, lineage distribution, and relative viral RNA abundance. Two well-support

Carbon superstructures with exquisite morphologies and functionalities show appealing prospects in energy realms, but the systematic tailoring of their microstructures remains a perplexing topic. Here, hydrangea-shaped heterodiatomic carbon superstructures (CHS) are designed using a solution phase manufacturing route, wherein machine learning workflow is applied to screen precursor-matched solvent for optimizing solvent-precursor interaction. Based on the established solubility parameter model and molecular growth kinetics simulation, ethanol as the optimal solvent stimulates thermodynamic sol

Cytokinins and abscisic acid act as auxin antagonists during adventitious root induction, thereby limiting AR development depending on plant genotype and the distance to the wounding site. This study investigated the role of plant hormones in the lower rooting capacity of cuttings of the Hydrangea macrophylla cultivar 'Clarissa' compared to 'Caipirinha', further considering interrelations to carbohydrates. At first, the rooting response to 1 min pulse treatments of the stem base with indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) was analyzed. Without IAA, rooting of 'Clarissa' lagged behind that of 'Caipirinha'.

BACKGROUND: The ornamental crop Hydrangea macrophylla develops highly attractive lacecap (wild type) or mophead inflorescences. The mophead trait, which is mostly favored by consumers, is recessively inherited by the INFLORESCENCE TYPE locus (INF). If lacecap cultivars are crossed with mophead cultivars, then either 50% or all progenies develop lacecap inflorescences, depending on the zygosity at the INF locus. For most cultivars, the zygosity at the INF locus is unknown. Furthermore, the determination of the inflorescence type in offspring populations is time-consuming, because seedlings flow

We confirmed that the hexane layer of Hydrangea macrophylla leaf extract (HLH) is rich in phyllodulcin (PD), an alternative sweetener, through high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. To investigate in vivo activity of HLH and its PD, acute toxicity and growth rate of Caenorhabditis elegans were tested and there are no clinical abnormalities at 125-500 µg/mL of HLH. HLH decreased the total lipid and triglyceride contents dose-dependently in glucose-induced obese worms. Also, HLH increased survival rates under oxidative and thermal stress and decreased body reactive oxygen specie

In this study, we aimed to elucidate the defense mechanism of Alcea rosea (Linn.) Cavan. and Hydrangea macrophylla (Thunb.) Ser. against the single and compound toxicity of lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) along with the synergistic effect of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) in accumulation of metals in these two species. The two plant species were subjected to single metal treatment (Pb 1000 mg kg-1, Zn 600 mg kg-1) and compound metal treatment (Pb 1000 mg kg-1 + Zn 600 mg kg-1) in a greenhouse. Besides, different levels of EDTA were applied (2.5, 5.0, and 10.0 mmol kg-1) with compound metal tre
