Poly(ethylene Glycol) Methyl Ether Methacrylate-Based Injectable Hydrogels: Swelling, Rheological, and In Vitro Biocompatibility Properties with ATDC5 Chondrogenic Lineage.

Here, we present the synthesis of a series of chemical homopolymeric and copolymeric injectable hydrogels based on polyethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMEM) alone or with 2-dimethylamino ethyl methacrylate (DMAEM). The objective of this study was to investigate how the modification of hydrogel components influences the swelling, rheological attributes, and in vitro biocompatibility of the hydrogels. The hydrogels' networks were formed via free radical polymerization, as assured by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR). The swelling of the hydrogels directly correlate

Elastin-Based Hydrogel for Selective Adsorption of Rare Earth Elements.

The sustainable separation of rare earth elements (REEs) from complex mixtures remains a critical technological challenge. Biomaterials offer a promising route, but their deployment has been hindered by their limited stability and efficiency. Here, we report a robust elastin-based hydrogel incorporating the lanthanide-binding protein, lanmodulin, for efficient and selective REE separation. A fusion protein of elastin-like polypeptide and lanmodulin was synthesized and cross-linked with four-arm polyethylene glycol to form a porous network that enhances REE binding and release in aqueous enviro

Crystallization-Induced Network Growth for Enhancing Hydrogel Mechanical Properties.

Inspired by the actin-myosin-mediated growth mechanisms in skeletal muscle, cyclic crystallization is employed to induce hydrogel self-growth. Using polyacrylamide-sodium acetate (PAM-NaAc) hydrogel as a model system, the crystallization of NaAc triggers the stretching and subsequent fracture of polymer chains, generating mechanoradicals at strain-concentrated regions. These reactive species facilitate the incorporation of polymerizable compounds (monomers and crosslinkers). Specifically, localized polymerization of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) monomers occurs at fracture sites, le

In situ assessment of cellular hydrogel swelling behaviors via microbubble‑induced ultrasonic resonance scattering.

Hydrogels exhibit stimuli-responsive swelling behaviors that are beneficial for biomedical applications including disease diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring. However, the current prevailing methods of assessing the swelling behaviors are inherently ex situ, requiring the removal of hydrogels from their operating environment. This has hindered the use of hydrogels in continuous physiological monitoring contexts. Achieving reliable and in situ assessment of hydrogel swelling is essential yet remains a challenge. Here, we present a new monitoring strategy that exploits resonance scattering of u

BODIPY Photocage-Based Injectable Hydrogel for Light-Controlled Nanoparticle Release.

Light-controlled release of therapeutics holds great promise for improving patient compliance with treatment plans against many leading diseases and could contribute to a better quality of life for people suffering from chronic conditions. However, insufficient tissue penetration of light largely limits the in vivo applications of photoresponsive therapeutics. With the aim to circumvent this limitation and to work within tissue depths that are pragmatically accessible to light, we developed an injectable and photodegradable hydrogel that could enable controlled drug delivery in subcutaneous ti

Differential adherence of Acanthamoeba to contact lenses: effects of material characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Acanthamoeba-associated keratitis occurs most often in contact lens wearers. The contact lens material may affect its ability to act as a mechanical vector, permitting transfer of viable amoebae from the storage case to the corneal surface. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of ionicity and water content on the comparative quantitative adherence of Acanthamoeba trophozoites and cysts to new, unworn hydrogel contact lenses and rigid gas-permeable contact lens materials. METHODS: Sixteen quarter segments of each of 8 types of unworn hydrogel lenses representati

Fabrication of Indole-3-propionic acid loaded hydrogels for spinal cord injury repair.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating neurological condition with an exceptionally high disability rate. The clinical management of SCI remains suboptimal primarily owing to both the inhibitory characteristics of the post-injury microenvironment and inherently limited regenerative ability. In this study, we report an indole-3-propionic acid (IPA) loaded polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate (PEGDA)/lysine hydrogel for repairing spinal cord injury. Compressive Young's moduli of hydrogels can be precisely tuned by adjusting the compositional ratios. The IPA loaded hydrogels exhibits not only ex

Synthesis of Cell-Adhesive Anisotropic Multifunctional Particles by Stop Flow Lithography and Streptavidin-Biotin Interactions.

Cell-adhesive particles are of significant interest in biotechnology, the bioengineering of complex tissues, and biomedical research. Their applications range from platforms to increase the efficiency of anchorage-dependent cell culture to building blocks to loading cells in heterogeneous structures to clonal-population growth monitoring to cell sorting. Although useful, currently available cell-adhesive particles can accommodate only homogeneous cell culture. Here, we report the design of anisotropic hydrogel microparticles with tunable cell-adhesive regions as first step toward micropatterne

Bioactive Glass Empowered Mineralizable Hydrogel for Effective Dentinal Tubule Occlusion.

Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) arises from exposure of dentinal tubules, and tubular occlusion is regarded as the most effective therapy. Bioactive glasses (BGs) that can produce hydroxyapatite (HAp) minerals through reacting with saliva provide a potential opportunity for sustainable tubular occlusion. Although effective, the promotion of BGs in DH treatment has been long suffering from their poor maneuverability in practice. Here we employ a pH neutral BGs composed of a ternary Ca-P-Si system, denoted as PSC, and integrate it into a polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel to construct a composite system th

Enhancing Binding by Electron Transfer at Heterointerfaces of Biochar-Modified Hydrogel to Improve Utilization Efficiency of Wastewater Recovered Nutrients.

Here, this work combines membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) technology with biochar-modified hydrogel production to recycle nutrients from wastewater efficiently. MCDI selectively recovered 76.89 ± 5.12% of ammonia and 78.94 ± 3.84% of phosphate from municipal wastewater. The biochar formed layered linear arrays within the hydrogel matrix, and enhanced hydrogen bonding led to the formation of a nanoscale hydrogel coating, creating the distinct heterointerfaces. Interestingly, biochar mediated the enhanced nutrient binding to hydrogel through electron transfer at heterointerfaces, thereby

Confined in-situ photopolymerization of an ultra-thin zwitterionic hydrogel skin on polysulfone membrane assisted by PEI for robust and enhanced emulsion separation.

Hydrogel-coated membranes resist fouling in oil-water emulsion separation through surface hydrophilicity, yet suffer from high initial flux loss and poor long-term stability caused by thick coatings and weak non-covalent adhesion. A novel "hydrophobic initiator-pre-embedded and confined surface-initiated" (HIPECI) photopolymerization strategy is reported for grafting an ultrathin zwitterionic hydrogel skin onto a polyethylenimine (PEI)-modified polysulfone (PSF) membrane. UV activation of a pre-embedded benzophenone initiator generates surface-tethered radicals for concurrent polymerization an

A bio-conjugated 2D photonic crystal hydrogel-based immunoassay for glycocholic acid.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, underscoring an urgent need for reliable point-of-care testing (POCT) tools. Glycocholic acid (GCA), owing to its high specificity and sensitivity, has been recognised as a promising biomarker for HCC. Nevertheless, current GCA detection methodologies still suffer from drawbacks, including high cost, cumbersome procedures, prolonged assay times, and single-use formats. In this study, a novel label-free immunoassay based on a two-dimensional photonic crystal hydrogel (2D-PCH) has been reported, which e

Orbital and Sinonasal Complications of Hydrogel Scleral Buckle: A Case Report.

The hydrogel scleral buckle is a hydrophilic implant that is characterized by progressive expansion and can present with secondary orbital changes. The authors present a unique case of hydrogel-induced erosion of the orbital roof into the frontal sinus, with formation of a sino-orbital communication that resulted in frontal sinusitis and adjacent cerebritis. The hydrogel material is radiologically characterized as a fluid-filled hypertense T2 mass with rim enhancement and peripheral calcification. Awareness of late orbital complications from the hydrogel material is important to distinguish th
